16th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with great sadness that I must report that our friend and longstanding volunteer Barrie Walsh who most of you who have fished at Woodshaw Reservoir and Fosters Pools will know has passed away during the early hours of last Thursday morning. Barrie was even at Woodshaw on Wednesday afternoon putting a new motor mower through its paces. He was a founding member of the successful team who have lovingly cared for the Wigan waters over many years. Our condolences are with his wife Eleanor and family.

Gary Whitehead had a busy early morning two-hour session on the Bridgewater Canal on Sunday catching over thirty perch on small lures. The previous day he had taken his young son to the Bridgewater for a taster session on a short pole in the hope that he gets the bug when he is a bit older. If the look of concentration on the youngster's face is anything to go by, I have no doubt whatsoever that it will happen sooner than later.

Peter Boyle likewise introduced his grandson Henry aged 6years for the first time to our fantastic sport of angling this week on the Bridgewater Canal. Peter set him up with a top two sections of pole on which he caught his first fish, a small roach within five minutes. Henry was loose-feeding maggot as though he had done so for years, each time he fed it was bang on the money around his float.  I have no doubt that it will be a part of his memory for many years to come as he toted up a catch of around thirty roach and perch.

And still with youngsters on the 'Bridgie' five-year-old Elliot Clarke also enjoyed a short tea-time session at Preston Brook this week fishing a short pole and red maggot to catch his first canal roach, followed by others as the fish homed in on the free offerings.

Don't forget any paid-up senior member can take a youngster 12 years and under on a one-to-one basis for free on four of our fisheries. Woodshaw Reservoir, Ackers Pit, Offa's Dyke, and the Bridgewater Canal.  So, if you are a senior member what are you waiting for!

Phil Brown set-up on Grey Mist last week with tench as his target species but not before first carefully raking his swim which may scare the fish initially but usually, they return eventually to mop up any delicacies that may have been disturbed. Phil ended up with seven of the olive-green beauties and a single roach. He fished a small method feeder using a Krill method mix and a single piece of fake corn on the hook using two swims, one at 5metres and the other at 10.

Our annual rod only match on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing the easy winner with a weight of 13-11-0 having 4lbs to spare over runner-up Jonathan Green's net of 9-5-0. They both fished the bolo, Harry using red maggot or pinkie over groundbait laced with caster and worm to catch silver bream, roach, and perch with Jonathan sticking to red maggot. Twenty-one anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane.  Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the winner with 3-5-8 made up of one small skimmer, roach, and perch on pinkie. Peter Davies took second place with a weight of 3-2-0 and included a brace of better stamp skimmers plus a few roach and perch. Twenty anglers fished.

Please note that Pickerings Bridge car park will be closed to members and the lock changed to enable necessary works to take place.
