4th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The second round of the Cheshire Spring League was fished on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green following a heavy frost (it is degrees colder in Congleton). However all members managed a few bites but last week’s winner Bob Campbell drew another end peg and clocked up his second win with 4-0-15 of bread punch caught roach. Adam Harman on the next peg was just a shade over 2ozs short of the winner but took runner-up spot with 3-14-10. Mike Dench included a perch of 2lbs plus a few roach for third place. A long way to go yet but with a perfect point score Bob is heading the leader board with 2 points.

With the coarse fish close season on rivers kicking in from the 15th March to 15th June inclusive this Sunday is the last hoorah for our Mersey Sunday Series devotees. Hopefully the river will produce some stunning sport for our match this weekend. Weights were low again and after an hour bites were few and far between so another grueller looked to be on the cards. Matters were not helped by a 10metre tide slap bang in the middle of the match that saw most anglers rapidly moving their tackle to the safety of higher ground. Jimmy Byrne had been catching a few small roach but after the tidal ebb Eddie Frangleton started to pick up a few more  fish with the end result that his 2-4-14 relegated Jimmy into second place. Messrs Everson and Bowden are still both on seven wins apiece so it’s going to the wire but Betfred is not taking any more bets!

Bud Lee had over a pound to spare over his nearest rival on our Disabled & Over 60’s match when he put 5-12-8 of bread caught small roach and skimmers on the scales pushing match ace Jimmy Byrne into second place with 4-6-14 taken on pinkie. Fished between the Toast Rack and Houghs Bridges there were lots of fish caught and also quite a few snatched and lost to marauding pike.  Geoff Brooks who was catching well in the match saw a youngster visibly upset as he had dropped his scarf into the canal and always the Good Samaritan he offered the father the use of his landing net. As the clothing item was being retrieved some distance away Geoff hooked into a really good sized bream which caused £ signs to dance before his eyes. He skilfully played, and played, and played the large fish because he desperately needed that net. Just as the net was back within reach the fish made one last lunge and freedom. Geoff managed his section as a consolation but I very much doubt the truth of the ugly rumour that some fellow anglers actually thanked the lad’s father. Anyway, well done Geoff you are a credit to your sport.

Last week Alan Davenport visited our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery where using waggler tactics with bread punch and feeding liquidised bread he caught around 10lbs of roach and chub that were around the pound mark. Roach averaged 3oz with the odd fish ranging between 6 and 8oz.  Alan has starting from this week set himself a quest of fishing all of our waters, all previous visits don’t count so he is starting from scratch. This week he fished the Mersey for pike having never previously targeted predators on the river and bingo his first success, only a small fish but target met.
