17th March, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Gary Mannion had a good session on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane last week when he pole fished chopped worm and caster for an impressive net of roach and bream estimated at 40lbs. This report comes only days after a member complained that he had fished the same pegs without a single bite; well that's fishing for you. Gary set his stall out for the big perch that seem to favour this area but his first fish was a roach over a pound and it was hectic sport thereafter with only a couple of perch in the catch.

News from one of our under fished waters, namely the tiny River Bollin of good catches of quality roach being taken on stick float and small red worm. This overgrown and wild small river is more than capable of a few surprises.

The Dane by contrast was out of sorts last weekend with only a few chub and small grayling being caught. Our bailiff Ron Williams reports that member Dave Davies had the best fish, a chub of exactly 4lbs.

The Last river match of the season on the Mersey was a poor affair with weights well down despite the near perfect conditions. Barry Chambers only needed 3-5-0 to take the winnings with Mersey veteran Paul Harding putting 1-15-0 on the scales for second place.

The Macclesfield Canal at Congleton was consistent with Mike Chung taking a well deserved win with an all roach catch of 7-13-15 taken on bread and caster. Second placed Stu Hardman redeemed himself after his disaster of last week on the same venue when he was battered from both sides by, one of whom won the match. Stu was so despondent this past week that he even considered putting his tackle on EBay. For the record you needed at least 5lbs for a section win.

Nineteen anglers turned out for the disabled & over 60's match which saw Ron Durr win with just over 4lbs of roach and skimmers. The turnout is steadily increasing and with the good craic amongst the regulars this is becoming a popular event.

Sometime in the next week to ten days we will be stocking our Wigan waters, Fosters Pools, Johnsons Pool, Woodshaw Reservoir, and of course Ackers Pit. Species include rudd, roach, cruciens, small carp, and chub; although all waters will not be getting this mix.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 Fax 01928 713898 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street will be open on Friday evening as usual between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.
