25th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ackers Pit regular Andy Hobson just can’t get enough of the place despite the crystal clear water conditions making it difficult to catch at present. He tried his luck on Saturday last and sat for hours with a motionless float when he decided in desperation on a move to a different peg. Bingo, he had five carp in an hour fishing a small waggler and double red maggot. A return visit to the same peg two days later, identical method and a half pint of red maggots, and he had sixteen carp between 3.5 and 6lbs but not a single silver fish.

Neil Plunkett decided to give Rixton Claypits a visit on Tuesday and despite having to go through an assault course to get to his peg by first removing a fallen tree and other broken branches spread along a very boggy path, the latter understandable after the wettest year since records began, he  deservedly had a very productive morning. Using a method feeder packed with micro-pellets and double corn on the hook he ended his session in time for lunch having caught twelve bream between 2 and 5lbs plus a tench of about 3.5lbs. What a great start to our early spring.

The first round of the Cheshire Spring League was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Brookfield Bridge and was a feast or famine affair with section one boasting a top weight of 8.5ozs taken by George Barber (two roach and a single perch) and he was one of the lucky ones as half his section failed to catch. Section two was worlds apart with winner Bob Campbell on peg 880 bagging up with an all roach save for three small skimmers catch taken on bread punch. He did have the double advantage of an end peg draw plus a surprise vacant next peg and boy did he made it count when he put 16-4-4 on the scales. Runner-up was Phil Cross on peg 876 with an all roach net of 10-0-4.A long way to go but after the first round Bob Campbell leads the league and he is in great form continuing this success with a win the Nantwich Winter League the following day.

Our Sunday Mersey match saw Albert Morris double  up on last week’s two bites and two of them just happened to be a couple of decent bream giving him 7-3-8 and interupting Roy Everson’s run of wins, mind you Roy still came through in second place with 5-0-12.  Roy and Ray Bowden are still on seven wins apiece with just two matches remaining before the season end. There has been rumours about someone running a book but I think it’s far too close to call as they are both top drawer match anglers.

Respectable weights again in our Disabled & Over 60’s match fished near Walton Gardens.  Alan Brown moved up a place from his last week’s result to end up a pound clear of the rest of the field with 5-13-0 of roach and tiny skimmers. Graham Belton was runner-up with 4-13-4. After a long absence WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks showed that he hadn’t lost his touch when he came in at joint fourth. All angers caught well with most fish being taken on bread, pinkies, or casters.

18th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Despite Sunday being a sunny spring day all was not well on our regular Mersey Series match (aka Mersey wrist cutter) as those fishing had to contend with highly coloured water and rafts of debris coming down with extra flow seemingly diverted from the Manchester Ship Canal. Last week’s winner Roy Everson now nicknamed ‘the cobra’ (one bite and it’s all over) did just that with a single 6oz roach followed by Albert Morris who had two bites that produced as many tiny roach for 2oz. Roy now has 7 wins under his belt equalling Ray Bowden with just three matches remaining before the coarse fish close season.

Thankfully no raffle tickets were needed as the Bridgewater Canal produced better sport for our popular Disabled & Over 60’s match fished on Monday in the Dead Length at Walton.  Lenny Dutton notched up his second win of 2014 with a roach and skimmer catch for 5-15-0 taken on bread punch and caster. Alan Brown took the runner-up spot with 3-9-4.

Eric Smith and his grandson Callum Postill 12years are enjoying good sport with the Pike at Greymist Mere. Since joining fourteen days ago they have fished it four times and Callum has had at least one Pike on each visit. On Sunday he was float fishing dead-baits and had a couple of five pounders and a fish around the seven and a half pound mark and lost three others.  A few tench are being caught and Morgan Adawee landed a mirror that was stocked three months ago at 14-4-0 but had lost 4ozs.

Ralph Bennett took my advice on where he should be able to catch a fish or two and headed for Rixton Claypits where despite trying every method known to man he sat biteless for three hours. My name was mud, but not being a quitter Ralph changed over to double caster regularly feeding a few around his float, suddenly at 4pm the float slid away and he struck into what he thought was a smallish tench or big roach but 10minutes later he slid his net under a superb tinca of 6-2-0. Although not really interested in PB’s it did beat his previous by over 2lbs and to quote him, “It was the only bite of the day but I went home very happy.”

