31st May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

We find ourselves back on Grey Mist again this week this time it was David Tomkinson`s turn to fill his boots. Fishing the pellet feeder using his home made 8mm boilies and mixed pellets he could hardly keep a rod in the water has 17 Tench graced his landing net, 4 weighing over 8lbs. He also reports losing 5 more along with 3 carp, well done that man.

Steven Worral also chose The Mist in search of the carp, He spodded 3 different crushed, chopped and whole boilies to a clear patch next to some Lillie pads and fished Barrel wafters on a noodle rig, well his rig must have been on the right spot has he finished his session with 3 mirror carp of 19lbs 14oz, 21lbs 7oz and 24lbs and 24lbs 10oz.

Stephen Magee took time out this past week to have a go at some lure fishing on the Bridgewater Canal, He reports catching a few perch but his session was rewarded with a small jack Pike of approximately 5lbs.

Stephen Spann had a couple of hours to kill this week and where better than next to a lake and his lake of choice was Phoenix Park. He finished his short session with 3 chunky Roach to 7ozs and a Perch weighing approximately 10ozs all caught on maggots.

This week's match held at Pickering`s Bridge saw Ron Durr draw noted Bream peg near the willows (but you still have to catch them), well he didn`t disappoint when he emptied a 5lb Bream, roach & Perch onto the scales to take top spot comfortably. The rest of the anglers found it a struggle with only another 4 breaking the 1lb mark, one of these being match organiser Jimmy Byrnes who was 2nd with 20 Roach and 4 Perch from Edwards yard. Most competitors scratched around for bites using bread & Pinkies has the Roach were reluctant to feed, more fish is the prediction this Thursday when there will be a match on Woodshaw.

1)  Ron Durr 6-13-0

2)  Jimmy Byrnes 1-10-0

3)  Alan Clarke 1-5-2

4)  Neil Buist 1-2-7

24th May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Head Bailiff James Makin was flying solo this week when he fished Grey Mist, only fishing for a night session he settled down and set his traps. This consisted of 2 rods rigged with Formula pop ups by RG baits on a Heli rig over a bed of freebies, he finally finished his session with 3 Tench biggest was 8lb & 2 carp biggest 22lb 6ozs also a smaller very old original 18lb on the nose.

Woodshaw reservoir was the venue for a dawn raid in search of crucians Kev Brindle, this was his 1st trip to the water so he surveyed the lake and settled on peg 22. After setting up 2 swims either side of the peg with hemp & caster he tackled up and watched as fish were topping. From the start he had net roach instantly but after 30 mins there were no signs of his intended quarry so he switched to corn on the hook and hey presto. Well 8 crucians later and numerous roach in between left him well pleased with his visit and he also commented on how well looked after the lake was.

Regular contributor to the blog Gary Whitehead paid a visit to Statham this past week intent on catching Roach, so pole fishing it was 3ft deep with a single maggot on a 18s hook under a .3g float feeding loose maggots. Gary finally got the Roach on the feed when the Pike gate crashed the part unperturbed, he went to his car where he always carries a lure rod and proceeded to add 2 small jacks to his catch using a 10 g Fox Rage Spikey.

Member Sonny Suroso paid a visit to The Mount Saturday and was well chuffed with the 14lbs common taken on a Ronnie rig with krill Wafter.

I bumped into Daniel Martin on the Mist Friday while I was helping with some maintenance and we got chatting seem Daniel has been giving the Tench a right good hiding and proof was in the pudding has he hooked into the 10th of that session. This had increased to 11 by the time his catch report came in the biggest went 7lbs 3oz and all were caught using flat method feeders with micros and 8mm banded dumbbell Wafter, keep searching for that 8lber Daniel.

Thank you to all our volunteers who were out and about on our fisheries this past week your work is much appreciated you know who you are. Please be patient with our volunteers if you're out fishing just remember They would probably prefer to be where you are.

