28th July 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th July 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

This week in over three decades I have been writing this column we have what I think is our youngest angler to feature here. I thought that I started my daughter off early at the age of three but Kelly Louise Sloan took her son Noah to Ackers Pit on Thursday for a short introduction to our beloved sport of angling where with a little help from his mummy he landed his first carp. Oh, I forgot to mention Noah is only two years of age. Another angler for life.

On Friday Scott Robert took his dad, Ken for a session on the River Ribble at Hurst Green where they agreed on a little competition before they set-up on the bankside. From the off Ken took the lead which as he normally won was not unexpected and after the first hour it was ten roach and chub against Scott's two. The end result however went for once to Scott with thirty roach plus chub and gudgeon against his dad's mid-twenty catch. Having tried pellets and meat which only attracted eels all were taken using feeder tactics just over halfway across on either red or white maggots. Scott also won the uphill challenge to the carpark which is hardly surprising as Ken like myself is a septuagenarian.

Matthew Sherratt celebrated his twenty-fifth birthday on Monday with an overnight session on the Mount at Buckley with friend Jack Webb and young brother Dominic Bramham. Matthew was happy with the biggest fish of 17-4-0 plus fourteen others so he was kept busy finally shipping in his rods for some sleep at 0430 hours. They each had the same number of fish with a couple of occasions carp on both rods, all taken on 10mm booster pop-ups fished over a bed of corn and hemp.

Mike Pritchard fished the River Mersey on Saturday setting up on peg three using his newly rejuvenated waggler rod which he broke a few weeks ago on a previous session. Mike started off with maggot but later changed over to caster to catch a better stamp of fish. He ended up with some cracking dace which are showing up in good numbers this season, roach, skimmers, and he lost a big fish at the net. As usual he enjoyed his weekly 'fishing fix'.

Ian Simcock enjoyed his first river session of the 2020 coarse fishing season on Sunday when he visited the Dee at Worthenbury. He set-up a stick-float with a 16's hook and double maggot and after ten minutes landed a small chub. This was followed by six others, best about a pound, then the dace moved in which kept him busy until he ran out of maggots. Tony Baron had a similar session on Tuesday with chub, a few grayling, and plenty of dace.

The Tom James Open fished on the Mersey this Sunday at Victoria Park saw winner Geoff Shaw draw hot peg 31 where he fished bolognese and maggot throughout the match to catch quality roach for a weight of 11-1-0. Match organiser Ade Green fished both pole and feeder tactics for a mixed net of hybrids, dace, plus a bonus 4lbs bream that gave him second place with 9-14-0. Twenty-one anglers fished and with a fair few backing weights of 7 and 8lbs plus it was another close match.

Despite the weather there was a good turnout for our Disabled and Over 60's match this week which was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. It was a joint first for Roy Brown and George Hollis with both weighing 3-2-0. Roy's net was made up of roach and perch and George's the same but he added a bonus 1.5 lbs skimmer.

This is vitally important to all members that they object to the Outline Planning Application Number 20/00337/OUTEIA which has been submitted to Halton Council for residential development at Daresbury. This includes a proposed closure of Red Brow Lane, Daresbury, which has been used for decades by our members for access by motor vehicle to fish the Bridgewater Canal at Red Brow Underbridge. Save your fishing…object now.

Thanks to Halton Council there will be a weed removal boat employed on the Sankey St Helens Canal either side of Carterhouse Bridge starting on Monday 3rd August 2020.

There will be a work party on Grey Mist on Wednesday 5th August 2020 starting 'early doors' until lunchtime. Any members who have a few hours to spare will be more than welcome.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street remain closed on Friday evenings until further notice. Members renewing can simply put their book or request in an envelope with their payment, a stamped addressed envelope, and post it through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. If you need any further information please give me a call or email as below.

Please keep those catch reports coming; they are all very much appreciated by fellow members. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

This is vitally important to all members that they object to the Outline Planning Application Number 20/00337/OUTEIA which has been submitted to Halton Council for residential development at Daresbury. This includes a proposed closure of Red Brow Lane, Daresbury, which has been used by our members for access by motor vehicle to fish the Bridgewater Canal at Red Brow Underbridge for countless years, I have used it for almost sixty. Eleven-year-old Dominic Bramham who has been fishing with his brother Matthew Sherratt since the age of four christened his new Warrington Anglers Licence with a trip to Appleton Reservoir on Saturday. This was his first time on a large fishery and for starters topped his previous PB carp with a fish of exactly 17lbs taken on a pink boosted pop-up next to the weed in the margin. Later he did it again with a fish of 18-6-0. Not to be outdone Matthew just topped it with a carp of 18-12-0. Great days fishing and some memorable pics for the future. Thank you both for sharing your catches.

