31st August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

When Andy Humphreys went to Phoenix Park Lake on Wednesday morning where he reported that the tench were bubbling like crazy as they were feeding in the silt. But try as he might Andy couldn't get a bite on large baits and a heavier rig so he switched to a light rig and maggots for the last couple of hours and was pleased to catch plenty of silvers, but the inevitable happened and he was smashed up by a tench.

Gary Whitehead enjoyed a few hours on the Weaver Navigation on Thursday morning and enjoyed a nice catch of bream and roach fishing maggot of the bottom over hemp and groundbait. I really cannot understand why more members don't give this stretch a try as they are comfortable pegs and you can actually park your car by where you are fishing.

Trevor Gray enjoyed a cracking 4hour session on Woodshaw Reservoir on Wednesday last practicing no doubt for Monday's match on the fishery. He caught thirty crucian carp some of which were hybrids to 3lbs with the best true crucian at around 1.5lbs. He gave his home-made special paste a miss and all were caught on pole and banded pellet whilst feeding with micro-pellets. Sadly, the magic didn't show upon match day, but that's fishing. Dean Loftus was on the venue the following day and reported 'a ton of silvers, skimmers, perch, and a few crucians.

Our Mersey Match Series Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing drop to second place this week ousted out by Bob Clough with 7-7-0 of roach and perch taken on both pole and bolo with maggot and groundbait. Close behind Harry was in the runner-up position with exactly 7-0-0. The river was very low and probably as a result no bream appeared in catches, just the odd small skimmer. Twenty-one anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week at our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan before which the members held a minute's silence for Barrie Walsh who recently passed away. Barrie was a valued member of the small team of dedicated volunteers who for many years have maintained this fishery and other local waters to an excellent standard. Local rod, Alan Birchall was the winner with a weight of 9-0-0 caught from peg 11. His net was made up of skimmers on pole-fished pellet plus roach on caster. Second placed Alan Brown drew peg 12 and caught a bonus bream of 2lbs plus to which he added roach and perch. Nineteen anglers fished.

24th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last week it was all about youngsters fishing exploits, well this week we are at the other end of the spectrum, anglers with many years angling experience. Whilst the lilies were being sprayed on Tuesday at Grey Mist, I was redundant but used the time litter picking and chatting to members, face to face away from social media. Paul Johnstone having raked his peg was on a perch every cast fishing waggler and double red maggot. He ended his session having caught a shed-full of stripeys along with a few roach, plus seven small tench which shows that the weedy conditions work for the fish and provided that the cormorants keep away this water has new blood to ensure a bright future for this popular species.

Joe Parody on the opposite side of the Mist was set-up with bite alarms and legered both fake corn and mini-boilies to end his session with six tench ranging from 2lbs to 6lbs. Another member reported three tench with the biggest at 8lbs and a younger member similarly reported having caught tench but was gutted having lost a decent carp at the net.

Committee member Ade Green decided on a trip to the Association stretch of the River Severn at Bicton on Monday. The last time he was at this venue another angler cheekily set-up unbeknown to him at the downstream side of an enormous willow bush which separated him from the mystery angler (me) who bagged up making the most of Ade's regular feeding. Alone on this visit with no one taking advantage he trotted a loafer float using maggot to catch dace, bleak, and lots of chublets with the best chub at around 2lbs. This is a picturesque stretch of the Severn and worth a visit.

The two self-declared old soldiers or as I prefer to call them the dynamic duo of Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt were are out fishing again on Monday morning. They had decided on a trip to High Legh which turned out to be a hard session. Ken initially started with a feeder and caught nothing, he swapped onto a waggler with maggot over particle bait and caught six perch and five roach around 3 to 6oz. Dave had a hard slog on a match rod with maggot for four perch and three roach and swapped to a method feeder with micro pellet, and 6mm red robins on the hook. He was snapped after a few minutes playing a fish but persevered and latched on again this time the fish straightened his hook. Third time lucky as they say, as a nice 12pound mirror in lovely condition finally lay in his landing net.

Our Mersey Match Series Sunday was fished on the Victoria Park stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing add another win to his belt with a weight of 12-10-0 made up of roach, perch, and silver bream taken on the pole and maggot with balls of groundbait added to the lose-fed maggot. Bas Chambers took the runner-up spot with an all roach and perch catch for 10-10-0, again pole and maggot with a spell on bolo. With an average weight of around 5lbs with no bream showing there were plenty of bites to be had and the winner could have almost come from any peg. Twenty-five anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane.  Rod Fraser was the clear winner exactly doubling the weight of second placed Jimmy Byrne. Rod made the most of an end peg draw and weighed in 14-2-0 made up of three bream taken on bread punch plus roach around 4oz taken on caster. Match organiser Jimmy drew the opposite end of the match for an all roach catch on pole and bread punch. Twenty anglers fished.

