Tony Rough managed to fit in a two hour session on the Alyn in Hope on Sunday morning. The river level was very low so he decided to fish one of the bends that a local ex-angler informed him was once known as eel corner. Fishing a small crystal waggler and feeding just five or six maggots at a time he caught half a dozen small grayling, and around a dozen small brown trout. On his own admission not a huge catch but nevertheless great fun on light tackle and his old faithful canal rod in pleasant surroundings. Enjoyment of our sport is not solely about catching big nets of fish although it does help.
Committee member Ade Green and yours truly were out and about again on WAA business at our stretch of the river Wye on Monday where we are trying to sort out the access problems. It is a long drive and it would have been a waste if we had not packed our rods in the off-chance that we may have time to wet a line. Well, as you may have guessed the opportunity arose and in my usual gentlemanly manner I gave Ade the first choice of swims whereupon he predictably picked the boss barbel/chub peg. We both set up feeder tackle and it was a race for the first fish, again it was down to me, a lovely brownie of around a pound which was followed by eight others, a few grayling, and a solitary dace. All on maggot but not a sign on pellet or caster. As for Ade he only had the one fish, a chub of around 4lbs taken on halibut pellet, but to be fair he did miss a good bite when I was borrowing some tape from him for my feeder.
Danny Sixsmith put in a rare appearance on our Mersey Saturday Series match and ended up a clear winner with 10-9-0 of roach and hybrids to 12oz taken on pole and maggot tactics. Derek Bibby was in runner-up spot with 7-11-0 of roach and small chub. It is nice to see the chub appearing in catches as enough were stocked in the river both by WAA and the Environment Agency but for some reason they don't appear to reach any size much above the pound mark despite the abundance of natural food in the river. The Victoria Park stretch was the venue for our Sunday Series match which saw Derek Bibby move up a place to share the win jointly with match organiser Ray Boden both on 8-7-0 taken on pole and maggot.
The Disabled & Over 60's match weights on the Trent & Mersey Canal were down from the previous week's results but were still very respectable taking into account the changing weather conditions. Jimmy Byrne was the winner with 5-13-0. Derek Bibby who is never too far from the money collected another second place with 4-4-8 making a total of two seconds and a win over the three day period.
