31st October 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

We will be carrying out our annual carp stocking on Saturday starting with Grey Mist Mere around 10am and then Moore Quarry followed by Sandiway Lakes. The fish are from VS Fisheries are all C6's (six summers old) and should be twenty pounders. Any members who fancy turning up are more than welcome.

Ian McGrath on his fifth visit to our stretch of the Ribble at Hurst Green on Monday just managed to net a cracking salmon before the end of the season the following day. Taken on fly the fish weighed between 16 and 17lbs but a low phone battery deprived him of a really top bragging photo. Ian released the fish to breed and hopefully return a bigger specimen.

On Monday Anthony Rough enjoyed a short session before work on the River Alyn at Hope where he fished a small stick-float and double maggot on the hook. Loose-feeding maggot and fishing one of the deeper bends he caught nine brown trout and seven grayling up to a pound. Not huge fish but a nice couple of hours with plenty of bites before work.

George Hollis made the most of his bridge-hole draw on our regular Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Northwich. George fished pole and maggot to catch a mixed net of roach, skimmers, and a few chunky perch for a weight of 5-15-8 that gave him over 1lb buffer over second placed Graham Belton. Graham fished the same method but missed out on the perch for 4-12-0. Nineteen fished.

Predictably low weights on Sundays Mersey Match Series but local rod Jim Gannon fishing a ground bait feeder and maggot just kept ounces ahead of second placed Mersey devote Paul Harding. Jim put 3-4-0 of roach on the scales against Paul's 3lbs dead. No match until 12th November due to high tides.

24th October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Mike Pritchard intended to fish the Mersey on Friday but conditions were not ideal and quite windy so he decided to stay local and visit Ackers Pit. He set up in a sheltered peg and caught from the off using light waggler tactics and alternating between bronze maggot and pinkie plus feeding a few grains of hemp every cast. He caught plenty of roach in the 3 to 6oz range however a late change to caster brought a better stamp of roach in the 10/12oz bracket plus a few chunky perch. In all a decent days fishing and he went home a happy angler.

If you weren't a 'B' you were out of the frame on our Disabled & Over 60's match fished in the 'Dead Length' on Monday. Graham Belton enjoyed his first win for some time despite regularly knocking on the door. Committee member Graham fished the pole and alternated between pinkie and caster for a silver fish net of 5-6-0. It was Derek Bibby who took the runner-up spot with only a whisker separating the winner and himself with a weight of 5-6-2. Two further B's completed the prize line-up (see results below) and eighteen fished in an almost all roach event.

The king is back!!! Aka Ant Higham 'the King of the river' who after an absence seems to have got his Mojo back. By winning our Sunday Mersey series with a weight of 5-13-0 which included a mega-bonus bream of 3lbs that alone would have given him the winners money. Fishing a ground-bait feeder and maggot he also added a 12oz bream plus twelve tiny bootlace eels to over double the weight of second placed Ray Boden. Ray fished the same method for a net of 2-4-0 made up of fifteen tiny roach, two eels and three small skimmer bream.

Something to whet your appetite is that a new water should be coming online in the next few months, although obviously I cannot divulge details it is one that should give rewards to those members who like a challenge.

17th October 2017 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

17th October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

This Saturday should have been our annual carp stocking on Grey Mist, Moore Quarry, and Sandiway Lakes but due to the increased water temperatures in the holding ponds this has now been postponed in the interests of fish welfare. I will let members know when we receive a new date.

It is rare to get reports from this area due to limited parking but this did not deter Ian Swain who reports a lively piking session on the Trent & Mersey Canal this past weekend between Black Prince boats and Lodge Lane. Travelling light with a drop-shot rod he ended his session on Saturday with seven fish, a perch being the best specimen at exactly 2lbs, along with five pike to 9lbs.

And its pike again but this time from the Bridgewater Canal at Timperley where despite the threat of adverse weather on Sunday John Bradford set up float tackle with sprat sea-baits. The result in a three and a half hour session was three runs with two fish on the mat, 11.75lbs and 14-7-0.

Geoff Brooks won our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Trent & Mersey Canal with a weight of 4-8-0 of small roach, perch, and skimmers. Pip Woodier was in second place just an ounce lighter with 4-7-0.

Our Saturday Mersey Series have been discontinued until further notice, however the Sunday event
is still very much live and this week committee member Ade Green notched up another win with a weight of 6-10-0 made up of perch and roach caught using pole and maggot. In joint second place Roy Everson and Paul Harding fished the ground bait feeder to tie with 4-13-0.