Please note that Pickerings Bridge car park will be closed to members and the lock changed to enable necessary works to take place.

16th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is with great sadness that I must report that our friend and longstanding volunteer Barrie Walsh who most of you who have fished at Woodshaw Reservoir and Fosters Pools will know has passed away during the early hours of last Thursday morning. Barrie was even at Woodshaw on Wednesday afternoon putting a new motor mower through its paces. He was a founding member of the successful team who have lovingly cared for the Wigan waters over many years. Our condolences are with his wife Eleanor and family.

Gary Whitehead had a busy early morning two-hour session on the Bridgewater Canal on Sunday catching over thirty perch on small lures. The previous day he had taken his young son to the Bridgewater for a taster session on a short pole in the hope that he gets the bug when he is a bit older. If the look of concentration on the youngster's face is anything to go by, I have no doubt whatsoever that it will happen sooner than later.

Peter Boyle likewise introduced his grandson Henry aged 6years for the first time to our fantastic sport of angling this week on the Bridgewater Canal. Peter set him up with a top two sections of pole on which he caught his first fish, a small roach within five minutes. Henry was loose-feeding maggot as though he had done so for years, each time he fed it was bang on the money around his float.  I have no doubt that it will be a part of his memory for many years to come as he toted up a catch of around thirty roach and perch.

And still with youngsters on the 'Bridgie' five-year-old Elliot Clarke also enjoyed a short tea-time session at Preston Brook this week fishing a short pole and red maggot to catch his first canal roach, followed by others as the fish homed in on the free offerings.

Don't forget any paid-up senior member can take a youngster 12 years and under on a one-to-one basis for free on four of our fisheries. Woodshaw Reservoir, Ackers Pit, Offa's Dyke, and the Bridgewater Canal.  So, if you are a senior member what are you waiting for!

Phil Brown set-up on Grey Mist last week with tench as his target species but not before first carefully raking his swim which may scare the fish initially but usually, they return eventually to mop up any delicacies that may have been disturbed. Phil ended up with seven of the olive-green beauties and a single roach. He fished a small method feeder using a Krill method mix and a single piece of fake corn on the hook using two swims, one at 5metres and the other at 10.

Our annual rod only match on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and saw Harry Billing the easy winner with a weight of 13-11-0 having 4lbs to spare over runner-up Jonathan Green's net of 9-5-0. They both fished the bolo, Harry using red maggot or pinkie over groundbait laced with caster and worm to catch silver bream, roach, and perch with Jonathan sticking to red maggot. Twenty-one anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane.  Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was the winner with 3-5-8 made up of one small skimmer, roach, and perch on pinkie. Peter Davies took second place with a weight of 3-2-0 and included a brace of better stamp skimmers plus a few roach and perch. Twenty anglers fished.

Please note that Pickerings Bridge car park will be closed to members and the lock changed to enable necessary works to take place.

10th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Marley Preston aged 11years enjoyed a session on Grey Mist on Monday when although the target carp did not show he managed a couple of decent sized tench. The following morning, he left his home at 5-30am hoping to return to the peg he had baited-up the previous evening, unfortunately this was not to be and undeterred he set up in another peg. As luck happened it turned out to be the right move when he eventually slid his net under his first ever carp from the Mist. It weighed 22-8-0 and fell for one of Marley's home-made boilies. There was a bit of history involved as it turned out to be the very same peg that his dad Mark had also caught his very first Mist carp as a youngster.

George Denzel enjoyed a cracking bream session last week at Arley Reservoir with a catch of sixteen bronze beauties, the best around 3.5lbs plus half a dozen chunky roach. He fished a block-end feeder packed with sweetcorn with a single piece on the hook.

Mike Pritchard on his regular Saturday session on the Mersey near Victoria Park ended up with a catch of around forty-eight fish taken on both maggot or caster. It was a species mix of dace, hybrids, roach, perch, and two chub around the 12ounce mark all taken on waggler tactics.

