30th May, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

It's not very often that we have any game reports but May Bank Holiday Monday was the exception when Chris Brookes who was fly-fishing on our stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury landed a salmon weighing 13lbs. This was Chris's second Dee salmon of the season and sport should get better following a few good downpours as forecast.

Aside from committee and bailiffs there was a disappointing turn out of volunteers for our working party at Appleton Reservoir on Saturday 27th May. After all the Facebook comments regarding reinstating night fishing only two of our younger members turned up to help, you know who you are so many thanks. We do not have obligatory working parties but as a member's club, run by the member, for the members I really would have expected better. If you are interested we have reinstated night fishing on a trial basis and whether or not it remains open is down to you….any litter yours or not take it home.

I visited Statham pool over the Bank Holiday and I have to say it looked stunning and as a bonus there has also been some decent catches reported. Last week Alan Morris certainly enjoyed his four hour fishing session on this pocket-sized water. Fishing the waggler and loose-feeding maggots he caught between 80-100 fish mostly small roach, some nice skimmer bream, plus bonus fish of a 3lb chub, 4lb bream, and finished off with 6lb common carp that really put a bend in his rod. Oh, and for the record I picked up several crisp packets on my visit….not mine because I hate 'salt & vinegar' but nevertheless as a responsible member I took it home to dispose of it……this is every member responsibility, not solely your committee and bailiffs.

The hot weather has put fish on many of our waters in the spawning mood and pegs where they were in action over the weekend were closed to fishing by bailiffs on site. It appears they were mainly carp, but no matter what the species anglers should not use pegs where fish are spawning, closed or not. It has been suggested that we shut fisheries completely but as species do not spawn in unison waters would be closed for a considerable period.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries. Please email catch details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
