24th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Alan Davenport visited Grey Mist Mere and as usual some irresponsible member had left the barrier open, if caught it will be case of ex-member. This aside it did not affect Alan's sport because taking a mobile approach he had two pike on float-fished lamprey and another on a shallow diving lure. The fish were all between six and eight pounds but to catch them he fished all swims virtually with the exception of two. The week previous he fished on the River Dane with his father and between them they managed four chub up to 3lb 8oz and also a brown trout and a grayling. The fish were suckers for Alan's home-made cheese paste, even the trout and grayling.

Eric Smith was awake all Monday night with raging toothache. By early morning after trying painkillers he had the idea that a spot of fishing just might take his mind off his aching tooth, so off he went for a short session on the Bridgewater Canal at Trafford Park before his afternoon shift. Perch were the target and he took a few lobworms and a pint of dead maggots and set up a light float rig fished with a lob as hook bait and the maggots fed little and often. The session produced only two fish, both roach weighing 1-11-0 and 1-13-0 and would you believe it toothache cured.

Just over a week ago Glynn Jones made the 200 mile journey up to the River Alyn and was rewarded with some good sized dace, chub, and some grayling from the deeper runs throughout the stretch. He even added some nice brownies that muscled in and took his trotted maggots. This venue is always worth a visit even when the main river is carrying extra water as the fish take cover from the main current.

When Gareth Evans visited a muddy and chocolate coloured Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Lane on Friday it didn't at first glance look too appetising but he was soon into fish. A bonus was that the wind was on his back all day making the fishing comfortable add to this the fact he found all his fish at three metres and it boils down to a very pleasurable days sport. Using only bread punch he caught skimmers, decent roach, and a stunner of a perch that needed subduing with a pulla bung, a first for Gavin.

Seven pairs graced the bank of the Trent & Mersey Canal at Barnton on our pairs match the following day and sport couldn't have been more different, in fact it was described as 'patchy at best'. Winner Jon Andrews made the most of his end peg draw and had a mixed net of skimmers, roach, and perch for 6-6-8. Jeff Shaw was runner-up with 4-9-12. Leading pair on the day was Jeff Shaw and Bob Clough with six points.

Snippets: - It looks like a couple of the newly stocked fish carp been already caught so I expect it will not be too long before they are named. Also at the Mist good numbers of unseasonal tench fooled by the warmer weather are being caught. Saturday Sweepstake on the Mersey was cancelled this week due to a heavily flooded river but the Sunday match went ahead and was won by Derek Bibby with a skimmer and two roach for 13oz, but it is business as usual next week weather permitting.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.

16th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Warrington Anglers Association carp stocking of last Friday saw ten V S Fishery C5 mirror carp averaging just over 15.5lbs released into Grey Mist Mere, Moore Quarry received five C5's plus a C4 common, Sandiway Lake (large) fifteen C6 mirrors averaging over 21lbs plus five C5 fish. The small lake was the last to be stocked with thirty C4's. All the pictures and weights will eventually be on our member's area of our website, however a number are currently on our Facebook page. No names mentioned as you know who you are but many thanks to our member volunteers who played their part helping to stock the fish, those in the water on the 'release team' were blue with cold but reckoned that it was worth all the pain and suffering. I must admit that someone knowingly giving their friend a pair of leaky waders was beyond the pale, so Paul watch your back!

Mike Williams visited our Buttington stretch of the River Severn last week and despite a torturous walk to get to the water as the track was almost impassable to motor vehicles he was well rewarded with his first barbel. The fish was taken on legered hair-rigged luncheon meat over a bed of free offerings and weighed in at 8-15-0. To quote Mike, "It was quite an experience on the centre pin." I'll bet!

We are looking for members who would be interested in attending a volunteer day at Appleton Reservoir to help in the control of Himalayan Balsam. The increase in Himalayan balsam at the site case been flagged up by the United Utilities ecologist who is looking to arrange a day to remove this invasive alien species from the site. If we had enough volunteers we could perhaps couple this with installing the night fishing peg markers. Please email or phone me your details if you would like to be involved.

Our Saturday Sweepstake was won by match organiser Ray Boden who suffered a barren three hours or so and in fact the match looked like being abandoned until Derek Bibby caught a half ounce perch, then it was game on. Ray had two fish a bonus bream of 3-10-0 and an 8oz roach but the combined 4-2-0 was enough to take the money. Runner-up was Derek Bibby with 2-15-3.

The following day at our Mersey Sunday Series match it was the same names in the top two places but reversed as Derek Bibby put together a catch of two bream, skimmers, hybrids, and roach for a weight of 11-14-0. Ray Boden was back in his most frequent position as runner-up with 6-10-0.

