14th July 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
A morning session at Appleton Reservoir produced these two beauties for Stephen Rogers and his son Mason aged nine years. Although Mason didn't catch, he did help his dad by netting the fifteen pounder. I predict that this keen young angler will feature in my blog/ Guardian Column again in the very near future. Watch this space. The mirrors weighed in at 23-5-0 and 15-4-0.
Simon Oldfield also had a cracking roach session at 'The Res' this evening where over the course of three hours he managed thirty-three roach to over a pound all on single corn hook-bait. He used a block-end feeder at about thirty yards with 'roach noire' and brown crumb groundbait with corn and small pellets.
Neil Plunkett ended up fishing three Warrington waters this past week. The first venue was the Ribble as the river was fining down after the last downpour when he fished a feeder with corn or pellet and had ten nice roach a couple over a pound, plus his first Ribble Barbel 4-5 lbs and a feisty chub that nearly pulled the rod in and must have been over 4lbs. The following day it was the turn of Rixton where five quality bream fought surprisingly hard on corn fished in a method feeder with micro pellets along with some roach and perch on a waggler with maggot. The final session was at Grey Mist where Neil managed at least thirty perch, with a handful nudging the pound mark. He reckoned that it was his best perch haul in years. All on groundbait hemp and maggot in a small cage feeder with maggot on a size 16.
Alan Campbell in his own words 'had a fun day on the Mist on Sunday' where he went with all intention of tench fishing. It wasn't to be as the tincas avoided him as Alan spent all day pulling out perch, but still a great day's sport with some decent sized stripeys and a little jack-pike that took his worm offering.
By contrast Anton Brewer on the same fishery commented, "By far the best tench fishery I have ever fished." This was borne out by the fact that he had broken his PB four times over two short sessions this past week. Best, 8-8-0
Ste Hirst had a good bream session at Rixton on Saturday when he took a rest from his usual match fishing. He lost a good fish which took him by surprise within seconds of casting in which was more than likely a carp or quality tench. A quick drag adjustment and his method feeder with corn on the hook soon started to produce bream. As Ste stated, A stunning place and a very enjoyable day.
On Wednesday Fred Fouracre reported a good session on Arley which is part of the Worthington lakes complex. Nothing over 4lbs but the bream provided non-stop action. A few carp also reported.
Don't forget the Mount at Buckley is now open to all members as the welsh travel restrictions were lifted from last Monday. I was up there myself on Monday, although sadly not fishing but members I spoke with on my 'rounds' had all caught carp, nothing big but good sport. Our bailiff Brian Jones has been having some good catches of quality roach on the feeder where specimens can top the magical two pond mark.
Our Sunday Mersey Series this week took place at Kingsway allotments and saw John Green the winner with 10-11-0 where he caught on the pole but after snagging up a number of times he eventually changed to the tip and groundbait feeder which brought three positive bites but only one bream made it to the net but it was enough. Second placed Ray Boden fished the pole and maggot throughout for a weight of 10-2-0.
Twenty anglers turned out again for our Disabled and Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal near Daresbury Laboratories. Ron Durr took first place with 4-10-10 made up of a few tiny roach with a bonus bream of 4lbs. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne took second place 4-4-0 made up entirely of small roach.
Both new and existing members really need to read their membership books so that they are in no doubt about the rules and member obligations of our club. For example, litter which no member ever leaves and is an impossibility if they adhere to the directive 'Remove all litter from their peg area and take it home.' Another rule which ensures clean fisheries is 'No disposable barbeques, single use bottles or cans/tins are allowed on our fisheries.' End result is much cleaner fisheries.
WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street remain closed on Friday evenings until further notice. Members renewing can simply put their book in an envelope with their payment, a stamped addressed envelope, and post through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with daily.