This week's match held close to the Broken Cross was won by George Barber AKA the breadman with an all roach catch on you guessed it bread punch, close behind was Jimmy Byrnes after contending with a rogue Pike, best action was by the conker trees. Geoff Brookes was 3rd catching small Roach & Perch, 20 anglers fished and all but 1 weighed in which is a good sign following the pollution last year.

17th May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I start my first blog with an ongoing issue with the Sankey Canal at Carterhouse, the canal is slowly losing water now that Fiddlers Ferry power station has been decommissioned and is no longer pumping water in, this has affected the canal from the back of Fiddlers Ferry down to Spike Island. Halton Borough Council and other agencies are dealing with the situation and Warrington Anglers have liaised with all concerned and we are awaiting health checks. Moving fish without these could be fatal to any fishery it only takes 1 diseased fish. Warrington Anglers do not condone the movement of fish without the permission of the association and would result in that person/member being reported to the authorities and expelled from the club.

Andrew Burrows our new treasurer took time out from his busy schedule to spend a overnight session on Appleton Reservoir with his wingman & head bailiff James Makin. True to form before setting up they both set about checking the lake, tidying a small amount of litter and trimming back overgrown branches. They finally finished setting up and settled in for the night. Well they were rewarded for their efforts when Andrew slipped his net under a new PB Mirror carp of 27 lbs known has 2 scale & also a 4lb Tench for good measure. Successful method was a hair rigged yellow pop up on a size 10 hook using a heli rig over a bed of corn and chopped worm, James was reduced to photographer.

Ken Hewitt and travelling companion Dave Gardner were once again out on Woodshaw lake this week Ken had 17 fish in total, 14 Roach and 3 Perch and Dave catching 9 fish, 5 Roach, 2 Perch around the 1lb mark and a 3lb carp. 7mtr whip and float was the best method.

Daniel Stewart decided this week that a trip to the Ribble was in order so starting at our downstream limit using Toby & spinner lures, he concentrated on the shallower and faster swims & pools to try and avoid the course fish. Despite his efforts nothing graced the landing net, so a trip over the hill to the other side opposite Marls Wood saw him bumping into another member just packing up who had managed a brace of brown Trout they both agreed that the river needed a good flush through.

On a trip up to Big Sandiway i bumped into a member Ken who was fishing the caravan swim he had been on for the night and was fishing for Tench. Now although a Tinca had not paid him a visit he was more than happy with the 37.5 lbs Mirror Carp that he had landed that morning. He was fishing 2lb test curve rods with inline maggot feeder and a worm hook bait over a bed of particles at 36 mtrs he says it put up quite a battle on his lighter gear.

Just a note to members fishing the Sandiway complex access is only via Nova Scotia Lane and not through the farms.

Our Disabled & over 60s match was at Preston Brook where Bob Fitz just edged out Alan Faulkner by 3oz both having caught a Bream and silvers to notch up his 1st win of the year, George Barber was a close 3rd with 20 Silver Bream and Roach, 15 fished.

10th May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Andy Corr and his mate Andy Donegan were out again on Sunday, this time for their first ever visit to our Phoenix Park fishery. They started off fishing the pole at 11metres targeting roach and skimmers but with none showing and after being snapped off three times they beefed up their end tackle and swapped to 12's elastic. It wasn't long before Andy C struck into a hard fighting fish which turned out to be the biggest tench of the session at 6lbs. He ended up with ten tench and Andy D with five which averaged around the 4lbs mark. They fed chopped worm and caster but neither worked on the hook and a change to three dead maggots did the trick. A return visit for the two Andys is on the cards.

Tom Shannon enjoyed a great Friday evening fishing in the rain on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery having the place completely to himself. Alternating between a maggot or method feeder fish must have been queuing up as he was barely able to keep his rod on the rest. Maggot feeder turned out to be the most productive method producing a decent catch of crucians and roach but no sign of any tench.

