30th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Jamie Hodgeson christened his new membership book on Thursday, choosing Appleton Reservoir for his first visit to a WAA fishery where within two minutes of casting in he was into his first fish, a mirror carp of 15lbs. Twenty minutes later he was playing another, eventually landing one of 20lbs. I have no idea if he caught further fish and hope his mate Alan Hunter, also a new member caught. On the opposite bank 15year old Bob Shaw ended his day session with a carp of 17-6-0 watched by his dad David who informed me that this was the second visit in succession that he had been bested by his son.

Neil Plunkett didn't fancy driving far on Thursday so decided to give Statham Pool a try as it's only a couple of miles from home and he hadn't fished it since last year. On what was a blustery day Neil caught ten large bream plus assorted skimmers, roach and perch. The bream were all between 2 to 4 lbs and a lovely bronze colour.  They were all caught on luncheon meat and micro pellets in a method feeder.  One male fish the largest was nearly black and covered in spawning tubercles, a real old warrior.

Neil was out again today (Tuesday) with a change of venue to the Mount at Buckley for the first time since late last summer.  He caught a brace of carp about 7-8 lbs, a mirror and a leather, 3 tench up to about 3lbs and 5 bream up to about 2.5 lbs. All fell to either meat or corn using a method feeder and for good measure Neil also set-up a slider float at 15ft depth. After catching some small silvers on maggot, he switched to corn for half a dozen nice roach up to 1lb. According to our bailiff carp and bream are showing throughout the lake.

Ted Small settled on Cicely Mill Pool which he hadn't fished so far this year and had bite after bite for four hours. He ended up with about 50 fish, mostly roach, a few skimmers and perch, but also a good number of roach/bream hybrids up to about 12oz. Biggest roach were about 8oz. Waggler fished red maggot was the best bait but Ted also had some on sweetcorn.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge on Monday and unusually the winner George Barber aka 'The Breadman' didn't even know he had won! It just so happened that I was chatting to him today (Tuesday) and thought he was joking when he asked me if I knew who had won. It transpired that he had to leave immediately the match finished to go to a concert so his catch of skimmers to 1lb taken on punched bread for a weight of 3-13-4 put him in the money. Graham Belton took second place with a similar catch with 2-8-10.

I am looking for information relating to a blue coloured plastic algae control pipe at Worthington Reservoir which has been removed from the water and cut neatly into lengths on the bank. Please get in touch if you know anything on the number below or by email.

Thanks to those members who send catch reports as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.

23rd April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

With record temperatures over the Easter holiday it was equally pleasant to catch a few unseasonal rays of sunshine as well as fish. Mike Pritchard enjoyed a short stint at Ackers Pit on Saturday where he started his session with waggler fished red maggot and pinkie, soon changing to caster for some better stamp fish. He ended up with around thirty roach to 1lb plus a brace of rudd around eight to ten ounces.

Anthony Rough spent four hours of Good Friday morning on The Mount at Buckley. Fishing a waggler and feeding maggots, with a single maggot on the hook and after a steady start the action picked up with a bite almost ever cast. Anthony ended the session with 15lb of roach the best a few ounces short of 2lb. He reckoned it was good news that there appeared to be lots of fish showing from the recent stocking and he missed a lot more bites than he hit! Anthony was back at the venue again on Tuesday only this time he decided on the pole at 9metres as his preferred method of attack. Fishing up in the water at 3ft depth his float didn't stop going under all day. A lucky break came when he tangled his rig which gave him a chance to eat his sandwiches.

Philip Brown escaped from Grey Mist to Rixton Claypits on Sunday and enjoyed a good bream session with not a tench in sight. He ended up with twelve to fourteen slabs and only finished fishing when he ran out of groundbait.

But the Mist proved irresistible to returning member Bill Stanley who christened his new membership after a thirty-year absence with a PB tench of 5-12-0 and followed this up with a 6-10-0 specimen. A smaller one of 4-8-0 followed but then his PB went again for the third time with a fish of 7-6-0. He was very appreciative of fellow anglers who kindly put him on the right method and caught all his fish on maggot. Bill commented, "All in all a spectacular introduction to WAA."

Tom Fahey also had a half-decent day on Grey Mist but unfortunately he had to cut the session short when his bed-chair collapsed and he injured his back. But not before catching a 21-3-0 mirror topped by another of 26-4-0 plus a tench just under 7lb. All caught on Sticky Baits Krill boilies.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan on Monday where in a very close match with only a single fish between the first three anglers Jimmy Byrne ended up the eventual winner with a catch of skimmers and crucians for a weight of 12-2-11. Alan Pendlebury took second place with a similar catch with 11-12-15.

16th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to Grey Mist regular Philip Brown who agreed to fish the water for an Anglers Mail tench article which appeared in last weeks edition. It was superb and I am certain will be a great help to both fellow and future members. I visited the Mist myself today on a management issue and chatting to members all except one who was targeting carp had caught tench. By far the stars of the day were Paul Jones and Chris Penny who fishing adjacent pegs and encouraged by Philips article really got amongst the tincas in what Paul described as a red-letter day. Both fished feeder tactics introducing chopped worms with small red worms on the hook. Chris ended up with nine with the best at 7-7-0 but his PB set on this fishery seven years ago at 8-7-0 remains unchanged. Whereas Paul ended up with sixteen fish and surpassed his previous PB of 6-5-0 no less than five times with the biggest at 7-11-0. Fellow member Graham Ashton reported catching eleven fish last Tuesday with the best at 8-7-0 and as I left the fishery, he had just caught his first tench of the day.

