The rivers are generally fishing well at the moment member Mark Brooks for one is enjoying the sport on offer. After a successful trip to Almere Ferry two weeks ago when he had a nice silver fish haul but was ripped off by bigger fish he returned last Thursday to the same spot but with heavier gear to target the bigger fish. The result was a barbel of 8lb 2oz and much to his amazement his new personal best barbel of 12lb 9oz.
Just on the subject of big fish a reminder that it is important to handle them with care and although all fish should be treated with equal care some species are more delicate than others big perch, pike and barbel in particularly.
There are some useful tips and pointers regarding how to prepare and get the best photograph of your specimen fish within the rules of the Baitech catch of the month competition on our website. It is very important that fish are retained for the shortest possible time in order to get your photo, handled carefully with wet hands; never ever a dry towel or rag which will remove their protective coating and leave them vulnerable to disease.
Barbel which are particularly hard fighting fish should be held carefully in the water so that they can recover before being released back into the flow.
The annual prize presentation and match was a great success the canal fished very well and the weather was exceptionally kind. The minnows were buzzing with excitement as to who the mystery match were, they were kept in suspense until all the prizes and medals had been presented then all was revealed. The winning team on the day Craig Ritchie, Jack Bellis, and three of our minnows group James Wooding, Sam O'Neil and Euan Mc Gann. Thanks must go to all our coaches and volunteer helpers who made the day and all the coaching/match sessions possible throughout the summer. They are already planning next for next year.
The Mersey Open, Race night and the Guess the weight of the Pumpkin competition combined have raised just over £2000 the amount needed to enable Helen Dagnall and Wendy Locker to compete in the World Champs in South Africa. They have asked me to pass on their sincere thanks to all those who have kindly supported them in their efforts to raise the funds.
