30th January 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th January, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Bailiff, Philip Brown caught his first tench of 2018, a five-pounder taken on a small feeder and double maggot on a size 14's hook. He was fishing twenty yards out on Grey Mist Mere on Wednesday and followed this up by a cracker that went to just over 8lbs. Those bronze beauties look like they are waking up!

Ian Bowers must have read my mind as last week I visited Phoenix Park Lake checking on pegs and despite a lot of weed I really fancied a go. I fully intended to get some bait but was side-tracked by other fishery issues elsewhere and didn't make it. Well, Ian did and fished halfway along on the canal side with a small ground bait feeder and maggot but the tip was motionless. He was about to call it a day after a bite-less hour and a half when the tip moved and a chunky roach lay in the net. Ian ended up with a dozen roach and two skimmers.

Warrington Anglers match results this week kicked off with our Sunday Mersey Series where Jimmy Byrne needed only a weight of 1-4-10 made up of ten small roach caught on ground bait feeder and maggot. In joint second were Norman Gannon and Al Morris with 0-10-14.

The weights thankfully improved at our Disabled & Over 60's match held between Hough's and Walton Bridges on the Bridgewater Canal. George Hollis weighed in a roach and perch catch for 2-6-14 taken on punched bread and pinkie. George Barber fished bread punch to take second place with 2-1-9. There was a lot of pike activity reported along the match length.

Any reports always more than welcome, including 'humorous bankside happenings' send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

23rd January 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd January, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Friday Bridgewater Canal regular Mike Pritchard struggled when he visited the 'Dead-length' on the Bridgewater at Walton where as I have mentioned regularly that the fish tightly shoal up during the winter months. But as with all angling sessions you are either 'on fish or not' and Mike couldn't get a bite. Eventually 'the bread-man' aka George Barber who is a regular on the local match scene turned up to try his luck twenty yards or so further up the canal. I am not exactly certain but would more than hazard a guess that he first of all potted some liquidised Warburtons into his swim as according to Mike he started catching from the off. I was right, as I have since spoken with George who told me that he fished punched bread throughout and ended his session with 150 to 200 fish. As for Mike, he moved to a swim twenty yards to the other side of George and straight away started catching on pinky.

This week I am reporting on some really desperate Warrington Anglers match results. Our Sunday Mersey Series which has been supported throughout the winter by a hardy band of match anglers despite some atrocious river and weather conditions saw anglers struggling for bites. But when the chips were down Ade Green fishing a ground-bait feeder and maggot managed to winkle a dozen tiny roach from his swim for a weight of 15oz to take the win. Whereas Pete Jones only weighed two fish, a tiny roach and bonus 10oz skimmer bream for his 11oz to take second place.

Just when you would think it couldn't get any worse a change of venue for our Disabled & Over 60's to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road proved wrong. Iconic angler Roy Rogers fished pole and pinky for a weight of 0-4-12. Well-known local rod Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 0-2-10. For the record fourteen anglers fished but only five had a bite!

It gets really desperate as regards catch reports at this time of the year so any reports are more than welcome, including 'humorous bankside happenings' send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

16th January 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th January, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Despite the unsettled weather Jim Connor managed to chance a three-hour afternoon session on the River Dane at Holmes Chapel. Not expecting to break any records he was pleasantly surprised on his third trot down to see his float dip resulting in a grayling around a pound. Although it wasn't exactly a bite every cast four others of a similar stamp fell to his loose-fed maggots until the swim died and Jim decided it was time to head for home.

Appleton Reservoir continues to be the main water providing any regular stillwater action where pole, waggler, and tip methods are producing decent roach sport. Maggot is the favoured bait.

Al Morris won our Sunday Mersey Series in what were hard conditions with a weight of 2-7-4 of small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Ant Higham aka King of the River was in second place with 1-14-0 of roach.

