11th February 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
On Saturday Simon Oldfield had a wander along the River Dane at Holmes Chapel and with the river showing a little colour and fining off the conditions looked promising. He fished a shouldered alloy stemmed stick-float set up on 5lbs line and a 16's hook. Loose-feeding maggot with double red on the business end he ended up with a couple of chub, two nice grayling, and a brace of trout and an enjoyable session in pleasant surroundings.
Gareth Wright visited the River Dee at Shocklach on Thursday and finally had some fly-fishing success with a decent grayling taken on a nymph. Certainly, the Dee holds some cracking grayling and our stretches are worth a trip no matter what method you chose.
The Mersey Match Series on Sunday was almost a non-event as no doubt due to the current highwater levels reminiscent to the Orinoco only three hardy anglers turned up for the draw. Warrington Rowing Club took the decision to abandon their annual club winter race and retire to the clubhouse for a general tidy-up, but not these trio. Jim Gannon was the eventual winner with 8oz, Chris Wray next with 6oz, and Ade Green who has a penchant for coming at the latter end of the weekly results did not disappoint with 2oz.
As was the case last week our four hour Disabled and Over 60's Match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge was again an altogether different ball game despite the lowest canal levels experienced for some time Ray Boden caught a winning net of roach plus a few perch for a weight of 6-9-13. Just over half an ounce separated second placed Ron Durr who had a similar catch for 6-9-3. Pole with punched bread, pinkie, or caster was the method of the day.
The Trafford Rowing Club are holding their Trafford Rowing Head event on Saturday between 6.30 am to 6pm. The course is 3.2 km and runs from Oldfield Brow Marina (start is by the green crane) to Walton Park Sports Centre, Sale.
Please keep those reports coming as at this time of the year there is not a lot happening, so good, bad, or indifferent they will help fellow members to plan any trips to the bankside. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
