29th September 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

I was talking to several members this past week who although no names no pack drill reckon the big lake at Sandiway has been producing carp to mid-thirties and specimen tench to just under double figures. The small lake is surprisingly quiet despite being usually the most productive. I would really appreciate more reports on these fisheries if only to assess growth rates.

Chris Hodgson and his nephew Adam Hutchinson fished the Ribble last week and started off their session fishing the waggler and maggots to enjoy non-stop action with small chub, a few dace, gudgeon, and roach some of which were up to 1-10-0.  Towards the end of their session they put out their barbel rods and Adam caught his first ever barbel at 7-8-0. Three further barbel to 8lbs plus a chub of 5lbs followed to cap off an enjoyable days sport despite the healthy walk to the pegs.

Veteran match angler Derek Bibby won our Saturday Mersey match with 8-0-0 of skimmers and roach taken on pole and loose-fed maggot tactics. Jimmy Byrne was runner-up with an all roach catch of 6-3-0 using the same method. Only three ounces separated second, third, and fourth.

Our Mersey Championship winner on Sunday was Alan Morris with 5-4-0 of roach and perch taken on stick-float and loose-fed maggots. Phil Hancock had a spot of luck on his first Mersey match of the season when his only bite that came with twenty minutes to go turned out to be a bream of 4-12-0 which was enough for second place.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road this week and saw a new name appear with winner Keith Dentith weighing in a mixed net of roach and skimmers for 5-11-0 just topping Jimmy Byrne by an ounce. Jimmy was also the runner-up in last week's event and put similar catch for 5-10-0. Pole and punch was the method on the day.

22nd September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Sunday Tony Rough decided to change from his last week's successful Shocklach trip to our Worthenbury stretch and wasn't disappointed. He caught steadily all morning fishing the stick-float loose feeding maggots taking a succession of grayling and trout. A late change to the waggler fished against far bank willows resulted in a brace of chub around 2.5lbs in the last hour. It's sad the rivers are not fished more, and Tony reckons the fishing on the middle Dee especially for the grayling is outstanding, certainly worth a ten minute walk.

At long last Ade Green chalked up a win on our Saturday Mersey match with 14-10-0 of roach and perch taken on pole and loose-fed maggot tactics. Ray Boden was runner-up fishing the same method with 4-8-0. Weights were down generally on previous matches but that's the nature of our sport.

Our Sunday Mersey Series event was Ray Boden triumph for the second consecutive week with a catch of 7-14-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch taken on ground-bait feeder and maggot for 7-14-0. Derek Bibby fishing the same method missed out on the skimmers but nevertheless put together a nice net of roach and perch for 6-1-0.

Alert for members fishing at our Sandiway Lakes fisheries as a set line made up as a 'death rig' was found by a member. This is your fishery and we all have a duty to protect it so please report anything suspicious immediately and if there are persons involved ring the police immediately. Also members please note that access to the small lake via the track behind the bungalows is very muddy and only suitable during dry weather.

Similarly our Dee bailiff has asked me to warn members that the track to Worthenbury is really rough and absolute care should be taken. It is down to you to evaluate any risk to your vehicle as this is a multi-usage farm track subject to flooding.

15th September 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ian Wood took his five year old son Sammy to Ackers Pit last Saturday where not only did they enjoy the sunny warm weather but the youngster also caught loads of pristine roach with the icing on the cake a chunky crucian taken at the end of their session lasting a couple of hours. Young anglers are the very future of our sport and following a few notable catches and they are invariably hooked for life.

Tony Rough fished the River Dee at Shocklach on Sunday when after a quiet first hour he moved downstream a short distance of about 30metres and started getting bites on his first run down the swim. Trotting down with an Avon float feeding maggots and hemp with a bronze maggot on the hook accounted for fifteen grayling, nothing overly large but with fish to 1lb, ten trout, and lots of dace made for an enjoyable morning session. The only people he saw all morning were two passing canoeists.

Eric Smith enjoys his weekly assault on the Ciceley Mill crucians but this week he found himself in the auspicious company of Terence 'Fishless' Fletcher and Callum 'the boy wonder' Postill (Erics grandson). The fishing was once again good and Eric managed  a couple of bream around the 3lb to 4lbs mark and crucians to just over 2lbs. Callum had a beautifully marked pike of 8lb mark which in effect kicked off his autumn pike fishing. Fishless only managed to land one of five fish hooked, but that was a nice crucian of over 2lbs with which he was more than happy as angler's expectations are all different.

Jimmy Gannon won our Saturday Mersey match with 14-12-0 made up of six skimmers, best 2lbs and the rest small roach and perch taken on legered maggot. Derek Bibby was in runner-up spot with 13-1-0 which included a bonus bream of 4lbs plus roach and perch all taken on pole and maggot. With two contrasting methods and either could have been the winner it makes for a more interesting match, in fact on the day all methods have had their share of wins.

