28th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett was rewarded with a cracking roach session at Appleton Reservoir last Thursday when he decided to give the fishery a try as the weather turns cooler. He fished the tip with a small groundbait feeder and hemp with corn on the hook to catch thirty roach with some over a pound. The carp anglers there were also into fish with the nearest one to him landing five. A good all-round fishery.

Now this is where envy starts to creep in as Neil was out again the following day with a change of venue to Rixton Claypits. Fishing a method feeder with corn and meat his first fish was a lovely roach over a pound followed by five others until the bream moved in resulting in eighteen of the bronze beauties coming to the net.

Our picturesque stretch of the Weaver Navigation is still producing some good sport from the pegs maintained along with the never-ending grass strimming by our anonymous dedicated volunteer. Andy Corr reports a good Friday morning session of roach, skimmers, and gudgeon. Members thinking of fishing the venue on Saturday 2nd October would be advised to give it a miss between the times 8am to 4pm when Runcorn Rowing Club will be holding an event which could involve as many as forty boats (or more) on the water competing in what are in effect time trials.

Ian Roberts reports having a good dace catch from the River Dee at Worthenbury and he stopped counting at thirty! All fell to stick-float and bronze maggot. There was a similar report from further downstream on our Shocklach stretch by Tony Baron who had grayling, small chub and a few dace whereas his mate in a deeper swim had a better day with plenty of nice sized dace. Our rivers will no doubt benefit by the recent rain.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished on the Victoria Park stretch of the river and saw a reversal of last week's Boden/Billing result with Harry Billing reclaiming first place pushing Ray into the runner-up spot. Harry fished his usual pole with maggot and pinkie for a mixed net of roach and perch for a weight of 9-15-0. Ray wasn't that far behind when he put a similar catch on the scales which registered 9-9-0. Nineteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hill Top Road. It had been some time since a match was held on these pegs but Jeff Stoll certainly had no trouble finding the fish with a winning weight of roach plus a few rudd for 7-13-0. He fished pole and bread-punch changing to caster which brought some better stamp roach to 8oz. Second placed Ron Durr with 4-8-0 included a bonus bream of around 2.5lbs to his net of roach. Due to the early morning horrendous weather only eleven anglers fished so a change of scenery to Woodshaw Reservoir next week should boost attendance with reports of plenty of crucians, roach, and perch being caught.

21st September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Callum White and his dad Michael have been having some great success with perch on the Bridgewater Canal at the Manchester end. Callum aged 9years despite being only recently introduced to our sport has been catching some impressive specimens on soft plastic lures.

And another youngster, Olive James aged 4years has been introduced to our sport this week by her dad, Martin who took her to the Bridgewater at Grappenhall for her first taste of angling. She caught two roach on bread-punch followed by four perch on worm.

Anthony Rough reports just having returned from his annual trip to our stretch of the river at Hay-on- Wye. The river was running slow and clear with fishing on the first day hard with only one barbel and six chub. Fishing the same swim on the second day was much better with five barbel to 5lbs, some good-sized chub, plus smaller ones. Anthony fished a groundbait feeder on both days with meat or pellet hookbait. His only problem was with a swan that he befriended which kept pecking him until he fed it which as he loves nature was one of the highlights of the trip.

Ted Small after reading members catch reports in my column was spurred on to try the Weaver Navigation for the first time this year. He had the place to himself and was soon into fish with plenty of bites from roach, perch, and a few skimmers until eventually he was plagued by gudgeon. All were caught on red maggot and waggler.

Our stretch of the Vyrnwy at Llanymynech seems to be attracting the attention of members with Chris Henstone this week reporting a couple of hours trotting with a centre-pin and maggot for a bite every cast. Lots of chub, dace, roach, and bleak. Worth a visit.

The Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and saw Ray Boden as the clear winner with a healthy margin over second placed Harry Billing. Ray fished short pole and maggot for a mixed net of roach and perch for a weight of 14-3-0. Harry with the same mix of fish weighed-in 10-7-0 taken on the pole using maggot and pinkie. Twenty anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane. It turned out to be a low weight event which saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne as the winner with an all roach catch weighing 4-11-0 taken on pole and bread with some better stamp fish on caster. Terry Dunn was the runner-up with 3-0-0 of roach on maggot. Fourteen anglers fished.

14th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Nick Shenston and Dave Saunders managed to fix up a new Warrington Anglers Association private fishing sign on our stretch of the Vyrnwy at Llanymynech to hopefully deter illegal fishing. The report that there are plenty of small chub and grayling to be caught on both float and fly tactics.

