28th March 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th March, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Don't forget this weekend, the 1st and 2nd of April it is the Northern Angling Show which gets better every year, this time there are over 150 exhibitors. Call in and see us on stand D147.

Bradley Nicholls took his nine years old son Callum for a short session on Ackers Pits on Sunday. Fishing a waggler towards the far bank with slow sinking bread Callum landed four carp by himself, best around 7lbs in only an hour. This will be a magic sixty minutes that he will remember forever. So, come on all you dads, grandads, uncles, in fact all senior members should make the commitment to introduce a youngster to our fantastic sport.

Chris Connell enjoyed a good session on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery on Tuesday where he started on the short pole using maggot and caught lots of roach. At the same time, he was feeding a nine metre line where from his first put in he caught a fish every cast made up of carp, perch, crucians and skimmers. All fish fell to soft pellet and he even took corn as a change of bait but ended up feeding this to the swans, happy days all round.

Ian Shepherd made the most of the good weather on Tuesday and took a trip to High Legh Fisheries. He legered with a PVA bag containing strawberry pellets and landed six carp to just over 10lbs losing two at the net. Ian enjoyed his session but the downside was that the company no longer makes these pellets and he only has half a bag remaining!

The tench are starting to feed on both Rixton Claypits and Grey mist where fish to over 6lbs are being caught. A few carp have been caught but nothing to set the world on fire. Keep putting the bait in guys😊

Lenny 'End Peg' Dutton won our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday where living up to the nickname given to him by his match mates he weighed in 2-8-12 of roach and skimmers taken on bread punch. There was no need to ask what second placed George Barber used as rumours are rife that he has shares in Warburtons. He weighed in 1-12-0 of small roach.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed a session at Statham pool on Saturday despite the rising water level that came up 5inches whilst he was fishing. It didn't seem to put the fish off the feed as he ended up with over forty roach, skimmers, rudd, and hybrids plus a bonus bream around 3.5lbs taken on caster in the last hour. He witnessed a member on the opposite bank net at least seven carp, one looked to be a good double. Our bailiff reported dropping water levels on Tuesday evening so it looks promising for the weekend.

I notice that a few members have been catching the silver fish we stocked recently at our Offa's Dyke Fisheries. Don't forget any senior member can take a youngster aged twelve or under to try a spot of fishing for free at this venue, the only condition being that it must be on a one to one basis. Offa's is an ideal place to introduce potential anglers of the future to our sport.

Don't forget the Northern Angling Show on the 1st and 2nd April and especially a reminder to all those members who have promised me their catch pictures for our display stand. I would be eternally grateful for any photographs ASAP.

A few members have been caught by Environment Agency bailiffs and fined for fishing without a national licence. It is also a rule of our club that all members must have one as the money goes towards maintaining, improving, and developing fisheries.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was held on the Trent & Mersey at Farm Road this Monday in the hope that they could find a few fish following some hard matches over past weeks. Jimmy Byrne won with 5-0-6 having a pound to spare over John Dagnall in second place with exactly 4lbs. Both anglers fished the pole starting off on punched bread followed by pinkie and caster. John had been feeding caster across and went over in the last half hour to net four plump roach. Definitely the best result for some time with all anglers with one exception weighing over a couple of pounds.

Many thanks to the team of regular volunteers who turned out on Sunday to our Mount Fishery at Buckley. They cleared undergrowth, overhanging trees, and branches to open up pegs and create new ones  These guys and in fact all our volunteers who work selflessly for the benefit of all members are solid gold.

The tench and carp are definitely waking up on Grey Mist Mere where on Monday Norbert Molnare landed a 22lbs carp taken on Krill boilie. Eric J Smith and his grandson Callum also visited the Mist this week where they managed a tench apiece on maggot feeder. Callum, a keen photographer saw a flash of blue so camera in hand he headed towards a likely spot where he thought a kingfisher had perched. Only to return twenty minutes later having crept commando style through the undergrowth to find the targeted orange breast plumage was in fact a float hanging from a branch. Specsavers?

Mark Pryor and his mate Steve Draper enjoyed a session on the River Dane at Holmes Chapel on Saturday where after catching a brace of trout Steve moved swim to end up with nine chub. All fish fell to either meat or caster using a hemp packed feeder. Steve managed two chub but still had an enjoyable day. Unlike myself on the Dee at Worthenbury when hooking my one and only fish of the afternoon promptly lost it!

The last Sunday River Mersey match this week until the season reopens on the 16th June was another low weight affair won by Martin Lenihan with twenty small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 2-2-0. Jim Gannon took second place with 1-13-0. I bet the guys are hoping for better sport during their mid-year series.

At last, following a few section wins and a trio of placings committee member Graham Belton won our Bridgewater Canal Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday for the first time this year. Graham drew an end peg at Preston Brook and included a couple of bonus skimmer bream in his catch to weigh 2-14-8. He caught his fish on pole and bread punch tactics. Ron Durr was in second place with 1-9-10. No other angler broke a pound.

Well done and thankyou to the small but select group of three volunteers who turned out on Saturday to join our committee members and bailiffs at Grey Mist Mere in filling two one ton tote sacks of rubbish. OK there was quite a large proportion that had 'overflowed' from the adjacent household waste site but also plenty left by scum who do not deserve to be called anglers.

Two members were banned at our committee meeting this week, one for litter (excrement) left behind his peg and the other for fishing overnight without booking on and driving his vehicle out of bounds. In the first instance, I would remind members that they are responsible for their own lavatory needs which they should dispose of at home. It is a simple matter and without going into detail it is not exactly rocket science. As regards night permit holders booking on either by phone call or text please ensure you have a decent signal for venues such as Sandiway and Moore Quarry because if we do not receive your message you are not booked on.

There is a working party at Grey Mist Mere at 10am on Saturday and the water is closed for the day. Only those members that take part may book on for the night session. It is mainly a clean-up and a few pegs tidied. For the record a few carp and tench were caught over the weekend, the best just nudging over 20lbs.

The Sunday River Mersey match this week was really hard with bites scarce to come by and to top it all it was pouring down with rain and miserable. Winner, Eddie Frangleton tempted 12 tiny roach on a ground bait feeder and maggot for 1-5-0 followed in second place by match organiser Ray Boden who weighed 1-1-0. It is the last match of the season next Sunday as our rivers close for coarse fishing on the 14th March for three months. I say it every year but it is high time this anomaly was addressed by the Environment Agency. It would be a simple matter for them to commission a full survey of licence holding anglers. The question is quite simple, Open or Closed?

There was a shock of the best sort on our Bridgewater Canal Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday at Grappenhall. It was the first time this year that the venue had been match fished so the winning weight of 31-8-0 caught by Graham Stokes rather came out of the blue. It just happened to also be Graham's debut on this regular series where fishing bread at 11metres he landed ten bream to 4lbs. Second placed Roy Rogers had one bream weighing 3-12-0. There were hardly any roach caught.