Match organiser Ray Boden is another regular angler in the frame and this Sunday was no exception when he took the win with a nice net of roach and perch on pole and maggot for 9-12-0. Ant Higham was in second place with 8-7-0 which included five skimmers to 2.5lbs plus roach and perch taken on the tip and maggot.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane this and saw winner George Barber put together a net of skimmers and small roach on pole and bread punch for 4-15-8. George is in the frame regularly but this week he had over a 1lb to spare over week over local match ace Jimmy Byrne who came in second 3-10-8.

Our National Squad represented WAA on the River Trent last weekend in the Division 2 Nation Championship and maintained their previous year's position of second to last. The match in 2016 is on the Birmingham Canal.

8th September 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Tim Slough took his two sons James 15years and Sam 11years for an evening session on High Legh Fisheries on Tuesday evening for a couple of hours. Targeting the bigger fish they fed micro-pellets just over the lily pads and float-fished with corn or luncheon meat on the hook. The swim was soon bubbling with fish. The result was carp in the 4lbs bracket that totally ignored the corn offerings but not so the meat. Tim reports that the fish were in prime condition and had a variety of colouring ranging from a golden bronze to quite pale specimens. The fish were originally stocked from netting operations on the Ocean Fishery. The repeated flash of iridescent blue from a kingfisher hunting his supper made it a perfect evening.

Eric Smith was on Ciceley Mill Pool (again) on Sunday but on this occasion was accompanied by his grandson Callum Postill 13years who was on a quest to beat his previous crucian best of 1-9-0 and that is just what happened. Callum's first fish was 3lbs bream taken on his first cast and after a blank period of almost an hour he followed this with a crucian of 1-11-0 and soon bettered this with another PB of 1-14-0 but his grandfather according to Callum fluked his fish possibly due to the biggest weighing in 2-5-0. Both used method feeder tactics spraying in hemp in the swim and two dead red maggots on the hook.

Alan Morris notched up his first Mersey match win on Saturday with a bonus bream of 4lbs taken on legered maggot plus a couple of pounds of dace and roach taken on stick-float and the same bait for a total of 6-4-0. Alan Birchall was in runner-up spot with a similar net of fish using the same methods for 5-10-0.

Match veteran Derek Bibby headed the field on Sundays Mersey match with a nice net of roach, dace, and chub taken on pole and maggot. Derek weighed 8-1-0 and had almost a 2lbs margin over second placed Dave Hill who fished a stick-float and maggot for 6-3-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was back on the Bridgewater Canal this week and fished at Moore. Weights were down but Derek Bibby fished the pole and maggot for a mixed net for 3-5-12 notching up another first place following his success on the Mersey the previous day. Jimmy Byrne was second with 2-10-0.

Many thanks to the volunteers who turned up for the weed removal working party at Grey Mist Mere on Saturday. There are those who talk the talk and others who simply address the problem and get stuck in. They removed tons of weed using our boat and beefed up weed rake. Particular thanks to the two youngsters who also gave up their time to help. We are consulting with the Environment Agency on various lines of attack on the problem.

1st September 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Joel Rees-Jones had an evening session to remember for all the right reasons on our stretch of the Ribble at Hurst Green on last Friday evening. He had nine barbel including a fist double figure fish and also a new PB of 10-3-0. He also included in his catch three chub all over 4lbs. A very happy member.

And a report from member Neil Plunkett who having a rest from his double figure barbel quest enjoyed a confidence booster session on Rixton Claypits where he caught eighteen bream ranging from 1 to 3lbs. All fell for 6mm halibut and dampened halibut micro pellets and despite trying other baits and combinations that failed to entice a single enquiry. Back to the barbel hunt now Neil.

Eric Smith was back on Ciceley Mill Pool last week where his visit on Thursday produced a tench and a bream, both over 3lbs plus four quality crucians. The following day on the same venue he started his session off again with a tench followed by six bream several of which were in the 4 to 5lbs, plus nine crucians. After a day's rest (to cut the lawns) he returned to the fishery again on Sunday catching six bream and fourteen crucians with the best at 1-12-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the River Mersey this week and saw Alan Brown win with a net of roach and perch for 5-8-8 just edging out Jimmy Byrne who was a couple of fish short on 5-5-0 who had a similar catch that included a bonus skimmer bream.

Mersey match winner this past Saturday was Jimmy Byrne with seven skimmers and three bream to 7-4-0 making a total net of 17-10-0. All fish were taken on the tip using groundbait feeder and alternating between maggot and worm. Just a skimmer short of challenging Jimmy for first place was Martin Lenihan who had six skimmers and three bream for a weight of 17-6-0 using the same method.

On Sundays Mersey event despite weights being much lower than the previous day Roy Everson on his first visit to the match this season initially fished the tip to net three small skimmers but changed over to bolognaise when his swim went quiet to add roach, perch, and dace for a winning weight of 6-5-0. Martin Lenihan took another second place in as many days with 5-12-0 of roach, perch, and dace taken using pole tactics and maggot.
