24th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Alan Davenport visited Grey Mist Mere and as usual some irresponsible member had left the barrier open, if caught it will be case of ex-member. This aside it did not affect Alan's sport because taking a mobile approach he had two pike on float-fished lamprey and another on a shallow diving lure. The fish were all between six and eight pounds but to catch them he fished all swims virtually with the exception of two. The week previous he fished on the River Dane with his father and between them they managed four chub up to 3lb 8oz and also a brown trout and a grayling. The fish were suckers for Alan's home-made cheese paste, even the trout and grayling.

Eric Smith was awake all Monday night with raging toothache. By early morning after trying painkillers he had the idea that a spot of fishing just might take his mind off his aching tooth, so off he went for a short session on the Bridgewater Canal at Trafford Park before his afternoon shift. Perch were the target and he took a few lobworms and a pint of dead maggots and set up a light float rig fished with a lob as hook bait and the maggots fed little and often. The session produced only two fish, both roach weighing 1-11-0 and 1-13-0 and would you believe it toothache cured.

Just over a week ago Glynn Jones made the 200 mile journey up to the River Alyn and was rewarded with some good sized dace, chub, and some grayling from the deeper runs throughout the stretch. He even added some nice brownies that muscled in and took his trotted maggots. This venue is always worth a visit even when the main river is carrying extra water as the fish take cover from the main current.

When Gareth Evans visited a muddy and chocolate coloured Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Lane on Friday it didn't at first glance look too appetising but he was soon into fish. A bonus was that the wind was on his back all day making the fishing comfortable add to this the fact he found all his fish at three metres and it boils down to a very pleasurable days sport. Using only bread punch he caught skimmers, decent roach, and a stunner of a perch that needed subduing with a pulla bung, a first for Gavin.

Seven pairs graced the bank of the Trent & Mersey Canal at Barnton on our pairs match the following day and sport couldn't have been more different, in fact it was described as 'patchy at best'. Winner Jon Andrews made the most of his end peg draw and had a mixed net of skimmers, roach, and perch for 6-6-8. Jeff Shaw was runner-up with 4-9-12. Leading pair on the day was Jeff Shaw and Bob Clough with six points.

Snippets: - It looks like a couple of the newly stocked fish carp been already caught so I expect it will not be too long before they are named. Also at the Mist good numbers of unseasonal tench fooled by the warmer weather are being caught. Saturday Sweepstake on the Mersey was cancelled this week due to a heavily flooded river but the Sunday match went ahead and was won by Derek Bibby with a skimmer and two roach for 13oz, but it is business as usual next week weather permitting.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.
