24th April 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th April, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Stuart Hutcheson was pleased that like every member he took the time to read his licence only to find that he had won last year's Stocking Fund Draw, a very welcome two hundred quid. All he has to do now is convince his wife that it may only be spent on fishing tackle.

Last weekend our volunteers were out on a netting job at a fishery in Wales with the fish being designated for our Offa's Dyke Fisheries. They collected 421lbs of mixed skimmers, rudd, but mainly roach plus a handful reasonable sized bream. The fish added to existing stocks that include bream, tench, and carp should provide some decent sport in the pools which are set in picturesque surroundings. Reports please.

Please note that the farmer has put his lock on the gate at C & D Pools (Fosters Pools) Wigan as he now has cattle in the field which means there is no access onto our carpark for the time being. However, I understand that Malpin which is just down the road from C & D produced some half decent roach, rudd, perch, plus a bonus chub on for Chris Connel. He had twenty-five fish in all taken on float-fished maggot.

Tim Long enjoyed a good session on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green when he caught thirty-four roach with the majority of a 6 to 8oz stamp and three around 1.5lbs mark. Tim reckons it was easy fishing, nothing technical, just pole and loose-fed maggot down the track. He rounded off his late afternoon session with a well-earned pint at the nearby Rising Sun. Members definitely miss out on potentially good sport by ignoring this canal fishery.

This week our Monday at our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick and for a change saw some better weights with the lowest around 2lbs. The good news is that there were plenty of small fish and after an absence in most parts of the canal good numbers of gudgeon were showing up in catches. Lennie Dutton aka End Peg was an easy winner with 5-3-14 followed in second place with 3-11-4 by Graham Belton (Magnum). Pole fished pinky or bread punch was the general method.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.

17th April 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Des Boyd took some time off from his WAA bailiffs duties to fit in a short session on Rixton Claypits last week. Now Des is 'old school' as he was fishing one of my favourite methods, a groundbait feeder and maggot, but not using the now conventional quiver tip. He opted for an even more delicate bite indication that most of you if you even have one may need to rummage through your older items of tackle to find it! Yes, the item was a swing tip which offers very little resistance to a biting fish. The result was half a dozen bream all around 3.5 to 4lbs and he lost a few off the hook.

Alan Biesty and his friends had a tough day at Grey Mist Mere last weekend that started at 7am in heavy rain. Despite trying every trick in the book and a variety of baits to tempt a tench, there was nothing doing. In a last-ditch effort Alan dropped his red maggot offering with one silicone red maggot over the eye of the hook as an aligner close in under tree branches and immediately hooked into a carp and despite playing it for some time it slipped the hook. It was 5pm and getting towards the last chance saloon time so he cast out to an earlier swim where he had been feeding and stitched a ring of maggots into a ring mixed with 3 silicone floaters. Result a cracking 6lbs tench. Alan summed up the day, and I quote, "We all had a nice day together on the Mist, and it doesn't really matter if you don't catch as long as you enjoy your time together with good friends." For the record a few more tench have been showing these past few days, possibly with the better weather.

Generally, around our waters if you want some roach action it is Appleton Reservoir; smaller silvers, crucians, and small carp try Woodshaw Reservoir; and for a real variety it has got to be Statham Pool, although it is a bit muddy at present. I believe a few quality carp have been coming out of  Sandiway Lakes, but getting further info is like platting fog..

This week our Monday at our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury Labs. WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks clocked up his first win of the year with a weight of 3-10-6 taken on the pole at 11metres. His net of small roach and skimmers. Second placed angler Jimmy Byrne weighed in 3-3-6 from the peg next door.

Don't forget tomorrow, Wednesday the 18th April 2018 at Croft Memorial Hall, 5, Mustard Lane Croft, Warrington WA3 7BQ. It is free to attend. Tea & coffee served from 6-40pm and meeting begins at 7pm. This is your chance to make your voice heard on the River Close Season & Cormorant Predation.

Phillip Brown reports that the tench are starting feed on Grey Mist where last week he caught five of the olive beauties all around the 6lb mark. Phil fished a block-end feeder about 30 yds out with a bunch of maggots on the hook. I am also informed that a few carp are being caught but disturbingly have received a report that an angler sacked a fish last week. All carp and tench must be returned to the water immediately and not retained overnight for a catch shot.

Jamie Bretherton visited Rixton Claypits for the first time and came away after four hours suitably impressed. He fished a small method feeder and alternated between double maggot and corn to end his session with eight bream around 3lbs and six tench which he reckons were mainly averaging 3lbs with one approaching 5lbs. A return visit is definitely on the cards.

A notice has been posted that one of our depots, Lionel's Tackle at Buckley is closing so with immediate effect members can no longer join or pay their annual subscription there. The nearest Warrington Anglers Association depot to Buckley is Chester Tackle Locker which is open every day except Sunday. Telephone 01244 345069.

This week our Monday at our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road and although catches were not going to set the world alight it was won by committee member Graham Belton (Magnum). He put 2-14-8 of small roach on the scales caught on pinkie and small pole-cups of groundbait at 11 metres. Graham edged Jimmy Byrne into second place by a mere 8 drams or in other words half an ounce. Sixteen fished.

No apologies for repeating this important invite for the third week …. if any member is interested in having their say on the Coarse Fish Close Season on Rivers, cormorants, or any other priorities then you should attend the Angling Trust North West Fisheries Forum where they are asking for angler's ideas and opinions. It is on Wednesday the 18th April 2018 at Croft Memorial Hall, 5, Mustard Lane Croft, Warrington WA3 7BQ. It is free to attend. Tea & coffee served from 6-40pm and meeting begins at 7pm. This is your chance to make your voice heard.

3rd April, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Regular column contributor Neil Plunkett having sat watching silent bite alarms for 7 hours on Grey Mist earlier in the week he decided on Saturday to try Woodshaw Reservoir. There was a bitter east wind so Neil set up with comfort in mind with it on his back, but 90 minutes later and no bites he decided to try another swim facing into the teeth of the wind. What a change of fortunes for after the first couple of fish he soon forgot about the cold. Neil's final tally was fourteen crucians all over 2lbs, a perch 2lbs plus, and about a dozen roach. All fish came to a groundbait feeder and single maggot on size 20's hook. As usual the local bailiffs were friendly and helpful making it all in all a great day.

One of our Members, Harold Yates passed away on the 24th March just one month short of his ninetieth birthday. His funeral is on 17th April 2018, 10-30am Warrington Parish Church, and then to Walton Lea Crematorium for 11am. If any members who knew Harold wish to attend afterwards for a drink etc. please get in touch with me either by email or on the number below in order to gauge numbers.

This week our Monday at our Disabled & Over 60's match on Woodshaw Reservoir was fished in snow and freezing cold conditions. Winner John Mills put 3-14-0 on the scales made up of a bream, a crucian, and a few small roach. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 3-4-0.

The local fishery management team are planning to hold a work party on The Mount at Buckley, next Sunday 8th April. They meet on the car park at around 9:00 am, and finish around midday. Work varies from very light e.g. trimming back willow "whips" to serious tree removal! So, something for everyone of all ages and abilities. Ask for Derek Cowell.

And in case you missed it…. if any member is interested in having their say on the Coarse Fish Close Season on Rivers, predation, or any other priorities then you should attend the Angling Trust North West Fisheries Forum where they are asking for angler's ideas and opinions. It is on Wednesday the 18th April 2018 at Croft Memorial Hall, 5, Mustard Lane Croft, Warrington WA3 7BQ. It is free to attend with tea & coffee served from 6-40pm and meeting begins at 7pm.
