28th January 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th January 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

If you missed the working party on Moore Quarry two weeks ago here is another chance to get involved this weekend. Meet Sunday, 10am on the car park.

The Mount at Buckley has attracted a large number of members since the fishery was completely turned around a couple of years ago with quite a large introduction of carp. It changed overnight from a hard water to one where excellent sport is now taken for granted due to the fact that the resident fish must now compete for their food. However some anglers forget that seasonal weather changes will effect sport such as the present crystal clear water conditions when approaches need modifying to suit.

Phil Hancock was back on the venue again this week when he stuck to his successful small maggot feeder approach. It was a slow start but regular feeding with reduced amounts of bait and the fish eventually latched onto his offerings. When they did it was quite literally a bite a chuck with a roach or a perch every cast. Occasional carp are feeding and Phil witnessed a fellow member land one that was possibly a mid-double.

There was a different approach to our popular Mersey Series on Sunday when the match was changed into a rover. A new winner, Pete Jones took the laurels (and the money). He fished a groundbait feeder from peg 68 to include a couple of hybrids in his catch for 3-5-0. It was nice to see match co-organiser Ant Higham with 1-9-0 collect some coin from runner-up spot as unlike his mate Paul Harding he has really struggled so far this year. Both put in a lot of effort throughout the year to make matches on the Mersey happen, and it doesn’t stop on the 15th March as then the work starts, repairing pegs etc. Please note there no match this Sunday due to exceptional high tides.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match on the Bridgewater Canal saw well known veteran angler Danny Sixsmith have a comfortable win on his first outing in this popular series. He put a mixed net on the scales for 5-2-8 almost doubling the weight of runner-up George Barber on 2-10-10. And nice to see the match organiser John Dagnall strike lucky again with a section win.

It didn’t take too long for Martin Griffiths who only started a new Saturday series on the Bridgewater last week to notch up a win. Fished at Lymm Village again he put a superb mixed net on the scales for 8-11-10 closely followed by Ste Hirst with 7-0-2.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

21st January 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The smaller of our two Association-owned lakes at Sandiway at 17.5 acres was successfully stocked with 100 mainly mirror carp on Saturday afternoon. The ten volunteers who turned up were kept busy photographing, weighing, and carrying the stunning looking fish to the three waiting members who came kitted up with chest waders. I think the latter possibly drew the short straw but they were uncomplaining as they stood in the freezing water oblivious to the numbing cold totally engrossed in ensuring all fish swam away safely. The VS Fisheries bred carp ranged from around 6.5lbs to just over 8lbs and should pack on weight in their new home. Full range of pictures will be on our website.
Sunday saw an equally good turnout to the advertised working party at Moore Quarry where the teams removed overgrown and self-seeded trees to greatly improve access to fishing areas. Likewise the three members who are qualified divers worked tirelessly all day removing underwater snags such as sunken trees and rigs. It certainly was a cracking start and there is still a long way to go but if anyone is interested there is another chance to get involved on Sunday 2nd February. Meet 10am on car park.
Phil Hancock fished The Mount at Buckley on Thursday where he used a small maggot feeder to tempt thirty to forty perch and roach. The roach averaged 4ozs with a few around the pound mark but the best perch was 1.5lbs.
Another hard match on the Mersey on Sunday where conditions were far from good, the river was towing through, and a dirty brown in colour. The first three anglers finished in exactly the same positions as they did last week, so it was Paul Harding making it two wins in a row, with a weight of, 1-0-10 of small roach taken on a groundbait feeder from peg 51. And so ended another forgettable session! Can it really get any worse?
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge saw Lenny Dutton back in the frame with a mixed net for 3-10-0 followed by Bud Lea on 3-5-4.
Martin Griffiths has started a new series on a Saturday on the Bridgewater and the first match on Saturday pegged in Lymm Village started off with a string of cracking winter roach catches. Young rod, Adam Harman put his winning net of roach onto the scales to record 11-5-0 to see him with a comfortable buffer of just over 2.5lbs over runner-up Phil Cross on 8-10-0.

14th January 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th January 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Again this week there was not much of an improvement to the fishing conditions on our River Mersey Series as an overnight frost, extra water and a dirty colour to boot ensured that weights were down. Paul Harding beat Roy Everson into second place by the narrowest of margins and both had six fish apiece caught on groundbait feeder tactics. Only 3 anglers managed to weigh in what everyone hopes is a forgettable session.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal also suffered from adverse conditions and although match ace George Barber put together a winning weight of 3-7-12 those following were several pounds adrift with Trevor Bainbridge retaining his previous week's runner-up position with 1-2-8 and then it was down to ounces. Notably match organiser John Dagnall was a happy man as he managed to get in the money with a section win edging out Lenny Dutton.

Pike are active on most fisheries but Phoenix Park is the place to go for almost guaranteed action. Ian Cunliffe reports catching a brace on dead bait from the Moore area weighing in at 14-8-0 and 12-4-0.

If anyone is interested in helping we have managed to obtain a boost stocking of 100 VS carp for the small lake at Sandiway. I understand that they are in the 6.5lbs plus bracket and should grow well in this fishery. Hope to see you there around 10-30am (bring a pair of chest waders)!

There is a working party at Moore Quarry on this Sunday 19th January when members will be opening up and clearing swims. If you have loppers, a bow saw and gloves bring them along Meet 10am on the car park.

I viewed a really interesting impromptu video taken this month on 'one of our fisheries' by a member who bored with little happening in his swim lashed an underwater camera to a 6ft landing net pole. The results were mind blowing and all I will say is if you are on WAA Facebook Group it is compulsive viewing. Nothing doing …. Don't you believe it!

WAA weekly column - 7th January

The vast majority of our river fisheries were bank high and unfishable this past week and as a consequence in the interests of angler safety our regular Mersey event was cancelled on Sunday for the first time during this current coarse season.  Weather permitting the draw on Sunday will be 9am at Mersey Walk.
However there were a few exceptions and the River Dane at Holmes Chapel has produced some good sized grayling and a few chub for those mad enough to brave the conditions. Legered maggot was the most productive method.
Our Disabled & Over 60’s match on the last Monday of 2013 was won by match organiser John Dagnall who saw the old year out with his first win of the season. He had a perch of 1.5lbs in his winning net of 2-12-10 to take the main prize money. John’s arch rival Lenny (end peg) Dutton who was on the next peg came fourth.
This week the first match of 2014 match saw committee member Graham Belton claim his first win of the year seeing the New Year in with 3-0-12 followed by George Barber sporting a new feather in his famous hat on 2-13-10.  To prove that you can’t keep a good man down Lennie was again in the money taking third place.
Grey Mist Mere is worth a visit for some predator action and also the odd carp are being caught Phoenix Park has also been producing reasonable sport with single figure pike.
A disturbing development reported by one of our bailiffs is the discovery of a number of pike lying dead on the towpath of the Sankey St Helens Canal. Those who carry out such sickening acts are despicable. Unfortunately in this medium I cannot use the descriptive words that immediately came to mind but suffice to say if found the culprit(s) will be named and shamed. Any information on this matter will be treated in the strictest confidence.