The Environment Agency Fisheries staff saved thousands of fish on the Trent & Mersey Canal last November by quickly deploying aeration equipment to combat an effluent pollution. Obviously, there were some deaths and fish were displaced causing sport on normally productive stretches to be below par. However, this week good news from well-known match angler Steve Brookes who tried the stretch at Croxton Lane, Middlewich where in a two-hour rainy Friday evening session he ended up with 20 skimmers, a few roach, and a bonus 2lbs eel. All pole caught on pinkie.

The Mount at Buckley produced some quality perch last week for Ian Millington with three or four red maggots on the hook. Dave Singleton on Thursday saw no perch but had fifteen quality roach to over the 1lb mark taken close in on double maggot over groundbait. The following day Dave Egerton managed a brace of carp caught in the margin on a white barrel wafter over particles and pellet. The fishery also produces some decent bream and tench and is a good general fishery always worth a visit.

Martin James enjoyed his Friday evening session last week at Rixton Claypits managing to land five bream around the 3 to 4lbs mark fishing legered corn despite a few fish looking to be spawning in some areas. He was also complimentary about the excellent peg restoration work carried out by our volunteers.

Info for the Weaver Navigation devotees that our 'mystery man' who refuses to be named has been out again erecting WAA signs, creating new, and refurbishing pegs since the close season kicked in. I dropped him some materials down this week and it is really looking good. Can hardly wait for the 16th June. His hard work is much appreciated by members who visit this local venue.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Beech Road pegged from the renowned Pear Tree peg though into the Red Lane stretch. The winner Dave Howard who drew next to the end peg in Red Lane put 5-14-0 on the scales made up small roach, perch, and a 4lbs bonus bream caught on worm. The runner-up was Alan Brown on the end peg who also included a 4lbs bonus slab to boost his weight to 5-6-0. Alan caught his fish on bread punch. Seventeen anglers turned out.

3rd May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd May 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett decided to give the Mount a go on Tuesday, probably his first visit to the venue in a couple of years. Setting up with a method feeder using meat, corn and pellet accounted for a clonking roach Neil reckons must have been over 2lbs, three other sizeable roach, a nice bream, and five carp.  Two of the carp were big doubles, the first being the largest fish he had landed this year. He doesn't usually weigh fish and true to form the batteries in the scales were dead anyway so he will never know its weight. It was however a two-handed job to lift it back in.  Neil reckons that this fishery is a must venue for anyone needing a bit of a confidence boost :-) This would probably be seconded by member George Kelly who landed a decent carp during his Saturday session.

Andy Corr and his mate enjoyed a change of venue this week on our Wide Hole Fishery at Poynton where their pole and chopped worm and caster accounted for a decent catch of bream for them both. This post caused a bit of dissent on our members group but with obviously no fish over 2.5lbs it was not in breach of any rules. Anyway Andy & Co many thanks for sharing your catch information with fellow members.

Bream are definitely on the feed at Rixton Claypits with members Graham Oakes and Paul Delahaye reporting catches this week. Paul lost what he thought was more than likely a big carp. Worth a visit.

Simon Oldfield did a few hours stalking at Appleton Reservoir this past week. Presenting freelined bread in the margins accounted for a chunky little mirror.

Joe Grier was happy with the mirror carp he caught from Grey Mist on Saturday evening which he landed after a tussle on tackle set-up for tench.

Our popular Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match was fished this week on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir. As the regulars were waiting to start the draw two pleasure anglers appeared. As always, our local Wigan fisheries team leader Trevor Gray sorted them out with two decent pegs. One of the pair John Rostron asked if he could fish the match but when he was told it was a fiver pools, he said he would need to meet his wife to pick up the money. Jimmy reserved him peg 13 and as the regulars were settling in their swims John appeared with his pools money. Well as it turned out 13 was his lucky number, fishing the pole with red maggot over micro-pellets John landed three crucians and three skimmer bream for a winning weight of 11-2-0. Ray Boden on the adjacent peg was the runner-up with a catch of two crucians, skimmers, and roach for 8-13-0. Twenty-one anglers turned out.
