27th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

This week Adam Barlow and his son Oliver 8years fished a session at the Mount, Buckley where the youngster hit the jackpot with a perch of 1-8-0 which took double red maggot float-fished a rod length from the bank. There wasn't a lot happening but the keen youngster sat there all day with his feet in the water float fishing and when he hooked it his dad thought he'd snagged the bottom due to the bend it put in his light float rod. Nice one Oliver.

Steve Ossett found the Mount roach in a feeding mood on Friday in this popular mixed fishery where specimens can go over the magical 2lbs. He fished maggot and feeder tactics for a 20lbs bag which included a few perch.

Craig Lynskey took his son Alfie aged 14years to Rixton Claypits on Sunday and after seeing signs of shoals of bream but no visible carp he baited with 6mm SCOPEX squid pellets in mesh balls with a scattering of 15 mm flavoured boilies and a 12mm SCOPEX pop up at the business end. No carp but Alfie was more than happy with a 5lb 1oz tench he landed. They are planning their next adventures to Appleton Reservoir and Small Sandiway.

Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt were at Woodshaw Reservoir on Wednesday, Ken caught five Perch biggest about 8oz and four roach 4 to 6 oz. on pole and maggot. Dave had a cracking session starting with a 3.5lbs bream on ledgered pellet, four roach, biggest 12oz, five perch with two touching 1.5lb, and one small chub. The pair enjoyed a morning session on Tuesday at Statham Pool where they both started on the tip but with nothing happening changed to pole and maggot. Ken managed a 12oz roach plus two tench. Dave had 18 roach to just under a pound, 3 perch, and a bream just over 2lb. They reckoned that despite the muddy banks its still a smashing fishery.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's event was held on the Bridgewater Canal at the Tramps Grave saw a new winner when during his second only match with WAA Terry Dunn defeated the experts. He may have only had three fish but his method worked on the day when he put two bream and one perch in the weigh-net sending the scale pointer to 6lbs dead. His two chunky bream fell to large bread punch and a change to worm added the perch. George Barber aka The Breadman was second with a roach catch boosted by a bonus 2lbs bream all taken on the 'white stuff' for 4-4-0. Twenty anglers turned out.

Last week Dave Saunders enjoyed a two-hour afternoon fly-fishing session on the Vyrnwy at Llanymynech. The water was crystal clear and a bit low, but hardly surprising with the recent dry spell. He managed a brown trout and a couple of salmon par but will be out again this week, so best of luck Dave.

Please note that any members wishing to fish the River Dee at Worthenbury that the track is rough and the style entry to our stretch has vanished along with a large section of bank during the floods. At present until we either erect a new style or have a padlock fitted to the adjacent farmers field gate a climb over it is the only option.

20th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last week Craig Lynskey enjoyed his best session so far at Appleton
Reservoir. He fished in the trees now colloquially known as the swamp
on Tuesday night to land his new personal best mirror carp at weighing
17-10-0 followed by another mirror carp two hours later a couple of
pounds lighter at 15-2-0. Two cracking fish and a very happy member.

Ian Sangster fished a short feeder session on the reservoir on Monday
and reckoned that although he forgot his keepnet he had over
twenty-five roach with some around the 12ounce mark all taken on
double red maggot.

Statham Pool where sport has been pretty quiet so far this year has
now started to wake-up with our bailiff reporting decent roach catches
and the occasional bream. Lots off carp cruising on the surface near
the inflow.

Last week Andy Corr enjoyed a cracking roach session on the
Bridgewater Canal at Lymm despite a Suez Canal stye blockage when a
barge that had become adrift lodged itself bank to bank. Andy even
managed a small jack-pike. Anthony Rough also enjoyed his early
morning trip to the Bridgewater at Delph Lane on Sunday where along
with plenty of bites and a few nice roach he had a crazy heron to
contend with that took a good roach as he was netting it. As Anthony
commented, "That was a first for me."

This week our Disabled & Over 60's match was held on the Bridgewater
Canal at the rear of Daresbury Labs and saw Stuart Patterson the
winner when his roach catch was boosted by a 4lbs beam which took a
single pinkie boosting his overall weight to 4-11-0. Ray Boden helped
by a foul-hooked bream of a couple of pounds which when added to his
roach and gudgeon net gave him second place with 4-3-0. Twenty-one
anglers turned out.

I hate having to mention litter as anyone who leaves it, angler or
otherwise disgusts me. Our rule 28 clearly states:- Any member fishing
with litter in their immediate vicinity will be held responsible. All
litter must be taken home. This means that you do not stuff it inside
the nearest public bin. Members agree on joining Warrington Anglers
Association to abide by the rules so please read them as ignorance is
no excuse.

