26th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

26th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sadly one of our long time bailiffs Tony Cope passed away last week in hospital after a serious cycling accident in Speke. A crowd funding page has been setup in his memory and if anyone wishes to donate they can do so on the following link:- https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/inmemoryofanthonycope?utm_id=106  Our condolences to his family at this sad time.

Ian McCausland managed to fit in a short but productive session at our High Legh fishery last week landing seven carp that had obviously taken an almost addictive liking to his specially prepared and treated 'cubed bread pop-ups'. Slightly bizarre, but they obviously work. Nothing massive, all around the 8 to 10lbs mark, but Ian was more than happy.

Ian Street on my advice decided to try Arley Reservoir on his day off on Monday and managed three decent bream on feeder and double maggot, two of which came in the last thirty minutes of his four-hour session. Could it have been more if he had styed fishing for a bit longer? Well, we'll never know but that's angling and anyway it was pleasant weather.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road saw George Barber aka 'The Breadman' make the most of his bridge-hole draw to secure a win with 5-1-4 of skimmers and roach taken on pole and bread punch tactics. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with a weight of 3-6-4.

The Mount at Buckley benefitted by a good stocking of mainly roach and skimmer bream on Saturday thanks to the efforts of our volunteers who netted and transported the fish. The Mount is one of our popular fisheries with safe locked parking for members.

Our AGM took place on Thursday last and along with some good banter with members in attendance it was all round an enjoyable evening. Thanks to Grappenhall Ex-Servicemens Club for their hospitality and Martin at the Daltons for the excellent buffet.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.

19th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Nothings charged, the olive beauties are still feeding on Grey Mist and new member Tony Rennie made his debut visit to the fishery on Friday in an endeavour to better his tench PB which had not moved forward in 24 years! He was set-up and raring to go at 8am and within the hour a male tench of 6-8-0 lay in his landing net and a new PB. At 10-15 another tench of 6-12-0 was landed and another PB! A further three tench followed to bring an end to a cracking days fishing. It may have been his first visit to the Mist but most certainly not his last. Oh, the successful bait, Tony's home-grown worms. Fellow angler Steve Roffey spent three hours sat in the rain with not a sign of fish and then his mood brightened as he caught five in the next two hours with the best fish 7-8-0. Edvinas Kelbauskas who was targeting tench certainly had a fight on his hands when his maggot bait was taken by a carp of 24lbs that took him 20 minutes to land. He also had three tench for good measure.

Bobby Shaw enjoyed his session on Appleton reservoir when he caught a new PB carp of 22-8-0. Ivan Brookes had quite a busy roach session fishing a small groundbait feeder loaded with a sprinkling of micro-pellets and maggot with double red maggot on the hook catching twenty-three fish to 12ozs.

Our last match before the outdated coarse fish close season on rivers comes into force at midnight on the 14th March took place on Thursday on the River Mersey at Mersey Walk. Derek Bibby ended what was a really successful season for this local angling legend with a winning weight of 13-12-0 made up of two bream for 10lbs plus roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. One of his bream weighed in at 7-12-0 and in fact Derek had more that the total of all the other anglers! Second placed Neil Buist put a catch of four small skimmers and six roach on the scales to take second place with 14 ounces. Committee members Mike Dench really thought he was in with a shout when he hooked into a really hard fighting fish on the pole only to eventually land a pike which don't count in matches.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton saw a blast from the past, Stu Bryant the winner with a net of roach, skimmers, and small rudd caught alternating between pinkie and caster for a weight of 4-8-2. WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks wasn't far behind taking second place with a similar catch for a weight of 4-1-9. Again, the fish were tightly shoaled and the first three anglers sat on adjacent pegs. On the other side of the bridge anglers really struggled for bites.

12th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tench are still feeding on Grey Mist and Phil Brown braved the wind and rain today Monday) to repeat his last Monday catch of three quality fish, each 6lbs plus using his usual successful method of maggot feeder.

Wayne Cole was very happy with his end of season visit to our stretch of the River Ribble on Monday where he managed to land three barbel. His dilemma was should he call it quits for the season and end it on a high or go again before Friday and risk a blank. I rather think the current weather has made his decision for him.

Our Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Mersey Walk saw Chris Wray clock up his first win of the year and with only a few small fish in the net and 5 minutes remaining of the match he decided on a desperate chuck and chance method whilst he had a brew. Off came the maggots from his size 18's hook which he substituted for a lobworm. Surprise, surprise it proved a match winner when his tip suddenly shot round and he was into a decent fish. After a heart stopping fight a 6lbs bream lay in his landing net shooting his winning weight up to 6-5-0. On the next peg and unaware of this last-minute development Ade Green with a weight of exactly 6lbs thought that he had the win in the bag. How wrong you can be when lady luck coupled with angling skill takes a hand.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge saw Alan brown the winner with a net of roach and perch caught alternating between bread punch and pinkie for 6lbs exactly. Ron Durr was trailing by only a few fish taking second place with a similar catch for a weight of 5-14-5. The fish were tightly shoaled and some anglers really struggled for a bite. Not surprising considering that only several days previous regular contributor to this column Mike Pritchard tried several pegs whilst pleasure fishing and ended up with only six fish for his efforts.

Our bailiffs enjoyed a chat and get together with colleagues on Tuesday evening courtesy of the Star Inn at Statham. Definitely a prize-winning pint of Guinness!

5th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Emma Dunbavand has been having some pike success on Grey Mist lately and Saturday was no exception when she landed three fish in around an hour and a half. Her comment, "Fab afternoons fishing."

Tench are still featuring in catches on the Mist and Phil brown was in action again on Monday when he landed three quality fish. I even bought some bait myself today (Tuesday) hoping I can get out for a few hours.

Now there's a river I have not had a report from for some time, the Gowy where we own a length and rent others. Paul Harrison walked most of it on his recent visit dropping a light stick-float in here and there catching about twenty small roach and a dace of about 6ozs. I would lay a bet that his was the first line cast in the water this season. If you know different please get in touch. Of course, the 14th March will be the last time you can fish it for coarse fish until the 16th of June, with those dates heralding the 90-day dinosaur of a close season.

What I do wonder is how many river anglers have actually filled in the online 'River coarse fishing close season consultation' which ends on Monday 11th March. It is vitally important that anglers who fish rivers have their say on this imposed restriction to our sport for which there is no proven benefit or reason. I would urge everyone to go online to the Environment Agency website and complete the consultation document.

I would remind members that all our gates should be locked where fitted. They are there for a reason and that is to protect our fisheries and members property.  A member received a ban this week for failing to re-lock a gate that he had already unlocked and driven through. Our rules are not complicated and simply common sense. The excuse 'I didn't know' does not cut any ice, read the rules which you agreed to accept when you joined.

Our Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Mersey Walk saw match veteran Jimmy Byrne take another win with 11-4-0 of roach up to 10ozs caught on pole and maggot tactics. Taking second place and back in the prize money after somewhat of a lean spell was WAA committee member Ade Green who chose a different approach by starting on maggot feeder whilst loose-feeding caster on a bolo line where he ended up catching most of his all roach net for a weight of 7-10-0.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match saw a change of venue to Woodshaw Reservoir where it turned out that bites were hard to come by but Tim Dwerryhouse was a clear winner with a mixed net of roach and perch for 8-10-7. Alan Brown was in second place with all the 4's 4-4-4.
