28th November 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th November, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I mentioned in last weeks column that there were good numbers of pike that had moved in on the shoals of small silver fish between Houghs and Walton bridges, well, Dave Higgins followed this up and fishing soft lures on a light drop-shot road he managed three of these toothy predators. There were no record breakers with the biggest at 11-2-0, but they made his visit on a cold frosty morning worth the effort. Mike Pritchard fished the same area targeting the roach and caught mainly smaller fish with a few better specimens when he changed to caster.  Pike were continuously attacking his keepnet after an easy feed, so much so that a pike angler obliged and caught a pike alongside the net!

A move to the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road saw Lennie Dutton chalk up a win with a net of small roach for 3-9-0. Famous for his end peg draws Lennie fished pole and punch. Second placed Jimmy Byrne caught a bonus perch well over a pound to which he added some small roach.

Somehow last week my reported Mersey results went awry and several angler's efforts went unreported, including this Sunday's winner Ade Green. In less than ideal angling conditions when bites were hard to come by he managed to winkle out 1-3-0 of tiny roach and a small skimmer using a groundbait feeder and maggot….when the going gets tough the tough get going, or something like that. In joint second were Ant Higham aka 'the King' and Roy Everson with 1-2-0.

Members Tom Fahey and Jeff Cropper have volunteered to collate all cormorant sightings on Warrington Anglers waters with the intention that where there is a problem and all other measures fail they can submit an application for control measures. So, it is vitally important that members report every sighting by text to 07538 494353 which is solely for recording cormorant numbers. It would be ideal if members put this number in their phones. Anglers should be aware that noisy scaring measures may be employed where required.

21st November 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st November, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Reg Lewis who was one of our long serving Committee members sadly lost his fight with cancer earlier this week. He joined the management team on the 4th July 1988 and served for 29 years until recently. Reg motivated a team of volunteers and tackled the majority of the peg construction work around our fisheries and was also a past member of our netting team. Our condolences go out to his wife and family.

Thank goodness that a move to a known winter fish shoaling up area on the Bridgwater Canal at Walton saw weights improve dramatically from the previous week for our Disabled & Over 60's Christmas prize match. Whereas last week the winner only needed twelve ounces, on Monday Alan Brown put an impressive 6-7-5 on the scales to take the main prize money. He fished the pole alternating between bread punch and pinkie for a mixed net of roach and perch. George Hollis was in second place with 5-10-10 fished the same method. The fish were concentrated between Houghs and Walton Hall Bridges so that's where I would be looking for a spot of predator fishing this weekend. Twenty-two fished.

Martin Lenihan won our River Mersey Christmas Fayre match on Sunday with a weight of 5-10-0 of mainly roach plus a few hybrids taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. In joint second were Jimmy Byrne and Alan Morris with 2-15-0. All of the eighteen anglers who fished received a prize.

Martin Harrison reporting on his first fly fishing season with WAA had some very enjoyable game fishing on the Alyn, Dee and Dane. On his seven visits to the Alyn at Rossett fishery he reports seven brown trout, fourteen grayling and solitary chub. A change of scenery to the Dee at Worthenbury saw him catch four grayling and nine salmon parr. On the Dane at Holmes Chapel three decent grayling and three small ones that bodes well for the future of the species. Successful flies were, Klinkhammer, Olive Jingler, Pink Tag, Greenwell's (beadhead), Griffith's Gnat, Pheasant Tail Nymph, and Waterhen Bloa (tungsten bead).

Chorley based Anglers Mail photo-journalist Ian Chapman was joined on the WAA stretch of the Dane with Steve Collett where they created an autumn feature which will appear in this weeks paper. Steve put his stick float skills to the test and was rewarded with some fine grayling and chub.