Please note that following a change of ownership we now do not have
the fishing rights anywhere above the A56 at Mickle Trafford which
includes the stretch at Plemstall Church.

Members, please note that all bookings for night sessions must be
carried out strictly between 9am and 6pm by text only to the night
permit number. Any sent outside of these times will be ignored. Also,
anyone not tuning up after booking will face a month suspension from
night sessions as they are potentially depriving fellow members of the
opportunity to fish.

13th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Peter Lee fished Grey Mist Mere for the first time the weekend before
last where at 1.05am his snow man boilie rig presented over a PVA bag
full of various size pellets and crushed boilie fished tight to the
margin reed bed produced a run resulting in his first fish from the
venue in the shape of a 25-2-0 mirror carp. Thanks for sharing your
catch which I hope is the first of many.

It is not often that I get reports from the Macclesfield Canal but on
Sunday Ian Richards reports having an enjoyable afternoon roach
session at Scholar Lane. Having forgotten to pick up any maggots it
was down to the contents of the breadbin, liquidised bread and punch
as the only option. He wasn't expecting much but within ten minutes
using a small punch he was into his first roach. Ian ended up with a
couple of dozen roach.

This week Mike Pritchard was back for another Saturday visit to the
small but prolific Statham Pool where fishing a light waggler he
started his session on maggot and pinkie. He tried the last hour on
caster which resulted in a few 8oz roach. He caught thirty plus roach,
hybrids, and surprisingly a dace. Other anglers have reportedly also
enjoyed some fair sport with roach, but no bream.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's match was held on the Bridgewater
Canal at Delph Lane and saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne the winner
with a net of around seventy small roach and a few gudgeon for 4-1-0.
Pole, pinkie, and bread punch was the method of choice. Ray Bowden was
the runner-up using the same with 3-5-0. Eighteen anglers turned out.

There is a work-party improving/repairing pegs at Phoenix Park Lake on
both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning this weekend. Members
should avoid using pegs opposite the island on the canal side of the
venue where the work will be taking place.

6th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th April 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Colin Wood had a cracking catch of quality roach from Worthington
Lakes (Arley) last Wednesday where ignoring the usual lake tactics of
feeder used by the majority of anglers on this fishery he bucked the
trend fishing his session with a slider at 25yds using both red and
white maggots.

I managed to escape my laptop and phone for a couple of hours on
Thursday which I spent at Grey Mist checking cards and enjoying
chatting to members. Some had caught the odd tench and one angler had
managed five of the beauties on red maggot. Ade Green was back again
on Easter Monday determined to better his recent visit and was
rewarded with a tench twosome of 6-14-0 and 7-10-0, the later just
2ozs light of his PB. He was using a groundbait feeder with
hair-rigged fake red corn and red maggot. Another member landed a
mirror of 20lbs during the same session.

This week Mike Pritchard changed his allegiance from the Bridgewater
Canal where he normally fishes his Saturday sessions to Statham Pool.
He caught bream, hybrids, and roach mainly on waggler and red maggot,
a few on pinkie, but fish showed little interest in casters. There
were larger fish cruising the surface but showed no interest.

Peter Lang caught his roach during a recent session on the Bridgewater
Canal with a different tactic, fly- fishing. Also fly-fishing but on
the River Alyn for trout on Sunday saw Ian Doyle with a decent catch
of grayling which evidently didn't realise that they were out of
season. There has been a lot of riverside tree-work carried out
recently but the fishing doesn't seem to have been impacted and his
session was even more enhanced by the presence of kingfishers,
dippers, wrens, and mallards.

Our bailiff team at Wigan report that the fishing at Mowpin is average
for this time of the year for crucians, rudd, and the occasional carp.
On D & C a few chub have been showing up recently in catches but good
sport for silvers.

On Easter Monday our Disabled & Over 60's match was on our Woodshaw
Reservoir fishery and didn't start off too well when five minutes
before all-in it was sleeting and snowing. But it cleared up and
sixteen anglers fished despite the chilly conditions which saw veteran
match-man Neil Buist aka The Engine the winner with 4-14-0. He caught
a brace of crucians plus roach using both feeder and pole with maggot
on the hook. George Hollis took second place with a weight of 4lbs
exactly made up of half a dozen roach plus two bonus crucians caught
thirty minutes before all-out; all on pole at 10metres and maggot.
