3rd October 2017 Warrington Anglers Guardian Column

3rd October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Williams and his friend went to Budworth Mere on Saturday for a piking session but it didn't produce the result he was hoping for, in fact no action in 7 hours fishing on their four rods using methods found to be very productive on other waters. Their dead baits were taken, although not by anything with fins as several mink were bold enough to come up the bank in order to steal them. So, the big question is can any members throw any light on the pike situation on the Mere as both Tony and I would be very interested in any reports.

Catch reports around our Wigan fisheries are nothing to write home about and even on the normally productive Woodshaw Reservoir sport is up one day and down the next, although some locals seem to regularly find the fish. Let's see what happens next Monday when our Disabled & Over 60's try their luck on the venue. The gate to C & D Pools is at present locked by the farmer as he has cattle on the field and nobody I am sure would want their car paintwork licked by them. It is unbelievable the damage they can cause.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Predictably on this stretch weights were lower and local match ace Jimmy Byrne was the winner for the second week in succession with 3-2-6 made up of small roach and perch. The 'breadman' George Barber took the runner-up spot with 2-11-9.

Tuesday saw Ray Boden start the weeks match proceedings with yet another Mersey win with 8-4-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Dave Brooks wasn't too far behind in second place with 7-14-0 using the same method.

Two out of three isn't bad, yes Ray Boden backed up his Tuesday Series win and doubled the weight of the next angler to boot on our Saturday Mersey Series. He fished his usual pole and maggot tactics for a catch of three perch, one dace, and the rest roach for a weight of 11-5-0. Alan Morris in second place fished a ground bait feeder and maggot for 5-1-0. It is that time of the year when sport can be unpredictable.

Sunday's match saw Ray's protégé Ade Green take his fourth Mersey win this season from an unfavoured peg. He fished bolo and maggot for a weight of 9-4-0 of roach and perch with the majority being caught at the far end of his swim. Jimmy Byrnes took the runner-up spot and included a bonus 4lbs bream to add to his net of perch and roach for 8-12-0.