Simon Oldfield was more than happy his roach catch on Tuesday evening from the Res. Where in three and a half hours fishing a 4metre whip to hand he ended up with a hundred and ten silvers in the net weighing in at 31-14-0. Two pints of caster one and a half of hemp did the trick with a single caster the best but a few fish on tares.

Lee Verity landed a stunning looking mirror from Big Sandiway last week which weighed in at 36lbs allegedly caught on corn😊 You never know, that's what the man said. Well done Lee.

And another stunner, this time the big grass carp from Grey Mist caught on Tuesday morning at a new weight 28-8-0 by a mystery angler. Next time a thirty?

Stuart Peters had an enjoyable night session on the River Ribble where his first cast saw him slide a chub into the net followed by a couple of small barbel and one of 9-6-0. He lost a much larger fish but he will be back with his target one of the big doubles. And another catch from the Ribble but a totally different approach when on Monday Daniel Stewart fished with a little Fox Rage lure to land a chub and a pike. Our sport offers so many options.

Garry Currell aged sixty-two  fished the River Mersey on Tuesday for the first time in his life and it turned out was one of the most enjoyable three hours fishing he had for some time. Fishing peg 3 above the weir at Victoria Park he trotted a 3BB waggler, size 18 barbless, and fed bronze maggot with red ones on the hook.  He catch included roach with the best brace around the 1lb mark, hybrids, skimmers, perch, and the last fish of the session a dace. He commented, "Wish I had listened and believed reports that the fishing was this good on the river some years ago."

At last I managed couple of short trips to the Weaver Navigation since last week's column where although sport wasn't as 'hot' as it can be, I managed an all skimmer catch fishing the pole with double red maggot over balls of groundbait laced with micro-pellets and maggot. A couple of hours on Monday this week was entirely different, not a single bream, only perch and roach. Ted Small really enjoyed his first visit to the venue on Tuesday where fishing a waggler in a strong downstream wind made the presentation a bit tricky. He ended up with fourteen fish, a mixture of roach, perch, gudgeon, and skimmers, best about 12oz.

The Briars Cup Open fished on the Mersey this Sunday was a really close match with Bob Campbell making the most of an end peg draw to win with 11-2-0 made up of roach, skimmers, and a few dace. Bob fished bolognaise and maggot. Second place went to Derek Bibby from the adjacent peg who fished pole and maggot and was only 4oz adrift with a weight of 10-4-0. Twenty-six anglers fished.

The usual twenty anglers turned out again for our Disabled and Over 60's match this week fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge. Bas Chambers took first place with 6-2-0 mainly roach, perch, and small skimmers taken on maggot and pinkie. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was less than 2oz behind when he took second place with 6-0-2 with a similar net of fish.

14th July 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th July 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A morning session at Appleton Reservoir produced these two beauties for Stephen Rogers and his son Mason aged nine years. Although Mason didn't catch, he did help his dad by netting the fifteen pounder. I predict that this keen young angler will feature in my blog/ Guardian Column again in the very near future. Watch this space. The mirrors weighed in at 23-5-0 and 15-4-0.

Simon Oldfield also had a cracking roach session at 'The Res' this evening where over the course of three hours he managed thirty-three roach to over a pound all on single corn hook-bait. He used a block-end feeder at about thirty yards with 'roach noire' and brown crumb groundbait with corn and small pellets.

Neil Plunkett ended up fishing three Warrington waters this past week. The first venue was the Ribble as the river was fining down after the last downpour when he fished a feeder with corn or pellet and had ten nice roach a couple over a pound, plus his first Ribble Barbel 4-5 lbs and a feisty chub that nearly pulled the rod in and must have been over 4lbs. The following day it was the turn of Rixton where five quality bream fought surprisingly hard on corn fished in a method feeder with micro pellets along with some roach and perch on a waggler with maggot. The final session was at Grey Mist where Neil managed at least thirty perch, with a handful nudging the pound mark. He reckoned that it was his best perch haul in years.  All on groundbait hemp and maggot in a small cage feeder with maggot on a size 16.

