15th September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Ian Wood took his five year old son Sammy to Ackers Pit last Saturday where not only did they enjoy the sunny warm weather but the youngster also caught loads of pristine roach with the icing on the cake a chunky crucian taken at the end of their session lasting a couple of hours. Young anglers are the very future of our sport and following a few notable catches and they are invariably hooked for life.
Tony Rough fished the River Dee at Shocklach on Sunday when after a quiet first hour he moved downstream a short distance of about 30metres and started getting bites on his first run down the swim. Trotting down with an Avon float feeding maggots and hemp with a bronze maggot on the hook accounted for fifteen grayling, nothing overly large but with fish to 1lb, ten trout, and lots of dace made for an enjoyable morning session. The only people he saw all morning were two passing canoeists.
Eric Smith enjoys his weekly assault on the Ciceley Mill crucians but this week he found himself in the auspicious company of Terence 'Fishless' Fletcher and Callum 'the boy wonder' Postill (Erics grandson). The fishing was once again good and Eric managed a couple of bream around the 3lb to 4lbs mark and crucians to just over 2lbs. Callum had a beautifully marked pike of 8lb mark which in effect kicked off his autumn pike fishing. Fishless only managed to land one of five fish hooked, but that was a nice crucian of over 2lbs with which he was more than happy as angler's expectations are all different.
Jimmy Gannon won our Saturday Mersey match with 14-12-0 made up of six skimmers, best 2lbs and the rest small roach and perch taken on legered maggot. Derek Bibby was in runner-up spot with 13-1-0 which included a bonus bream of 4lbs plus roach and perch all taken on pole and maggot. With two contrasting methods and either could have been the winner it makes for a more interesting match, in fact on the day all methods have had their share of wins.
Match organiser Ray Boden is another regular angler in the frame and this Sunday was no exception when he took the win with a nice net of roach and perch on pole and maggot for 9-12-0. Ant Higham was in second place with 8-7-0 which included five skimmers to 2.5lbs plus roach and perch taken on the tip and maggot.
Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane this and saw winner George Barber put together a net of skimmers and small roach on pole and bread punch for 4-15-8. George is in the frame regularly but this week he had over a 1lb to spare over week over local match ace Jimmy Byrne who came in second 3-10-8.
Our National Squad represented WAA on the River Trent last weekend in the Division 2 Nation Championship and maintained their previous year's position of second to last. The match in 2016 is on the Birmingham Canal.