Some encouraging recent carp catches from both Sandiway Lakes and Moore Quarry that certainly back up our current annual top-up stocking policy. The good news is that these fish have been consistently putting on weight and are producing some stunning specimens.

Dave Stansfield managed to slot in a brief two-and-a-half-hour session on Budworth Mere last Wednesday where he half expected to 'be going through the motions' but at least he would be out in the fresh air. Well, with expectations not too high his catch of eleven decent roach with one he estimated at around the 1.5lbs mark plus a single bream were very welcome. Dave fished a heavy groundbait feeder and double red maggot.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge on Monday ended up with a tie for first place between Graham Belton and Rod Fraser both with a weight of 3-3-0. Rod had mainly small roach on bread punch and pinkie whilst Graham stuck it out on his privately sourced small red worms that attracted a small skimmer, a few small roach, but more importantly a bonus 2lbs perch. Not too far behind third placed Alan Brown put together a net of roach for 3-1-14.

9th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column Notes

9th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Kyle Tilbury has recently re-joined Warrington Anglers after a seven-year spell away from the sport and decided on Grey Mist to mark his return. On Saturday there was nothing happening, not even a sign of a fish, but determined to 'crack it' he was back on the bank on Monday after work for a few hours. Again, no action whatsoever but undeterred he was back the following day and was finally rewarded with a double figure common and on Wednesday he landed a leather, whilst on Thursday he managed to bag himself a mirror. Kyle used simple multi rigs and all fish have fell to a simple snowman presentation. Tom Fahey also enjoyed his Sunday evening session landing a 17lb 2oz Common Carp from the fishery on Sunday taken on Sticky Baits Krill boilie.

Neil Plunkett braved a cold wind that swept across our Cicily Mill Pool on Tuesday and had to move swims three times to find the fish. He ended his session with fourteen roach with some in the 6 to 8oz bracket plus a crucian of 2lbs. Fish were caught on single maggot using both waggler and a small groundbait feeder. Chatting to our bailiff they both came to the conclusion that for sport to really switch on a few weeks of warmer weather was needed.

Ste Pielow caught a nice looking 19lbs mirror from Appleton Reservoir on Tuesday Morning and shared it on our Facebook group along with catch details which really is one of the prime reasons for the group. Thanks Ste and wish more members would be more forthcoming with such information.

The Bridgewater Canal is always worth a visit for some predator action with either pike or perch and Elwyn Jones wasn't disappointed when drop-shotting at Statham on Sunday. He landed a brace of stripeys of 2-4-0 and 2-6-0 and lost a decent pike at the net which took a liking to his small lure.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge was won this week by George Barber with an all roach catch of 3-5-11. I haven't got method details but I will lay odds that he was using bread, hence his handle of The Breadman and possibly pinkies for good measure. Alan Brown was in second place with 2-0-9.

2nd April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sport on any of our fisheries at present is breaking no records and it was the same for Mike Pritchard who targeted Statham Pool over last weekend. He fished his usual waggler tactics alternating between maggot and caster for a grand total of fifteen roach despite the fact that he could see carp and bream cruising on the surface through his swim but they were clearly not in a feeding mood. Other members similarly struggled during the day on this prolific fishery.

Dave Freeman decided to try Hamptons Pool for the first time on Thursday which currently only has a few fishable swims and is long overdue for a major facelift. Not knowing what to expect he travelled light with a pole, landing net, a small folding seat, and maggots. It was an hour before his first roach which was followed by twenty or so others including a couple of rudd. I must admit It is some years since I last fished this small pool which then also held carp and a few tench.

Anglers are still catching a few fish on Worthington Reservoirs where currently Adlington is now closed until 16th June. Arley is the water of choice where last weekend I was chatting to one angler who reported two carp just over the 20lbs during his overnight session.

Anglers targeting carp or tench on weedy or snaggy waters should in the interests of fish welfare use a drop off lead set-up. When you compare the price of a few lost leads to the average price of a 20lbs plus carp at around £900 it is a no brainer as lead retention carries a greater risk of tethered fish. Fixed leads or 'death rigs' are against all the principles of fish conservation and most certainly our bailiffs will be to say the least taking a dim view and offenders may well end up before the committee.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane saw most anglers really struggling and you needed to draw a bridge hole for any chance of winning. Well, Ray Boden who runs our Mersey matches has had to look for other competition opportunities since the onset of the Coarse Fish Close Season on rivers and the Bridgewater fitted the bill. Ray on his first Stillwater match for some time even managed to draw bang on the money adjacent to George Gleaves Bridge where fishing pole with bread and pinkie he made it pay with a winning weight of roach for 3-9-5. Alan Brown took second place from the other side of the bridge with 2-9-10.