Catch reports are really scarce at the moment so please drop me an email to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk with anything of interest, or you can ring me on 01928 716238. 9th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Friday we will be stocking carp from VS Fisheries into our Association owned waters of Grey Mist Mere, Rixton Claypits, and Sandiway Lakes. So popular are the strains of fish supplied by this company that to be certain of getting fish our orders are made usually around two years in advance. C4's are destined for Sandiway small Lake and C6's for the larger fishery with a batch of C5's for Moore Quarry and Grey Mist Mere. We are starting at Grey Mist Mere between 10-30 and 11am dependant on traffic conditions. As usual members who wish to attend/help are more than welcome.

Again on the carp scene there is not generally too much action at present but bucking the trend is our bailiff Daz who fishes The Mount at Buckley. In the past week or so he has caught forty seven fish to upper doubles using either boilies or corn and feeding small samples in a mesh PVA bag. Worth a visit as the fishery also produces some stunning roach over the magical 2lbs mark, quality tench, and bream.

Our Pairs Series organised by Geoff Stoll was fished this week on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green following a hard overnight frost and saw the individual win taken by Bob Clough with 4-7-0 followed by Phil Cross with 2-15-11.  Graham Belton and his partner in crime George Barber now have two Pairs points wins under their belt, this week with 4 to add to the perfect score of 2 the previous week.

Weights were down again this week on our Saturday Sweepstake match which was won for the second week in succession by Jimmy Byrne with a net made up of a bonus 10oz perch plus small roach for 2-2-0. Derek Bibby was second with an all roach catch for 1-14-0.

Jimmy Gannon who was third on the river the previous day won our Mersey Sunday Series match taking a bonus 1lb skimmer backed up by small roach taken on punched bread for a combined weight of 4-2-0. Martin Lenihan missed out on any bonus fish but was in the runner-up spot with an all roach catch taken on maggot for 3-7-0.

As the colder unsettled weather continues our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was again a struggle for most anglers. Roach dominated the top two weights with an all perch net also in the frame. Alan Brown was the winner with 3-12-0 followed by Lenny Dutton with 2-11-12.

2nd December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd December 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

There is a first time for everything and the angler playing a pike outside my front window on Monday morning was surprised to have his catch witnessed by the secretary clad in his dressing gown. Yes, I was catching up on my emails and was having a leisurely breakfast when my wife spotted Paul Ahmed playing the fish and I just couldn't resist. The fish was only a small jack but Paul and his mate Nick Smith were targeting perch using small jigs that had accounted for a number of small fish, the best taken by Nick at 1.5lbs. They ended the day with three more pike.

Gareth Evans and his mate Ian Jones fished the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook on Saturday near Waters Meet. The colour had dropped out of the canal but according to Gareth the clear conditions didn't hinder the fishing one bit. They both had nice nets of bream, skimmers, perch, and roach. Everything was caught mainly on maggot or pinkie with the odd fish to 4mm expander pellets over groundbait. Ian reckoned that he had a better stamp of fish without using groundbait and fished his swim over a bed of hemp and loose feeding maggots. You can see the catch shots at www.fishinginthenorthwest.co.uk/.

A leak was found on the Trent and Mersey Canal on Friday between bridges 211 and 212 at Dutton. The Canal and River Trust were on the case immediately and had to carry out an immediate draw down of the water to reduce pressure at the site. Stop planks were put in at the bridges and they carried out a successful fish rescue with fish being released at both ends of the affected length. There were some cracking specimens of bream, chub, etc. and an eel that our members of the Anguilla club would die for. It just shows how quickly the length has recovered from the previous breach in October 2012.

Our Saturday Sweepstake match was won this week by Jimmy Byrne with a net made up of three skimmers and roach for 8-4-0. Ade Green was the runner-up with a similar net of fish but was a skimmer light for 7-8-0. Most fish were caught on the tip with groundbait feeder and maggot but the pole came into play on some pegs.

Neil Davies set his stall out on the pole at our Mersey Sunday Series match taking a mixed net of perch and roach on maggot to win the event with 7-1-8. It was a close run thing from then on but Derek Bibby took the second place and put his faith on the tip and groundbait feeder method to catch dace and roach for 5-12-0.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was dire as weights plummeted due to the colder weather. Jimmy Byrne took the win with 1-15-4 followed by Keith Wernham on 1-11-12. There were a good number of dry nets and 'did not weighs' but spirits amongst the regulars were undaunted and even Vice President Geoff Brooks tried to spice up the proceedings with a trip, dive, and forward roll just narrowly missing the water which would have given him full points.

25th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Derek Bibby was the winner of our Mersey Saturday Sweepstake with 6-8-0 which included two skimmers and roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Match organiser Ray Boden was back in his usual position in second place with an all roach net for 3-5-0.