Bob Clough was the winner of our Mersey Challenge Shield Match on Sunday and with higher water levels resulting from early morning heavy rain he drew in a deeper area with less flow. Fishing a groundbait feeder with maggot and worm he had a bream of around 2lbs plus perch and roach but he sealed his win near the end of the match when a drop-back bite resulted in a 5lbs bream bringing his weight total to 9-13-0.  Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with six skimmer bream plus twenty roach and perch for a weight of 6-13-0 taken on groundbait feeder and maggot fished on the 12metre pole line. Eighteen anglers fished and the top four weights came from consecutive pegs downwards from the winner on peg 31.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge. Bas Chambers was the winner with almost a pound to spare with 4-11-0 made up of around sixty roach and perch taken on the pole with caster and maggot. George Hollis took second place with a weight of 3-12-0 and a same mix of fish. Twenty anglers fished.

A few members think that it is ok to either visit our fisheries or indeed fish when not in possession of their membership licence booklet and yet surprisingly in the case of the latter they always remember to bring their tackle and bait. Also a few members ignore the requirement to validate their issued licence by gluing their current signed photograph on the rear inside cover. The licence is the only proof of membership acceptable to our bailiffs. There are no valid excuses for rule breakers.

Please note that Pickerings Bridge car park will be closed to members and the lock changed to enable necessary works to take place.

3rd August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd August 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett spent 30-40 minutes raking out a mass of weed at Grey Mist last week and started with not too much expectation after setting up a couple of quiver tip rods using feeder and legered corn. As luck happens occasionally in our sport it turned into a good day as he landed five nice tench, losing a few more in the weed. He also set up a waggler and fished half depth over the sunken weed beds, managing a dozen nice roach and perch to maggot. Neil abandoned the waggler when the lightning storm came right over the lake and a carbon rod not a sensible thing to hold. The rain and hailstones were so violent that the lake appeared to smoke and steam and his peg was soon an inch deep in rain water, but as he said, "Who cares the sport was good! Home safe, a happy drowned rat." :-)

Malcolm Turner reported a nice session on the Mowpin fishery at Wigan last week and ended up with twenty-four fish, roach, rudd, bream, tench, and a crucian. And he had the pool to himself all day. The fishery is part of the Fosters Pools complex.

Will Lowndes reported catching a nice chub out of the Dee at Worthenbury on Monday that weighed in at 4-10-0 taken on a micro-crank bait. He also had a pike weighing around 7lbs and was really chuffed with his visit. Phil Tandy also reports catching a chub of 4-8-0 and a perch of 1-8-0 on legered red maggot.

Dave Gardner fished a brief morning session on the Mersey last Wednesday starting at 7am until midday. He was alone as the other member of the dynamic duo Ken Hewitt was otherwise engaged doing his civic duty on jury service. He fished a method feeder with red robin pellets and maggot and kicked off with an outstanding roach of 2-3-0 then nothing for a fair while except for two small perch plus a bream just under 3lbs followed by a small roach. I bet he enjoyed his morning better than his mate😉

Our Sunday River Match Series this week was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch which despite the recent thunder storms and still in need of some rain produced some reasonable weights. The conditions suited Harry Billing on his first match as a new member in what turned out to be a close contest when the first four anglers each put over 8lbs on the scales with not a single bream caught.  Harry just kept ahead to win with 8-13-0 taken fishing the pole feeding balls of groundbait laced with caster, worms, and maggots for a net of roach and perch.  Jonathan Green was the runner-up with a similar mix and a weight of 8-6-0 taken on bolo and loose-feeding maggot. Twenty-three anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Wigan. The Breadman was back, real name George Barber when after arriving at the venue late following an incident on the M6 motorway he arrived to find he had forgotten his sweetcorn with which he intended to target the crucian carp, and also found his maggots were not in the best of health, so it was decided for him, bread.  In almost a mirrored weights of the previous days Mersey match the first four were all over 8lbs but George was the winner with 8-13-0. He fished bread throughout on the pole at 11metres for a net made up of a single crucian, skimmers, and roach. In second place and back on the match scene was Jeff Stoll on his first appearance in the series which saw him with a decent crucian plus a 3lbs bream to add to his roach and skimmer catch for a weight of 8-7-0. Eighteen anglers fished.

Forthcoming Working Parties: Committee member Stu Brazier is looking to form a team of volunteers to improve and maintain Statham Pool. We are also looking to create more interest along the same lines on our Association owned Wide Hole Fishery at Poynton which is also in need of some TLC. So, if you fancy getting involved in either please ring or drop me an email.