Alan Campbell in his own words 'had a fun day on the Mist on Sunday' where he went with all intention of tench fishing. It wasn't to be as the tincas avoided him as Alan spent all day pulling out perch, but still a great day's sport with some decent sized stripeys and a little jack-pike that took his worm offering.

By contrast Anton Brewer on the same fishery commented, "By far the best tench fishery I have ever fished." This was borne out by the fact that he had broken his PB four times over two short sessions this past week. Best, 8-8-0

Ste Hirst had a good bream session at Rixton on Saturday when he took a rest from his usual match fishing. He lost a good fish which took him by surprise within seconds of casting in which was more than likely a carp or quality tench. A quick drag adjustment and his method feeder with corn on the hook soon started to produce bream.  As Ste stated, A stunning place and a very enjoyable day.

On Wednesday Fred Fouracre reported a good session on Arley which is part of the Worthington lakes complex. Nothing over 4lbs but the bream provided non-stop action. A few carp also reported.

Don't forget the Mount at Buckley is now open to all members as the welsh travel restrictions were lifted from last Monday. I was up there myself on Monday, although sadly not fishing but members I spoke with on my 'rounds' had all caught carp, nothing big but good sport. Our bailiff Brian Jones has been having some good catches of quality roach on the feeder where specimens can top the magical two pond mark.

Our Sunday Mersey Series this week took place at Kingsway allotments  and saw John Green the winner with 10-11-0 where he caught on the pole but after snagging up a number of times he eventually changed to the tip and groundbait feeder which brought three positive bites but only one bream made it to the net but it was enough. Second placed Ray Boden fished the pole and maggot throughout for a weight of 10-2-0.

Twenty anglers turned out again for our Disabled and Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal near Daresbury Laboratories. Ron Durr took first place with 4-10-10 made up of a few tiny roach with a bonus bream of 4lbs. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne took second place 4-4-0 made up entirely of small roach.

Both new and existing members really need to read their membership books so that they are in no doubt about the rules and member obligations of our club. For example, litter which no member ever leaves and is an impossibility if they adhere to the directive 'Remove all litter from their peg area and take it home.' Another rule which ensures clean fisheries is 'No disposable barbeques, single use bottles or cans/tins are allowed on our fisheries.' End result is much cleaner fisheries.

Garry Finn and his son Kian 14 years had a great session at Appleton Reservoir on Friday morning where kian beat his long-standing personal best carp with one weighing in at 19-7-0. This is the second occasion in the past fourteen days that he has beaten his dad with a specimen catch. Garry was quite happy though with his two carp of 12-0-0 and 12-9-0. Kian fished a hair rigged 16mm sticky bait manilla boilie.

Scott McKeown certainly set the bar high with his first night session on Appleton Reservoir with a catch of six carp with two easily estimated at over the twenty pound mark and the rest upper doubles, for sure he won't forget his scales again😊  Scott was more than happy and reckoned with seven fish hooked and six landed it was an awesome session.

It's not all carp though with reports of tench and some great catches of quality roach. But, don't forget all anglers must park in our locked car park. So, it is important that members park sensibly to maximise the space. If you can't access the car park your only alternative is either to get dropped off or leave and fish another of our venues.

Howard Marshall and his mate Martin fished the Weaver Navigation for the first time on Tuesday and were very impressed with the access to the pegs and fishing within a few steps of their car. Martin fished a pole in the margins most of the time, and Howard fished between one and two rod lengths, both using maggot and pinkies, with occasional small balls of groundbait. They would catch a few fish and bites in quick succession, then it would go quiet for half an hour or so, then the bites would come again. They ended up with roach, rudd, perch, dace, roach/bream hybrids, skimmers and bream to 1-8-0.

Stu Roberts tried his hand on this venue on Friday and despite the weather caught a nice net of bream for around 23lb plus a few roach, rudd, a couple of perch and a dace thrown in for good measure. He fished the pole at about 6metres with maggot and a small amount of groundbait.

On Monday Neil Davies enjoyed his first visit on an evening session on the Navigation, it being a complete change and more productive than his recent Mersey sessions. He was pleasantly surprised with his net of skimmers and a few perch, all caught on the top five sections of his pole on single and double maggot over groundbait.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed his Saturday visit to the Mersey where fishing close to the bank on a light quiver tip he had lots of bites with small fish so changed to a waggler alternating between maggot and pinkie to end up with five hybrids, six perch, the rest roach for around thirty fish in all. Tuesday this week saw Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt at Mersey Walk with the river carrying flood water and rising. Ken had an 8oz perch plus a roach just over the pound mark on pole and maggot. Dave set-up a method feeder with red robin pellet over curried particle ground bait to slide his net under two 6lb plus bream. A change to straight ledger added four decent roach to 1.5lbs, plus two perch around a pound.