11th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our regular Mersey Series match was back on again following its cancellation the previous week due to atrocious weather and high tides. It was fishable on Sunday but still carrying a lot of extra water which coupled with windy conditions sorted the men out from the boys. Winner Roy Everson wearing his brand spanking new Drennan waterproofs christened them in good style with 4-13-9. He didn’t have a fish in the net but with 15 minutes to go and out of the blue came a welcome almost 4lbs bream making it game, set, match. He was tempted to kiss it but was stopped by a fat lady behind him singing! Runner-up was match organiser Ant Higham on the next peg who thought that he had it in the bag with his five roach and a skimmer bream for 1-8-0.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Red Lane Bridge and turned out to be probably the worst result on record. Match organiser John Dagnall put it down to a severe overnight frost which apparently suited his style of fishing as he clocked up his first win of the year with 13-4. Bob Wallwork back on the match scene following a long absence was in runner-up spot with 8-0.

In one section only two anglers actually caught but Lenny Dutton with 2-12 suffered his lowest ever result where he actually drew coin, just edging out Graham Belton on 2-4. I know a few weeks ago I wrote that it can’t get any worse, well surely weights cannot go any lower otherwise anglers will be issued with raffle tickets at the draw.

Martin Griffiths who organises our Members Flyer matches every Saturday battled it out with Stu Hardman fish for fish on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm. It was a close run thing but Martin ended up with 7-10-5 pushing Stu’s 7-3-0 into second place. Pole and bread punch plus a few caster fish was the winning method that consisted of roach except for a solitary skimmer.

Members regularly email or ring me asking where the current best venue where they may catch a few fish? You cannot go far wrong than watch the match results, for example this week avoid Red Lane at all costs but get down to Lymm for some silver fish action. It’s a no brainer.

We are looking for witnesses to hopefully catch the person who fly-tipped rubbish at Grey Mist Mere on Tuesday. Please ring or email me with any information.

4th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Eric Smith and his 12 year old grandson Callum Postill chose Grey Mist Mere as a venue for their first visit to a Warrington Anglers Association fishery. They were impressed with this Association owned water that many take for granted, and the fishing on the day wasn’t too bad either. Callum had 4 runs missed 2, hooked 2, and lost a near double figure fish at the net. He ended his session with his first ever pike, a fish of 5lbs and just maybe thoughts of what could have been, but nevertheless a catch that he will never forget. To quote Eric, “We are new members and this day alone has made it worthwhile joining”.

Mike (Spike) Bamber reports catching a 23lbs plus distinctive mirror from this fishery on Sunday which was only stocked three years ago at 14lbs. Not too bad a growth rate, a gain of just over 3lbs per year. Currently fish are already ordered two years in advance but this is information that more members should be sharing as it can have a bearing of future stocking requirements.
Just a couple of lines to quell rumours, the latest that we have given up the Mount …… one word, NO. Also that Coppull Anglers are no longer one of our licence depots …… again total bilge. In fact Mike and Ellen are excellent ambassadors of our club.

Our regular Mersey Series match was cancelled last Sunday due to high tides but that did not stop match co-organiser Paul Harding from having a chuck for a couple of hours before the impending inundation. Fishing his usual feeder tactics he ended up with twenty roach and a skimmer.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match was fished on the Dead Length pegged from the Walton Bridge end towards Houghs Bridge. Veteran angler George Barber who is rarely out of the money elevated himself from his previous week’s second place with a roach and skimmer catch of 6-1-12 taken on bread punch. In the news again but this time in the main prizes is match organiser John Dagnall in second place with an all skimmer net for 4-11-0.

Our Members Flyer fished on Saturday at Lymm again saw cracking weights with National Squad Manager Jeff Stoll leaving the opposition in his wake with an all roach catch of 13-15-11 taken on pole and red maggot. Ste Hirst maintained his runner-up position of the previous week with 10-5-14.