Andy Corr who regularly shares his catch reports with members reports a cracking session on the Weaver Navigation where along with his mate they both had decent nets of silvers, perch, skimmers, including some big gudgeon. They fed dark groundbait with hemp and dead maggots at 5metres and fished maggot over the top.

Dave Edwards reports a catch of fifteen bream from Wide Hole on a groundbait feeder and double maggot including three perch, one he reckons was a good 1.5lbs. The bream were around the 2.5lb mark. We intend to improve the parking presently on the adjacent field which is owned by our club.

Terry Dunn was having a decent session on the Cock-fight length of the Bridgewater with around 9lbs of fish already in the net, but a strange think happened not once but twice as he was bringing in small roach something grabbed them but when the fish were pulled free there were no bite marks. Its quite likely these were taken by decent sized perch, possibly worth a go by the drop-shotters.

The Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished at the Victoria Park stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing take his second win on the venue on consecutive days. Harry had won the Northern River Masters qualifier on Saturday with an impressive weight of 19-11-0 and followed this the next day with 10-3-0 which was enough to take top spot. He fished the pole for roach and perch but when sport slowed swapped over to a size 22's and pinkie for the second half of the match. Jimmy Byrne took second place with around 5lbs of roach and perch on the pole plus a couple of skimmers taken when he briefly swapped over the a small groundbait feeder for a weight of 7-2-0. Twenty-one anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Acton Grange. In what turned out to be a low weight event Roy Rogers was the winner with 3-12-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Jeff Stoll was the runner-up with a similar net for 3-3-0. Twelve anglers fished.

7th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last Wednesday two of the younger members of the Preston family of mad keen carp anglers were out on Grey Mist. This time Marley took his younger brother Leon 11 years and let him fish the spot that he normally fishes with the result after only thirty minutes the youngster landed a cracking beauty of 19-8-0. The successful method was one of the families closely guarded secret boilie mix 'specials' with crushed boilies in a PVA bag.

Mark Mathews enjoyed a nice pre-birthday catch on Friday at Grey Mist in the form of a common carp of 22lbs. The fish fell for a pre-drilled[fl1]  14mm halibut pellet over a bed of loose-fed 8mm robin red pellet.

Some of the lilies were selectively sprayed at Rixton Claypits on Tuesday and will be repeated next year as an ongoing project, however this did not stop the fish feeding on what was a scorcher of a day. Neil Plunkett managed a couple of nice bream, a large roach, and a tench. Ian Summers reported an all roach catch taken on pole and pellet of around 10lbs and lost a decent fish which stretched his elastic to its limits.

Andy Corr reports a cracking catch of roach from Appleton Reservoir over last weekend all taken on the pole at 11metres. Dave Grey fished a different method, a small groundbait feeder and double maggot for an equally decent catch of roach. Many years ago, this water was part of a graduate study from Liverpool University which pointed to the fact that they were a fast-growing strain. I must admit reports of large roach are rare but with the amounts of high protein carp baits being fed there must be some fair specimens.

Bailiff Chris Connell after checking that all anglers were members on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery enjoyed some well-earned 'me time' and a decent evening's fishing. Chris had quality roach and fished at 13metres on corn at dead depth for some feisty crucians.

The Sunday Mersey Pairs Match was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and members drew their pegs in two sections pairing with the corresponding number in the other section which added interest to a normal Series match. The individual winner was Alan Faulkner who started off on a groundbait feeder and maggot to snare a bonus bream of 3lbs plus a decent skimmer over a pound. A change then to pole and maggot added roach and perch to end up with an overall weight of 8-10-0. Bob Clough took second place with 7-4-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. The winning pair were Bob Clough paired with Jimmy Gannon who added 6-12-0 to give a total weight of 14lbs exactly. The second pair included the overall winner Alan Faulkner and Jimmy Byrne who added 4-7-0 to make a total weight of 13-1-0. Twenty-four anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury Labs. Jeff Stoll who back on the Warrington match scene and knocking on the door the past few weeks was the clear winner with 4-15-0 and over a pound to spare from the runner-up George 'Breadman' Barber who weighed in 3-13-0 of roach and skimmers, all caught on the white stuff. Jeff had a similar mix of fish all caught on the pole at 4metres on maggot and pinkie. Seventeen anglers fished.

Some filthy individual is not adhering to our rule 28 which clearly states that all litter must be taken home. This is evident by the amount of bagged litter and even a dumped bed-chair left by the bins adjacent to our Sandiway entrance gate. Anyone caught in breach of this rule will simply lose their membership.
