27th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Philip Brown was back at Grey Mist for a morning tench session on Saturday where although he found it slow going at first kept on feeding his swim 'little and often' with Sticky Baits Krill micro-pellets and Dynamite Baits krill method mix. He finished- up with fifteen tench caught with hair-rigged fake corn at the business end. Keith Starkey also enjoyed his day on Tuesday when he reported landing eight tench with the biggest weighing in at 6-6-0.

Andy Corr pre-baited the number one (Worthington) reservoir on Saturday night with the hope of a good net of bream when he arrived to fish the following morning. Well, the best laid plans of mice and men, not a bite on the tip in over three hours! So, a quick change of tactics to waggler and maggot for the last two hours thankfully saw Andy on 'a bite a chuck' from some quality perch. As he said, "Wish I'd done it earlier." For whatever reason members invariably give this, the largest reservoir a miss, preferring either Arley or Adlington?

I managed to escape for an evening session on the Weaver Navigation on Tuesday and thankfully missed out on the rain which was forecast. Sport was on the slow side but my elderly maggots and groundbait/micro-pellet mix did attract a few skimmers, roach, gudgeon, and perch with one a decent specimen.

The Tom James Open Match on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river which was sluggish and definitely as are many of our fisheries in need of some rain. However, the conditions didn't deter Jeff Shaw who drew peg 64 and notched-up his first Mersey win of the season with a weight of 5-2-0. He fished maggot on both pole and bolo for a net of roach and perch with the 'stripeys' definitely in abundance and striking at fry in the margins throughout the match. Eddie Frangleton took second place from peg 70 with a similar catch of roach and perch for 4-13-0. Twenty-four anglers fished.

There is a Warrington Rowing Club rescheduled racing event being held downstream of Kingsway Bridge on Sunday 1st August so please avoid fishing this length. The Mersey Match Series on the same day has been moved back to the Mersey Walk area.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal pegged from Daresbury Labs along the short length back towards Moore. Jimmy Byrne put together a winning catch of roach and perch for a weight of 5-13-0. (This is the area that following the water main burst in early May this year saw anglers making gloomy predictions when countless gallons of chlorinated water flooded into the canal). Anyway, Jimmy fished the pole starting off on bread-punch but changed to maggot and caster to take a better stamp of fish. Stu Patterson took second place with 4-13-0 and included a bonus bream of around 3lbs in his catch. Sixteen anglers fished.

Thanks to the members who turned out to the working party at Grey Mist last week during the boiling hot weather which saw a lot of clearance work achieved….we can now get some long-awaited stone delivered.

Forthcoming Working Parties: Saturday 31st July 09-30 onwards Small Sandiway Lake and the following day Sunday 1st August 10-00 onwards Rixton Claypits. If you fancy doing your bit to help your club simply turn up to either, you will be more than welcome and will enjoy the craic.

20th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

During this hot weather lots of fisheries countrywide have seen swimmers arrive in numbers and aside from some causing damage and leaving large amounts of rubbish the sad thing is that some have lost their lives through drowning. Our hearts go out to their devastated families. However, members can help by ringing the police and reporting swimmers by either dialling 101 or 999. Please make the call and ask for an incident number.

Jason Phillips had a great evening's roach session on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green on Sunday. He started on the pole and maggot and fed a second swim regularly with a few grains of hemp. After catching half a dozen fish, he changed to his hemp swim and the float vanished on the first cast, from then on it was non-stop action. Jason ended up with about twenty-five roach with a good few around the pound mark.

I saw a video this week of roach being fed with bread opposite our Association owned Wide Hole fishery which really is a 'part' of the Macclesfield Canal. Judging by the number of feeding fish it is definitely worth a visit but please take a pair of disposable gloves with you and a bin-sack as it looks like poachers have been having a field day whilst our bailiff has been laid-up as a result of a car accident. Let me know how you fare.

