Chris Connell enjoyed a good session at Worthington Lakes on Monday after bringing his old Shapespeare Graphite Glass Dennis White Clubman waggler rod out of a twenty-seven year retirement following a 're-fit'. Chris bought the rod with his paper round money from George's Tackle in Frog Lane, Wigan and coupled with his classic Mitchell Match reel using a slider float set-up he varied baits between caster, worm, maggot, and pinkie to catch some quality perch and roach. He followed this up with a return visit on Tuesday when using casters he caught some more clonking roach and perch. He is giving his old rod a rest tomorrow, well, actually Chris's arm was 'dropping off' so its back to more modern lighter tackle to give his aching muscles a chance to recover.
On Saturday I took fellow committee member Ade Green for a stick-float session to my favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury. Obviously, I gave him the best swim where he managed a couple of grayling in the first hour, and yours truly zilch. So, we ended up moving swims leapfrogging each other to find the fish until there were only two possible swims remaining. Bingo, Ade had four grayling in quick succession and like a true angler let me know, so I dropped in the other swim. I ended up with lucky for some thirteen fish, a trout and a dozen grayling whereas Ade won the day with two trout and seventeen grayling. We both fished the stick-float and fed hemp and bronze maggot. No records broken, but nevertheless an enjoyable day.
I have received an email today from the Angling Trust:- They have been advised by Jelf Insurance Brokers that the cover provided under the Sportscover Sports Liability Policy in as far as it applies to individual members of Angling Trust member clubs and syndicates, covers your members only when they are engaged in activities connected with the member club or syndicate. We would respectfully ask that your club committee or syndicate leader takes action to ensure that your members are aware of this limitation to the cover. Individual anglers who wish to ensure that they have the benefit of public liability insurance for all their angling activities worldwide, whether connected with a member club or not, can join the Angling Trust as an individual member and receive this cover as an automatic benefit of membership.
A heavy frost on Monday morning put paid to any chance of decent weights on our Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. Roy Rogers put his pre-match practice on the venue to good use and fishing pole and bread punch he caught small roach for a winning weight of 12-4. It was ironic that fishing in the same area only six days before he had enjoyed a fish every put in; that's angling. An and peg draw saw veteran angler Ronnie Durr take second place with 9-10.
On his first visit to the Mersey this season Arthur Plumb edged ahead of match organiser Ray Boden by a few ounces to put 6-5-0 of roach and perch on the scales to take the win. He fished bolo and maggot whereas runner-up Ray Boden went for a groundbait feeder and maggot attack catching a bonus brace of hybrids plus roach and perch for 6-2-0.