Subscription reminders have been sent out over the past few days to members who have not as yet paid their 2017 subscription. Your stamped-up membership card is your receipt so if you think our records are incorrect please get in touch as soon as possible.

10th October 2017 Warrington Aglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Arley Reservoir, the middle one of the three lake Wigan area complex produced the goods last Friday for Del Chapman. With water levels well down due to maintenance works and the feeder stream pouring into the reservoir at a great rate on knots conditions were very different from normal, however on the plus side the incoming water was putting some colour into the water. Del  fished a feeder and maggot but only caught a suicidal perch every cast. Eventually after an hour a change of bait to a 10mm white boilie brought some real action as his tip shot round signalling that the bream had found his pellet mix of offerings. Casting between 40 to 50yards he caught eight bream, ranging from 4 to the biggest one at 7.5lbs. After a few 'last casts' he had to leave but an enjoyable four hours fishing which included the biggest fish he had caught from the water.

It's that time of the year again on the Bridgewater Canal when predator fishing starts to come into its own. Reports this week of some decent sized perch to soft lures and a few lower double pike have been caught. As the temperature drops and the clarity improves sport will only get better.

Keeping my ear to the ground I have heard whispers of a number of quality 'thirties' coming out of our small lake at Sandiway and nearer to home although not that size fair numbers of carp were caught last week from Grey Mist Mere. If members are 'publicity shy' it would still do no harm to let your committee know of catches as the information could shape our ongoing stocking policy.

Our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir fishery hosted the Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week. Despite a few DNW's local rod Alan Brown produced the goods with a mixed net of roach and crucians for 10-6-0. Another local rod John Mills took the runner-up spot with a weight 7-12-0. Back on the Trent & Mersey next week for a reality check.

Not my ideal type of fishing, but with bites very scarce on our Saturday Mersey Series due to heavy rain and high tide conditions Derek Bibby was more than happy to add ten slippery slimy small eels to his catch of the same number of roach for a winning weight of 2-10-0. He fished a heavy groundbait feeder and maggot as did second placed Ray Boden with 1-5-0.

A day later our Sunday Mersey match saw a rise in weights when Alan Morris added six skimmers, best a pound to a net of small roach for a winning weight of 6-7-0 taken on ground bait feeder and maggot. Derek Bibby was in the frame again with 5-12-0.

3rd October 2017 Warrington Anglers Guardian Column

3rd October, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Williams and his friend went to Budworth Mere on Saturday for a piking session but it didn't produce the result he was hoping for, in fact no action in 7 hours fishing on their four rods using methods found to be very productive on other waters. Their dead baits were taken, although not by anything with fins as several mink were bold enough to come up the bank in order to steal them. So, the big question is can any members throw any light on the pike situation on the Mere as both Tony and I would be very interested in any reports.

Catch reports around our Wigan fisheries are nothing to write home about and even on the normally productive Woodshaw Reservoir sport is up one day and down the next, although some locals seem to regularly find the fish. Let's see what happens next Monday when our Disabled & Over 60's try their luck on the venue. The gate to C & D Pools is at present locked by the farmer as he has cattle on the field and nobody I am sure would want their car paintwork licked by them. It is unbelievable the damage they can cause.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Predictably on this stretch weights were lower and local match ace Jimmy Byrne was the winner for the second week in succession with 3-2-6 made up of small roach and perch. The 'breadman' George Barber took the runner-up spot with 2-11-9.

Tuesday saw Ray Boden start the weeks match proceedings with yet another Mersey win with 8-4-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Dave Brooks wasn't too far behind in second place with 7-14-0 using the same method.

Two out of three isn't bad, yes Ray Boden backed up his Tuesday Series win and doubled the weight of the next angler to boot on our Saturday Mersey Series. He fished his usual pole and maggot tactics for a catch of three perch, one dace, and the rest roach for a weight of 11-5-0. Alan Morris in second place fished a ground bait feeder and maggot for 5-1-0. It is that time of the year when sport can be unpredictable.

Sunday's match saw Ray's protégé Ade Green take his fourth Mersey win this season from an unfavoured peg. He fished bolo and maggot for a weight of 9-4-0 of roach and perch with the majority being caught at the far end of his swim. Jimmy Byrnes took the runner-up spot and included a bonus 4lbs bream to add to his net of perch and roach for 8-12-0.
