9th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

For a brief period of an hour and a half on Thursday committee member
Ade Green changed his role to tutor when he introduced Heidi O'Gorman
aged ten to our wonderful sport of angling. The Bridgewater Canal at
Houghs Bridge was the chosen venue for Heidi's first angling
experience where many other youngsters over countless decades have
gone before. The chosen tactics were short pole and pinkie and
despite the canal not fishing too well at present Heidi caught her
very first fish, a small perch which will be undoubtedly engrained in
her memory forever and the first of many future catches.

After posting out Tuesdays mail Lynda and I made a detour to Appleton
Reservoir to check on the state of the car park. Yes, it needs more
work but there is enough room for members to park until completion. As
we were leaving this popular venue I came across Greg Westbrook and
his son Adam who informed me that they had managed a carp apiece.
Using Greg's homemade secret boilies they weighed 15-6-0 and 20-4-0
the later claimed by Adam.

Paul Bibby took me back a good number of decades when he emailed me
his first attempts at 'drop shorting' aged eight in Orford Park pond.
Method:- A garden cane. Length of cotton to exact depth. Tie a button
on the bottom, this is your weight. Bait some blood worm from Orford
Farm duck pond. Tie two or three to the cotton. Lift up and down until
you get a Jackie. If you caught a Red-Throat you were the king of the
Pond!

Lukasz Procek who organises our small but select group of volunteers
who carry out fishery improvement work and essential repairs at
Phoenix Park Lake was out on one of his 'inspection tours' on Friday
when he watched two young members landing pike. After their first fish
they moved one peg and straight away caught another pike. Both fish
were about 3 to 4lb and decidedly better than a blank. Living close by
he decided to grab his rods and set up for both carp and roach. He had
one run on the carp rod but the fish managed to slip the hook.
Nevertheless, still an enjoyable few hours.

Mike Pritchard had a short session on the Bridgewater Canal on
Saturday at Grappenhall where fishing pinkie across under the ivy he
caught thirty small roach. It seems that there has been an explosion
of small roach which have over-wintered safely and hopefully will grow
on to a decent size.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains
closed on Friday evenings until further notice. Members can simply
post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with
their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door
where mail is collected and dealt with most days. Alternatively, you
can post to Warrington Anglers Association PO. Box 71, Warrington WA1
1LR where mail is collected weekly.

You can still renew memberships along with your night permit online
from our Warrington Anglers Association website. It works a treat on
mobile, tablet, or laptop. You must use the required numbers from both
your postcode and membership number as printed on your booklet address
label. Most tackle shops advertised in your membership book are open
for click & collect.

I would really appreciate members to send me any of your pics,
reports, or stories as at this time of the year there is not a lot
happening, so good, bad, or indifferent they may help fellow members
to plan any trips to the bankside. Email
frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
