30th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Amber James aged five years accompanied by dad Martin enjoyed a short
session at Ackers Pit on Sunday. Where using a 5metre pole and fishing
a large bread-punch offering her patience was rewarded with a nice
sized bream. Well done Amber.

Sunday also saw two other young members, Marley and Leon Preston
accompanied by dad Mark enjoy a four-hour tench session at Grey Mist
Mere where the family had eleven bites between them and landed six
fish. These were the first tench ever caught by Marley and Leon all
caught on maggot feeder with red maggot on the hook; the session was
only cut short when they ran out of maggots. I'm certain that Marley
and Leon will always remember this their first tench catch.

Last week thanks to Apem Ltd a good mix of twenty-eight double figure
carp were stocked into Phoenix Park Lake along with 1700 mixed roach
and perch, the latter included quite a number over the pound mark and
a few around 2lbs. From there following a positive result on the
dissolved oxygen levels at our High Legh fishery the team stocked a
similar roach and perch mix of approximately 1500 fish at this venue.
This is still closed but hopefully it will be re-opened soon to
members again.

Simon Jones targeted the bream at The Mount on Saturday where he
managed to land six to around 4lbs fishing a groundbait feeder and
double maggot. He also had a netful of cracking roach to 1.5lbs. Ian
Rogers reports catching three carp, best a mirror of just over 17lbs
on homemade boilies.

On Friday committee member Mike Dench enjoyed some great roach sport
at Appleton Reservoir. He fished a groundbait feeder and red maggot
for a net of around 12lbs plus.

On Monday the first Disabled & Over 60's match since the second
Covid-19 lockdown took place on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton. Only
fourteen anglers attended but I am sure the numbers will go up as we
head towards summer. Ron Durr was the winner with 3-3-0 of roach and a
single skimmer taken on the pole alternating between bread and pinkie.
Match organiser Jimmy Byrne took second place with 3-1-0 using the
same tactics.

Despite the small turnout for the working party at Sandiway Small lake
on Saturday some essential peg improvements were made. Thanks guys.
There will be more opportunities in the near future for anyone who
missed out on this occasion.

The Bridgewater Canal seems to be producing lots of small roach,
although sport is still patchy. Dave Shaw put together a catch of
thirty roach on Tuesday taken on maggot and pinkie on the pole at 2.5
to 3metres. Others in the area struggled. A few pike still showing but
mainly jacks plus a few perch.

This past week carp have been almost conspicuous by their absence at
Appleton Reservoir with just the odd one reported. However, the roach
have been feeding really well with Andy Wilkinson on Thursday having a
catch of 15 to 20lbs taken in four hours on quiver-tipped red maggot
with a few better fish on corn. Another member enjoyed a similar catch
the same day.

Ade Green struggled at Grey mist on Sunday but his persistence paid
off when he landed a male tench of 6-5-0 taken on a running feeder rig
with two hair rigged fake red maggots. The following day rumour has it
that three of our bailiffs fished the Mist from the Ruler peg and hit
the jackpot with tench, one of them even managing to catch an 18.5lbs
carp on his first cast.

Both Matches and night fishing are allowed from Monday 29th March 2021
subject to the ongoing Covid-19 advice, social distancing,
anti-backing hands and locks to our car parks after use. Let us hope
that all members are aware of their responsibility to others. Bookings
for night fishing will be available strictly between 9am and 6pm from
Friday 26th March 2021 by text only. Full details of night fishing and
match fishing will be posted on our website and Facebook page.

Although High Legh Fishery remains closed at the moment the good news
is that the oxygen levels are now back to normal although more work is
required before it reopens. Hopefully this week there will be an
interim stocking of roach and perch. More stocking reports in next
week's column.

Please park sensibly on our re-stoned car park at Appleton Reservoir
to maximise the use of the full area for the benefit of other members.
In other words, park like a professional and not like the
inconsiderate driver who parked his white car in front of our gateway
at Rixton Claypits on Tuesday blocking in a member. Thanks to everyone
who turned out this week to ensure the car park was finished before
the parking restrictions come into force on Friday 26th March 2021.

Andrew Sangam enjoyed four daily sessions on Worthington Lakes fishing
at Adlington (No.3) before this smaller of the three fisheries closed
for three months on Sunday 14th March as this operates a close-season
opening again on 16th June. The total catch from his sessions was
eight carp and two bream taken on garlic grill pop-ups with the best
day resulting in five carp and the biggest a common weighing 18-11-0.

Jade Webb aka 'Ninja B' sent me some information regarding her brother
Jack's catch from Grey Mist Mere on Friday of a 25lb mirror carp. Jack
Webb had used essential cell wafter topped with fake corn and PVA
mesh. As the time he had available was short he completed the
baiting-up, hooking, and landing in the space of sixty minutes! Not
only that but the week previous Jack landed a carp from Ackers Pit
within the same time scale. The question is what would be the outcome
of a five-hour session?

