All the pegs are now open on the large lake at Sandiway with the exception of the two end pegs on the Oak Tree where steps are currently being built. Many thanks to our members who helped with the improvement work; it's looking good despite the fishing being hard. Not much change there of course, but what a place to set up your rods. Just a few tench reported so it can only get better.
At Rixton Claypits on Sunday Graham Collings had a super looking mirror of 21-12-0 followed the next day with a 13-8-0 common. So at least the carp here are feeding with quite a few spotted in the margins. Other members reported tench to 6lbs and bream to 5lbs. The spring heralds the continuation of the work started last year, unlike Sandiway there are no machines here to help so it is hard graft. If you are interested in helping please give me a ring.
It was however disappointing to find disgusting amounts of litter on several pegs, left according to sources by teenage so called anglers, I removed a full bin-sack. Well, if they read this I hope they are proud of themselves, because they will at some time be caught and brought to account. As a members club it is high time others took a measure of responsibility to help deter and banish those who leave litter from WAA.
Climbing off my soapbox, sport at Grey Mist Mere has picked up with a few of the 'new' carp showing, but tench are now really starting to feed. Heavy tackle does them no justice but using balanced tackle they give a good account of themselves.
I had a walk around Phoenix Park Lake earlier in the week and chatted to one of our members who had just weighed and returned a bream of 8lbs. Another member reported a good pole session catching roach on maggot just over the near shelf. Our local management team have opened up and refurbished two more pegs which look really tasty. At present Halton Council are building a dipping platform near the island plus an angling teaching platform.
One of our new bailiffs at Cicily Mill Pool reports a good session on the pole, using pellet he had good sport with roach and skimmers. The recent spell of sunshine raised water temperatures on this shallow fishery so encouraging the tench and carp to feed. So far the famous common has been caught and a twenty reported. Don't forget it is only one rod on this small fishery.
Our Wigan Fisheries Team have just taken delivery of a 'new' cabin and store at Woodshaw Reservoir which will make their job a lot easier and be especially useful when they run their annual junior match series. You never know, if you catch the lads at home you might get a brew. As for the fishing, Malpin and the Carp Pool are fishing well with plenty of roach and crucians feeding at Woodshaw.