Mike Pritchard sweated it out on the Mersey on his usual peg four during the scorching Saturday sunshine. He fished the waggler and started catching roach on maggot and later changed tactics feeding caster over hemp which attracted a better stamp of roach. He ended his session with fifty-eight fish, all roach except for a brace of perch and a skimmer bream. Mike reckoned that he had not used his landing net so much for ages.

The Dynamic duo Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt were on the river at Paddington Bank last week where ken caught thirty-eight perch to 1.5lbs fishing maggot in the margin. Dave tried a few methods; the feeder and maggot brought an eel and a couple of perch, a change to method feeder and micro-pellet brought another few perch plus a bream of 6-5-0 on a plastic worm. On the waggler in the margin he had a further nineteen perch to 1.5lbs. He commented, "All in all a great morning session and a big thankyou to the lads for clearing the pegs."

Our Briars Cup Open Match on Sunday was fished on one of the hottest days of the year along the Victoria Park stretch of the River Mersey. Jimmy Byrne was the comfortable winner with almost 3lbs to spare over second placed G Kennerly. Jimmy started on the tip with groundbait feeder with worm and caster which brought him five skimmer bream and a few perch for around 5lbs but when bites dried-up he changed tactics to pole and maggot that saw him add around thirty roach and perch for a total weight of 9-11-0. G. Kennerly weighed 6-15-0 taken on the tip which included a bream over 3lbs plus roach and perch. Twenty-one anglers fished.

The Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished again this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. It was hard going but local rod George 'The Breadman' Barber repeated his winning performance of the previous two weeks to achieve the treble for the first time in his life with 2-14-0 of small roach on his secret meat bait (if you believe that you will believe anything). It was definitely a George's day as G. Hollis from the next peg took second place with a similar roach net of 2-6-0. Fifteen fished.

Our friends at Warrington Rowing Club are holding a regatta on the Mersey downstream of Kingsway Bridge this weekend so better if members fish upstream of the bridge.

13th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Phil Brown fished a Sunday morning session at Grey Mist on Sunday when starting off with a method feeder he landed one tench and lost one. He changed over to float tactics and had a shed-full of quality roach to just over the pound mark plus tench all taken on corn. I reckon that not many anglers target the roach on this fishery.

Anthony Rough was back on the Dee this time at Shocklach where he reports lots of dace which just kept feeding, plus grayling, and perch. He commented, "A lovely few hours on the centre pin." Following a recent brief introduction to river fishing after a work party on our stretch of the Dee at Worthenbury I predicted that we had a new river convert in committee member Any Burrows when he landed his first chub. I wish I had put money on it for he was back up there on Sunday with the excuse of putting up a sign on the stile that we built, but just happened to have his tackle and some bread with him. Thanks Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed catching the dace and chub that you reckoned was even bigger than your two-litre flask.

Andy Corr pole-fished the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall on Sunday where he reported loads of fish topping but slow going. He ended up with a brace of bream plus roach and perch. The other end of the canal at Boothstown was entirely different with no fish showing during Stuart Simms drop-shotting session. But little wonder the silvers were keeping their heads down as he landed three perch to around 1.5lbs topped by a pike of over 10lbs.

Stuart Roberts had a go on our stretch of the Weaver Navigation last Thursday and despite the direction of flow changing he set up a stick-float to run through about a rod length out but had most of his fish at around 6 metres. He finished up with around 16lbs. The majority were bream, best 2lbs, plus a few roach, perch, and rudd, a single dace and a surprise small tench. I called up on Sunday to find Ian Green about to end his session a very happy man. I saw his cracking 30lbs plus net of bream, skimmers, roach, rudd, and perch all caught using the tried and tested method of pole-fished maggot and caster with groundbait at around 10metres. A few pegs away I caught up with a blast from the past Tony Allen who thirty plus years ago ran the fishing shop in Gainsborough Road, Warrington with his brother Brian. He had been experimenting with different methods but still had around 10lbs of fish.