Thirty seven members turned out the following day for our annual Mersey Fur & Feather and true to form the river was out of sorts carrying extra water and coloured. However this did not deter Derek Bibby who added another win in some style to that of the previous day with a net of seven bream for an impressive 38-11-0. Derek drew peg 45 and fished a groundbait feeder and maggot. Runner-up Martin Griffiths fished the same method from peg 33 in the Park and had five bream in his catch of 21-3-0. Karl Guy didn't feature in the main prizes but was the lucky winner of a Drennan rod donated by Stu Conroy plus a meat voucher donated by his wife for drawing 'golden peg 67' which Stu built in memory of his dog. Special thanks must go to Cheshire Angling for running the event and managing to source enough prizes from the WAA donation. Thanks also to others who donated and helped to make the event a success. All anglers managed to snare a prize, even the non-weighers.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held at Hough's Bridge and Dead Length and it was pretty dire with weights down to ounces. Match stalwart George Barber managed to find a few fish and put 2-10-10 on the scales to take the win. Graham Belton was second with 1-15-4.

18th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Steve Ellis reports a catch of bream and quality roach from Worthington Lakes where he fished a small groundbait feeder on Arley and alternated between maggot and small red worms. The bream went to 3lbs and the roach were chunky and around the 10oz mark. Virtually all of the catches from this complex have come from this fishery but hardly anything from Adlington and even less from Worthington Reservoir.

Ivan Goodier fished the Mount at Buckley for the first time last Wednesday and lost two good fish on the pole before changing over to a feeder fished against the far bank to suffer a similar fate until finally he landed a carp of 14-12-0. The fish took home rolled boilies and was followed by three further fish of 10-8-0, 8-0-0, and a tench of about 3lbs.

Ray Boden our match organiser of the Saturday Mersey Sweepstake won in convincing style with over 13lbs to spare with 19-11-0 of bream, skimmers, and roach. Ray fished the tip and his biggest bream weighed 5lbs. Norman Gannon was runner-up fishing the same method with 6-9-0 that included two bream for 6lbs.

The Mersey on Sunday was a far more fish friendly place to be than last week when anglers then struggled for bites. The winner on Sunday from peg 29 was Jimmy Byrne with 15-4-8 of bream, skimmers, and roach taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. A single skimmer could have changed things as Derek Bibby finished in second place with 14-3-9 alternating between the tip and pole methods for a similar catch. It was good to see co-match organiser Paul Harding who spends more time on the river than anyone draw some coin despite losing two slabs at the net. Last chance today for members to get a ticket for our annual Fur and Feather match on Sunday from Cheshire Angling. Paid up membership cards must be produced.

11th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our Saturday Mersey Sweepstake saw Derek Bibby take the top money in this week's match with an amazing weight of 23-0-0 which totally eclipsed all others. He fished started off on the tip and was rewarded with four bream for 15lbs the best weighing 5lbs, but a change to the pole saw him add another 8lbs of roach which alone would easily have won him the match. Tip specialist Jimmy Gannon was in second place but without any big bream in his net he put 4-15-0 of skimmers on the scales.

Following the recent heavy rain the Mersey on Sunday was coloured and had some extra pace making bites few and far between. Ray Bowden who usually fishes on the pole had a rare session on the feeder on peg 73 where he put together a net made up of a small bream, skimmers, and a few roach to win our Sunday Series match with 4-13-13. Also on the feeder was second placed Eddie Frangleton who put a similar catch of 4-1-0 on the scales. Match co-organiser Ant Higham was in the money when he won his section with three bootlace eels, a roach and small hybrid for 0-8-12 which must go down as the lowest weight of the year so far!  Please note that any member wishing to fish the annual Fur and Feather match on the 23rd of this month that the tickets are now available at Cheshire Angling. Paid up membership cards must be produced.

Many thanks to our team of volunteers who introduced two tons micro-chalk into Offa's Dyke to hopefully improve the conditions on the older pool which has suffered badly from siltation and algal /weed growth. One of the members made the job easier when he turned up with his collapsible bote (yes that is what it is called), complete with outboard motor which acted like a giant food whisk to help spread the material. Nevertheless it took a good three and a half hours with everyone at the end looking as though they had been covered in icing sugar. We have fish on order for the three pools.

4th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th November 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ewan Price reports a good roach session on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green where he fished maggot on the pole catching fish around the 6oz mark. A change to caster later in the session saw the stamp of fish improve with some nudging the 1lb mark. He also had two perch of around 2.5lbs and lost an even bigger fish at the net when it slipped the hook.

The Saturday Mersey Sweepstake saw Jimmy Byrne slip another win under his belt with a pole performance which netted him an all roach catch of 9-7-0. Ray Bowden shied away from his usual pole tactics and was runner-up with 7-2-0 caught on the tip which included a couple of bonus 2lb skimmers plus roach and perch. Those chub are growing fast and Alan Morris had a couple around the 1lb mark which looks promising for future sport.

