27th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Philip Brown was back at Grey Mist for a morning tench session on Saturday where although he found it slow going at first kept on feeding his swim 'little and often' with Sticky Baits Krill micro-pellets and Dynamite Baits krill method mix. He finished- up with fifteen tench caught with hair-rigged fake corn at the business end. Keith Starkey also enjoyed his day on Tuesday when he reported landing eight tench with the biggest weighing in at 6-6-0.

Andy Corr pre-baited the number one (Worthington) reservoir on Saturday night with the hope of a good net of bream when he arrived to fish the following morning. Well, the best laid plans of mice and men, not a bite on the tip in over three hours! So, a quick change of tactics to waggler and maggot for the last two hours thankfully saw Andy on 'a bite a chuck' from some quality perch. As he said, "Wish I'd done it earlier." For whatever reason members invariably give this, the largest reservoir a miss, preferring either Arley or Adlington?

I managed to escape for an evening session on the Weaver Navigation on Tuesday and thankfully missed out on the rain which was forecast. Sport was on the slow side but my elderly maggots and groundbait/micro-pellet mix did attract a few skimmers, roach, gudgeon, and perch with one a decent specimen.

The Tom James Open Match on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river which was sluggish and definitely as are many of our fisheries in need of some rain. However, the conditions didn't deter Jeff Shaw who drew peg 64 and notched-up his first Mersey win of the season with a weight of 5-2-0. He fished maggot on both pole and bolo for a net of roach and perch with the 'stripeys' definitely in abundance and striking at fry in the margins throughout the match. Eddie Frangleton took second place from peg 70 with a similar catch of roach and perch for 4-13-0. Twenty-four anglers fished.

There is a Warrington Rowing Club rescheduled racing event being held downstream of Kingsway Bridge on Sunday 1st August so please avoid fishing this length. The Mersey Match Series on the same day has been moved back to the Mersey Walk area.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal pegged from Daresbury Labs along the short length back towards Moore. Jimmy Byrne put together a winning catch of roach and perch for a weight of 5-13-0. (This is the area that following the water main burst in early May this year saw anglers making gloomy predictions when countless gallons of chlorinated water flooded into the canal). Anyway, Jimmy fished the pole starting off on bread-punch but changed to maggot and caster to take a better stamp of fish. Stu Patterson took second place with 4-13-0 and included a bonus bream of around 3lbs in his catch. Sixteen anglers fished.

Thanks to the members who turned out to the working party at Grey Mist last week during the boiling hot weather which saw a lot of clearance work achieved….we can now get some long-awaited stone delivered.

Forthcoming Working Parties: Saturday 31st July 09-30 onwards Small Sandiway Lake and the following day Sunday 1st August 10-00 onwards Rixton Claypits. If you fancy doing your bit to help your club simply turn up to either, you will be more than welcome and will enjoy the craic.