14th November 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

14th November, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Chris Connell enjoyed a good session at Worthington Lakes on Monday after bringing his old Shapespeare Graphite Glass Dennis White Clubman waggler rod out of a twenty-seven year retirement following a 're-fit'. Chris bought the rod with his paper round money from George's Tackle in Frog Lane, Wigan and coupled with his classic Mitchell Match reel using a slider float set-up he varied baits between caster, worm, maggot, and pinkie to catch some quality perch and roach. He followed this up with a return visit on Tuesday when using casters he caught some more clonking roach and perch. He is giving his old rod a rest tomorrow, well, actually Chris's arm was 'dropping off' so its back to more modern lighter tackle to give his aching muscles a chance to recover.

On Saturday I took fellow committee member Ade Green for a stick-float session to my favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury. Obviously, I gave him the best swim where he managed a couple of grayling in the first hour, and yours truly zilch. So, we ended up moving swims leapfrogging each other to find the fish until there were only two possible swims remaining. Bingo, Ade had four grayling in quick succession and like a true angler let me know, so I dropped in the other swim. I ended up with lucky for some thirteen fish, a trout and a dozen grayling whereas Ade won the day with two trout and seventeen grayling. We both fished the stick-float and fed hemp and bronze maggot. No records broken, but nevertheless an enjoyable day.

I have received an email today from the Angling Trust:-  They have been advised by Jelf Insurance Brokers that the cover provided under the Sportscover Sports Liability Policy in as far as it applies to individual members of Angling Trust member clubs and syndicates, covers your members only when they are engaged in activities connected with the member club or syndicate. We would respectfully ask that your club committee or syndicate leader takes action to ensure that your members are aware of this limitation to the cover. Individual anglers who wish to ensure that they have the benefit of public liability insurance for all their angling activities worldwide, whether connected with a member club or not, can join the Angling Trust as an individual member and receive this cover as an automatic benefit of membership.

A heavy frost on Monday morning put paid to any chance of decent weights on our Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. Roy Rogers put his pre-match practice on the venue to good use and fishing pole and bread punch he caught small roach for a winning weight of 12-4. It was ironic that fishing in the same area only six days before he had enjoyed a fish every put in; that's angling. An and peg draw saw veteran angler Ronnie Durr take second place with 9-10.

On his first visit to the Mersey this season Arthur Plumb edged ahead of match organiser Ray Boden by a few ounces to put 6-5-0 of roach and perch on the scales to take the win. He fished bolo and maggot whereas runner-up Ray Boden went for a groundbait feeder and maggot attack catching a bonus brace of hybrids plus roach and perch for 6-2-0.

7th November 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th November, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our annual carp stocking last week brought out the usual clutch of spurious comments, the main one being that we should have selected our own carp as other clubs do. So, whilst I trust Viv Sheers from VS Fisheries implicitly, I rang him to double check regarding travelling down to 'choose' any future C6 carp. His answer was that they only produce 200 such fish per year for the whole of the country and nobody is allowed to 'rummage through' and risk damaging such expensive fish. This option can take place with smaller fish, but they are not part of our stocking program. At least the members who attended and helped with the stocking were well impressed with the fish. Many thanks to you all.

There has been a fish kill on the Trent & Mersey Canal around the vicinity of the new marina at Billinge Green back towards Northwich. The oxygen levels are very low around the 4% mark and up to now the casualties seem low and it may be that the fish are running before whatever is the cause. The Environment Agency Fisheries Team are investigating. If any member has any information please ring the EA on 0800 807060 or myself on the number below.

Graham Belton swapped his last week's runner-up position in our Disabled & Over 60's match on the Trent & Mersey Canal for a win this week at Woodshaw Reservoir. Graham fished the pole at 8metres alternating between pinkie and red maggot for a mixed net of skimmers, roach, perch, and gudgeon weighing 4-8-0. There was a tie for second place when both Gordon Ramsden and Alan Brown put 3-10-0 on the scales.

Mike Pritchard defied the predicted Mersey high tide on Saturday and set up on a peg near Kingsway allotments where fishing a quiver tip he missed two immediate bites. These were followed by two roach followed by a quiet spell despite lots of fish topping. A change to waggler saw him end his session with around thirty mainly roach and three perch.

Please note the Sunday Mersey Match Series is back on the 12th November. Also, would members please book on with match organiser Ray Boden asap for the annual Christmas Fayre match.