Good news from Angling Trust is that from 29th March 2021 with the
easing of Government Covid-19 restrictions match fishing and night
fishing can resume. Night bookings can be taken from 9am to 6pm by
text only on 26th March. All updates and any restrictions will be
posted on the Warrington Anglers Association Facebook group page and
our website.

There is another working party for essential maintenance (tidying
pegs) at Sandiway Small Lake this Saturday 20th March 2021. Meet at
the lake at 9am when volunteers must book in with Matt Akery on
arrival in order that he is aware of those attending. The areas where
the work is taking place will be closed during the day from 9am to 3pm
to all who are not involved in the working party. This is for the
benefit of all members so I would ask that all members cooperate.
Please note reasonable travel is allowed by volunteers for such tasks
and the usual Covid-19 restrictions, social distancing, etc must be
observed.

Our volunteers have been working this week clearing overgrown and
self-seeded saplings from our Appleton Reservoir car park. The top has
been scraped down to base stone with crush & run limestone hopefully
being spread and rolled on Thursday. When this work has been completed
there should be room for at least sixteen vehicles, possibly more so
there will be zero tolerance to members parking anywhere but within
the car park which is annoying to local residents. Thanks to a member
on Tuesday who helped by moving his van numerous times, He didn't
catch but it was a glorious day to be fishing and as he said, better
than work!

9th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th March 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

For a brief period of an hour and a half on Thursday committee member
Ade Green changed his role to tutor when he introduced Heidi O'Gorman
aged ten to our wonderful sport of angling. The Bridgewater Canal at
Houghs Bridge was the chosen venue for Heidi's first angling
experience where many other youngsters over countless decades have
gone before. The chosen tactics were short pole and pinkie and
despite the canal not fishing too well at present Heidi caught her
very first fish, a small perch which will be undoubtedly engrained in
her memory forever and the first of many future catches.

After posting out Tuesdays mail Lynda and I made a detour to Appleton
Reservoir to check on the state of the car park. Yes, it needs more
work but there is enough room for members to park until completion. As
we were leaving this popular venue I came across Greg Westbrook and
his son Adam who informed me that they had managed a carp apiece.
Using Greg's homemade secret boilies they weighed 15-6-0 and 20-4-0
the later claimed by Adam.

Paul Bibby took me back a good number of decades when he emailed me
his first attempts at 'drop shorting' aged eight in Orford Park pond.
Method:- A garden cane. Length of cotton to exact depth. Tie a button
on the bottom, this is your weight. Bait some blood worm from Orford
Farm duck pond. Tie two or three to the cotton. Lift up and down until
you get a Jackie. If you caught a Red-Throat you were the king of the
Pond!

Lukasz Procek who organises our small but select group of volunteers
who carry out fishery improvement work and essential repairs at
Phoenix Park Lake was out on one of his 'inspection tours' on Friday
when he watched two young members landing pike. After their first fish
they moved one peg and straight away caught another pike. Both fish
were about 3 to 4lb and decidedly better than a blank. Living close by
he decided to grab his rods and set up for both carp and roach. He had
one run on the carp rod but the fish managed to slip the hook.
Nevertheless, still an enjoyable few hours.

Mike Pritchard had a short session on the Bridgewater Canal on
Saturday at Grappenhall where fishing pinkie across under the ivy he
caught thirty small roach. It seems that there has been an explosion
of small roach which have over-wintered safely and hopefully will grow
on to a decent size.

Neil Plunkett managed a well-earned break on Monday from his hectic
schedule and decided try his luck at Rixton Claypits. He wasn't
expecting anything spectacular but managed to spot some shoaling fish
and it was game on. He fished small cage feeder with fine ground bait
and a few maggots, size 16 hook baited with double red maggot. It was
obvious after a while that the fish were not exactly ravenous and
needed to drop it on their noses for any chance of a bite. The final
outcome was three tench 3 to 4lb apiece.

Despite the flooded conditions Nathan Blythin enjoyed a session at The
Mount fishery on Sunday and ended up with half a dozen carp, the
biggest at 18lb. Roach are showing on the car park peg but wellies are
essential…..preferably thigh waders😊

The sunny weather on Friday tempted committee member Ade Green out for
a session on the Mersey where Lynda and I found him staring at a
motionless tip. But we must have brought him luck as he caught a small
roach within a few minutes. He had 18 small roach in total on red
maggot and a change towards the end to worm saw him strike into a
decent fish but the adrenalin rush was short lived as the hook pulled
out. Never mind Ade it was a lovely day and you were on the bank
enjoying your sport.

We have removed the upstream area of the River Gowy from our online
maps as ownership has changed and the new owners wish to have animals
on their land but no anglers. Following discussions with them we must
respect their decision. Members now must not fish upstream of the A56
bridge.

group, or contact me with their details.
