13th March 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th March 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our last match of the coarse fish season was held on the River Mersey on Sunday and Jimmy Gannon finished the season in style following up his win last week with an impressive 16-8-0 of bream and roach taken on a maggot feeder. He lost a large fish that he had played from across the river when his line became entangled with a boat. The weights then plummeted and Lee Clarke needed only 2-7-0 for runner-up spot.

As regards the coarse fish close season on rivers I think it is high time that the Environment Agency got its act together and canvassed every angler who purchases a mandatory licence to fish. It would cost hardly anything and the matter could then be concluded fairly by a democratic majority vote and its current closure not remain reliant on an unrepresentative survey that was so secretive nobody was aware it had happened. There is no close season on the majority of stillwaters, lakes, and canals, and also no known scientific reason for it to be retained on rivers.

Gary Hughes had a session on High Legh Pools and had six mirror carp from 1.5lbs to 4lbs plus a few small roach. The good news no evidence of cormorants or damaged fish.

Ackers Pit was the choice venue for Ian Heesom where in a four hours session he had a couple of 4lbs plus mirror carp, three quality crucians, and plenty of good sized roach. Fishing waggler he took the carp on pellet and the roach alternating maggot and pellet. And everyone was telling me all the roach had vanished.

Laurence Pearson was hoping for a few tench on Rixton Claypits but in their absence wasn't too disappointed with nineteen skimmers up to 2lbs. All were caught on the tip and red maggot.

Well done to both our teams who got through to the next round of the Angling Times Supercup competition this past weekend. Geoff Stoll's team was drawn away and Warrington Black was drawn home against Lymm. Geoff's ended up with both teams on equal points and just secured the win on a count back on weight. Warrington Black had 14points against Lymm's 10. The dread is now that both teams could actually draw against each other.

I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