A change of venue to our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery for the Disabled and Over 60's Series saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne clock up another win with a weight of 8-2-0 made up of roach and a bonus carp.  John Mills was in second place with 4-11-0. There was no swimming prize but after the match Graham Belton got off his box (with umbrella attached) to put his rods away in his holdall when a sudden gust of wind, I know that you are ahead of me but it gets worse; yes, the box sailed into the drink but unfortunately the catches were open so distributing the contents throughout his peg. Gritting his teeth, he salvaged what he could although his third place winnings would hardly pay for what was lost.

Please note that before venturing onto our fisheries all members must attach a current signed identity photograph on the rear inside cover of their membership book to enable bailiffs to identify persons on our waters. This is to stop the 'lending' of books by a few who may wish to chance their arm and cheat fellow members. This condition also applies for any replacement.

Please send any your catch reports to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

9th January 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th January, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

With some waters frozen over this weekend one member was living in hopes when our bailiff found his pike float and dead-bait that this mystery angler had cast onto the surface of an iced over Rixton Claypits. Eskimo style or what? Thankfully waters are now ice-free and if you are fancying some predator action those pike will be on the hunt on the Bridgewater Canal so wrap up well and enjoy.

Chris Connell enjoyed a brilliant day's fishing at Woodshaw Reservoir on Saturday with an abundance of good stamp roach. He initially caught on a small method feeder and groundbait with double pinkie on the hook. A change to the pole at 9metres using pellet fished over micros brought a smaller stamp of fish but a further change to maggots and pinkies brought in the skimmers and bigger roach. Chris even found time to share his salmon butties with the resident swan and things really looked up when his wife arrived with a hot cup of pea and ham soup and the end of a perfect day on the bank.

Jim Gannon clocked up an early New Year win on our Sunday Mersey match series with a catch of ten roach weighing 1-8-0.  Al Morris was in second place with eight roach for 1-3-0. put his catch of six small roach and an eel on the scales for a weight of 0-13-0. Ground-bait feeder and punch bread was the winning method used by Jim whereas Al used feeder and maggot. One bit of insider info was that Ade Green missed out for third place when he found a perch in the bottom of his net after the weigh-in.

The first of our 2018 Disabled and Over 60's Series kicked off on the Bridgewater Canal on the Dead-length between Houghs and Walton bridges on Monday. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne won from Peg 4 with weight of 3-10-14 of roach. Trevor Bainbridge was the runner-up with 3-5-10.  All of the top four weights were over 3lbs.

2nd January 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd January, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Bites are hard to come by on most of our fisheries at this time of the year but Phil Smythe certainly 'dropped on' when he fished a wet and windy Macclesfield Canal at Astbury on New Years Day. Fishing canals can be hit and miss during the winter especially so with the unsettled weather of late and to make it more difficult fish are prone to shoaling up. Undeterred, Phil kicked off 2018 in good style as he means to go on, catching a roach on his first put in. He started off putting in three tiny thumb sized balls of groundbait with a few pinkies fishing the pole down the track. He had caught four roach when striking into another bite the fish torpedoed across the canal stretching his 4's elastic to the limit and after what seemed like an age a cracking perch of around 2lbs lay in his landing net. A quiet period followed until the roach came back on the feed and Phil ended his session more than happy with another twenty plus roach.

Not too far away is our Association owned Wide Hole Fishery which if you have ever fished there the name is self-explanatory. It is immediately adjacent to the Macclesfield Canal and if you can picture the canal with the side opposite the towpath being non-existent and blending perfectly without any meaningful physical boundaries with our pool due to subsidence. It is a cracking fishery being a holding area and refuge from boat traffic producing good bream, roach, and pike catches. Currently we are looking for a fairly local bailiff to take over from Mike Burdock who has moved away from the area. Interested? Please give drop me an email and I will pass it to our head bailiff.

Our Sunday Mersey match saw a change of winner this week when Al Morris put his catch of six small roach and an eel on the scales for a weight of 0-13-0. Match ace Jimmy Byrne who has won the past four matches in succession was relegated to second place in what was an extremely low weight match with 0-3-14. Ground-bait feeder and maggot was the method used by both anglers.