Our Mersey Match Series on Sunday was fished on the Mersey Walk stretch of the river and for the first time this season only an ounce separated the first two anglers but saw Ade Green take the winner's purse with a weight of 11lbs exactly. He started off on feeder and worm tactics and landed a bonus bream of 6.5lbs and half a dozen skimmers, but snapped off on a decent fish. He added a few roach when things went quiet and he swapped over to pole and maggot. Eddie Frangleton took second place with only two fish, but they were bream taken on feeder and worm which sent the scales needle round to 10-15-0. Twenty-six fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. It was hard going but local rod George 'The Breadman' Barber repeated his winning performance of the previous week with 3lbs exactly made up of small roach on his secret bait. Rumour has it that he is sponsored by Warburtons. Terry Dunn was the runner-up with 2-14-0 of bream and small roach. Seventeen fished.

Working parties this week: Sunday 12noon Moore Quarry. Tuesday Grey Mist 10am. All welcome.

6th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th July 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Colin Wood has enjoyed some good bream catches these past few weeks or so from Worthington Reservoirs but on Friday fishing on Arley (number 2) but the bream didn't show and although he had a few skimmers he couldn't avoid the perch. Surprisingly all were caught on sweetcorn.

Dave Gardner and his mate Ken Hewitt were at Woodshaw Reservoir on Friday last where they enjoyed their four-hour session; Ken struck into the perch catching nineteen to 14ozs plus a solitary roach on pole and maggot whilst Dave's first bite using waggler and double maggot saw him slide his landing net under a 2lbs crucian. This was followed by twenty-three perch in the 6 to 8oz range, plus half a dozen roach, best over a pound.

The 'one man band' aka anonymous volunteer who has worked throughout the close season improving pegs and access at the Weaver Navigation managed an early morning pole session on the venue this week. Fishing the usual balled-in groundbait and maggot tactics he ended his session with thirty bream and lost what he described as a monster perch at the net after a twenty-minute fight. As I reported last week the dredging operation on the far side of the swing bridge seems to have had no effect.

Neil Plunkett fished at Grey Mist on Friday where following a weed rake session he was soon into a perch fest, at least forty of them, best around a pound. He added a solitary roach plus a tench around the 2lbs mark. He caught on both waggler or groundbait feeder and maggot.

The track to our Worthenbury stretch of the Dee may be rough but for those having the patience to navigate it slowly and eventually climb the five barred gate the rewards are great. Committee members Jay Makin, Andy Burrows, and I met there on Thursday when with permission from the landowner we grafted for the better part of the day clearing vegetation and building a stile from scratch to eliminate the rickety gate climb. We had each brought a small amount of tackle and decided to take advantage of the meandering river and its fantastic surroundings. Andy had brought some bread, myself some two-week old maggots which I shared with Jay. In just over an hour fishing, we all caught, Jay and myself a few dace and small chub, but Andy on his very first river session landed a decent chub after a few casts on his trotted bread flake (now a convert already talking about his next visit). On our arrival there was already a member fishing, Stuart Roberts, who ended his session with a cracking net of chub to between 4 – 5lbs, plus a few grayling and dace. He fished the stick-float and maggot and added a few fish on caster. Anthony Rough was at the venue on Sunday where fishing waggler and double maggot and keeping mobile he caught a couple of decent chub, a few grayling, a trout, plus loads of chublets. The river was alive with fish!

Our Sid Jones Open Mersey Match on Sunday fished on the Victoria Park stretch of the river wasn't quite a bream or bust affair and saw Ray Boden the winner with a roach and perch net taken on pole and maggot which gave him a 5lbs margin over second placed Ade Green. Ray's catch weighed in at 15-2-0 and Ade's 9-15-0 made up of a bonus bream taken on groundbait feeder and maggot plus roach and perch on the pole. Twenty-four fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week at Preston Brook and saw local rod George 'The Breadman' Barber the winner with 3-9-0 of roach taken on pole and you know what. Ron Durr was the runner-up with 3-3-0 taken on the same tactics. Seventeen fished.

Many thanks to those members who volunteered their services at last weeks Working party at Rixton. Others are planned so watch this space.

Please note there is a working party organised at Sandiway on Saturday 10th July starting at 9am. If you fancy helping simply turn up and you will be made very welcome.