Anthony Rough made the most of the opening of the Welsh waters to the English side of the border as travelling restrictions were lifted on Monday. He was off in a flash like the 'road-runner' as he made his way to the picturesque River Alyn where he fished a stick-float loose-feeding maggot for a couple of nice grayling.

Our Sunday Mersey Series this week took place on the Victoria Park length and saw Jimmy Byrne draw another end peg which as in last week's match he made pay with 18-2-0 to take first place. His net was made up of a few small silvers plus three bream, the best weighed 7-4-0, all caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Derek Bibby who won the match last week also drew on the bream pegs was relegated to second place with 10-6-0 fishing the same method. Certainly, nice to see the bream being caught again.

Twenty anglers turned out for our Disabled and Over 60's match on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road which saw Mike Worley take his first win of 2020 with 3-11-0 of small roach and perch caught on pole-fished pinkie.  Second place went to Ron Durr with a similar net of fish for 3-1-6.

If anyone found a wallet at Appleton Reservoir on Saturday please get in touch with me at the number below and I will contact the grateful owner.

3oth June 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th June 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sport this past week has been up and down at many of our fisheries but still there have been some notable catches albeit many anglers are simply just happy to be able to go out fishing again.

Tony Evans enjoyed a short morning session at Ackers Pit on Thursday where fishing a waggler and simple bread paste he connected with seven decent fish, obviously carp and after some rod-bending moments only four made it to his landing net. Nothing massive but he put the best at around the 8lbs mark. I will bet that there will not be many of the younger anglers who have even considered using bread paste. Both that and Blue-cap cheese were the staple baits when I was a kid!

Still on Ackers Pit several members and a local resident have expressed their concern regarding an upsurge in the rat population. A photograph sent to me this week showed seven of the pests feeding on either duck bread or particles of angler's bait. So, I would ask members is keep the lids securely on your bait tubs, try not drop any on the bankside, and take any unused bait home.

Alan Campbell had an enjoyable five-hour session on Sunday at Statham pool ending up with a mixed bag of roach, chub, skimmers, perch, and a tench of 1.5lbs. Twenty or so fish all caught on double red maggot. In addition, he landed two nice commons both in the 8-9lbs range which fell to feeder fished banded pellet.

Stuart Roberts had a good day on the River Dee at Worthenbury earlier in the week  where he fished the stick-float and maggot and reckons he lost loads of dace off the hook, probably only landing one in ten so understandably he was getting a bit frustrated when out of the blue came a 5lb chub following this he hooked a grayling of about a pound that went  leaping out all over the place then came off at the net! Stuart couldn't get a bite after that so went for a walk to suss out another swim. He was just about to move when two other anglers turned up and dropped into this other peg. It turns out that they did him a favour as eventually changing his shotting pattern from bulk to shirt button style shirt button style he landed a five-pounder on his first cast and from then on kept catching until he ran out of bait. He ended up with chub from 1lb to 5lbs along with dace for around 32lb. He didn't even mind the leaky wader that much as the river was quite warm!

Scott Broadhurst made his first visit to Grey Mist on Sunday morning which he christened a with a nice mid-double mirror on his first cast. Although nothing much happened afterwards except for two small roach, a lost tench and countless liners. Scott was covered in his first brew off the day after the carp bolted through his other rod. An enjoyable but damp session!

Phil Stevens reckoned it was nice to get back on the River Mersey last week after a ten-year membership gap. It was a slow start but once put on the right track by kindly regular he caught a couple of nice bream on the feeder followed by a fish a chuck in the last hour when he changed over to the float fishing just a rod length out.

Our Sunday Mersey Series took place on the Mersey Walk length and saw the two end pegs take first and second places. The win went to veteran matchman Derek Bibby who fished both groundbait feeder and pole tactics for a weight of 10-2-0 of roach and skimmers. Drawn at the opposite end of the Jimmy Byrne weighed his catch at 7-2-0.

Nineteen anglers turned out for our Disabled and Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge which saw Ron Durr take first place with 3-15-4 of small roach and perch. Second place went to Derek Bibby with a similar net of fish for 3-9-4.

Many thanks to those small but select group of members who volunteered their services to form a fishery management volunteer group for our Wide Hole Fishery at Poynton.
