11th October 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Following their successful trip exactly a month ago to our stretch of the River Wye Richard Pierce and his three pals made the trek again last weekend. Initially they faced a rising river carrying weed and debris that certainly had an adverse effect on sport with only eight barbel between them on the first session. Undeterred the next day they had twenty chub to just over 5lbs taken mainly on halibut pellet, but the icing on the cake for Richard was a PB pike of 19-9-0 taken on dead bait. The fish had what looked to be a bite mark from another pike in front of its dorsal fin so who knows what leviathan lurks in the river.
The River Dee is a good all round river where you can fish for whatever species, coarse or game, that floats your boat. Our bailiff Mike Lewis reports that our stretch at Almere Ferry has this past week produced barbel to 9-2-0, a trio of perch to one member of 2-2-0, 2-4-0, topped by a fish of 2.5lbs. Grayling are now starting to shoal and are giving good sport with a fish of 2-2-0 being taken by Karl Nicholls.
On the game scene as we approach the last weekend of the Dee salmon season (ends 17th October) there have been good numbers of fish caught mainly averaging around 7lbs but one of 20lbs was taken on our Worthenbury stretch on Saturday. On the downside I have heard of one angler killing three fish in a single session! Not only that but some are clearly flouting the current byelaw of fly and spin only and fishing worm. Some decent sea-trout are showing with fish to over 3lbs caught by members.
Large bream again dominated the results in our Sunday match on the Mersey with Roy Everson having only four bites but converted them all and weighed in four fish for a winning net of 21lbs. Second placed match organiser Bob Campbell is on a roll after winning a good chunk of coin in Ireland last week, however on this occasion one bream of 7-8-0 plus a few bits for a total of 8-0-0 was enough to put him in the money.
Our regular Monday disabled & over 60's match scheduled for the Bridgewater Canal at Moore had to be hurriedly moved to the 'Dead Length' at the last minute when members turned up to find MSC staff carrying out some major tree removal works. Under the circumstances it proved to be a blessing in disguise with the majority of anglers breaking the 2.5lbs barrier in the prevailing windy and rainy conditions. Winner, Bud Leigh put a nice mixed net of fish on the scales for 4-7-7 just over 4ozs ahead of runner up Jimmy Byrne.