This week's Mersey Sunday Series saw Cadishead rod Pete jones go home very happy after taking his first win of the season. He gave a master class display of waggler fishing from end peg 12 and put a mixed net of chub, perch and roach on the scales .for 7-4-0. Pete went home with his flask still full of tea as he never even had time to pour himself a brew, now that's a good session. Ray Bowden pushed Pete all the way to claim his second runner-up position of the weekend and caught all his 6-14-11 on the pole. The first three anglers were all on the float, the waggler, pole, and bolognaise.

Marginally better results this week in our Disabled & Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal which saw Jimmy Byrne claim the top spot with a mixed net weighing 5-1-4. Runner-up was George Barber with all the fours 4-4-4.

Please note that non-members are not allowed to visit anglers on our private access fisheries under any circumstances. Some have been checked bringing food to anglers or just dropping by for a chat. 28th October 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th October 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

It is not too often that I receive reports from Association owned Wide Hole situated on the offside of the Macclesfield Canal at Poynton. It is an offline fish refuge from the boat traffic during the summer months but at this time of year it is noted for its pike action. Nick Jones enjoyed some hectic sport catching eleven pike, nothing massive with the best at 11-8-0 but enjoyable all the same.

Bob Saunders enjoyed a good bream and roach session at Worthington Lakes on Monday where he fished a small groundbait feeder and double maggot to catch eight bream between 2 and 3lbs plus a good number of roach in the 8 to 12oz bracket. Carp are conspicuous by their absence with just the occasional fish reported.

This week's Saturday Mersey Sweepstake was an all tip affair which suited the winner Jimmy Gannon who put together a bonus 3lbs bream and skimmer net weighing in at 10-6-0. For the record his brother Norman came in at third and according to my information they have a massive 148 years angling experience between them. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with a similar catch to the winner for 9-5-0.

Windy conditions and a clear river had an adverse effect on weights during this week's Mersey Sunday Series. Martin Lenihan however made the most of his end peg 70 draw to catch a winning net of small skimmers and roach on a groundbait feeder and bronze maggot of 7-12-12. Derek Bibby fished the pole on peg 47 to take a mixed net of roach and perch for 5-9-0. This week match co-organiser Ant Higham managed to collect some coin as opposed to being a regular contributor.

Bites were really hard to come by on Monday in our popular Disabled & Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal, but as the saying goes, 'when the going is hard the tough get going' which saw Lenny Dutton take first place with a lowly 2-15-0. The conditions also suited our match organiser John Dagnall who was in runner-up spot with 2-5-6.

Please note that any members wishing to fish the popular Pairs Series need to book on now with either Jeff Stoll or Cheshire Angling.

21st October 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st October 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ian Carter reports having a good roach session on Sunday on Phoenix Park Lake fishing the pole at 10metres. He loose fed maggot and tiny pellets of groundbait to have the fish virtually crawling up his rod. Included in his estimated 20lbs catch was a couple of skimmers and a tench of around 3lbs. Members tend to think of this as a carp or pike fishery but whenever we hold our annual youngsters coaching teach-in everyone catches. Definitely worth a visit as this mixed fishery contains a good head of fish whatever your preference.

Winner of this week's Mersey Sweepstake on Saturday was Derek Bibby with 10-2-0 made up of two skimmers around 1.5lbs apiece plus 7lbs of roach and perch. However it was not all easy going for Derek as two hours into the match he struck into a fish and snapped his pole and had to improvise forcing him to move from his 13metre line where the fish were feeding to 11metres but luckily the fished followed. Jimmy Byrne was second with a catch of six skimmers and fifteen roach for 8lbs.

There were better weights this week on our Mersey Sunday Series and Jimmy Byrne maintained his winning streak putting 14-13-0 on the scales from an end peg 34 that gave him over a 5lbs margin. He had been catching roach and perch steadily at a comfortable 9metres when he decided to have a go on his tip rod. Bingo, first cast a 5lbs bream. The rest of the anglers were from that point on fishing for second place which surprise surprise was taken up by Ray Bowden who has had more second places this year than anyone I know. Ray mixed his normal pole tactics with a spell on the bolognaise for 9-2-0 from the other end peg 19.

A change of venue from the Bridgewater Canal to the Mersey saw weights drop in this weeks Disabled & Over 60's Match. Jimmy Byrne was in the money again taking the winners spot with 9-5-8 followed in second place by Jimmy Gannon with a net of 5-14-12. It was good to see veteran Stan Deakin dust off his greenheart rod and make the frame in fourth spot. A pair of trolley handles were found on the pavement near St Johns School obviously left by someone fishing the river when they loaded their gear up in the car, contact Cheshire Angling.
