14th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Craig Richie made his first trip to our Hay-on-Wye fishery last week and in an afternoon session had over sixty dace all around 6 to 8ozs, some quality grayling, trout, and chub with the best at 5lbs. He fished a centre pin loose-feeding maggots for a cracking afternoons sport. He returned early the following day with the morning mist swirling eerily on the water to target the River Wye barbel. Craig only fished for two hours until the sun came up but was rewarded with six barbel, best at 10.5lbs, plus a chub. He took a fish on his first cast on ledgered double hair-rigged halibut pellet.
At last a report on the Weaver; before fishing Karl Nicholls cleared four pegs on the unused and overgrown River Weaver and in an afternoon session had over 10lbs of mainly skimmer bream, perch, and a few roach. He returned the following evening after work and in a three hour session had loads of roach and skimmers, in fact a fish every put in. He hit into a really big fish that went off like an express train stretching his pole elastic to the full before parting company. Karl reckons on paying more visits to this venue so watch this space for more Weaver action. He also tried his luck at The Mount at Buckley and fishing the pole in deep water had over 80lbs of fish which included bream to 4lbs, carp 10lbs, a specimen perch of 3lbs, along with some clonking roach and crucians. He fed maggot, caster, and hemp, along with four bags of groundbait.
Thomas Bates, one of our younger members and part of the future for our sport reports catching a grass carp from Grey Mist weighing 17-6-0 taken on his home-made boilies. I don't know where the fish came from, certainly illegally stocked at some time, so to comply with the law WAA will now have to apply for an ILFA licence similar to that held for the grass carp in Moore Quarry.
Whilst on the subject of illegal stocking the old lock balancing pool at Spike Island saw an algal bloom wipe out countless fish last week which included carp, bream, roach, rudd, tench, and eels, the majority illegally introduced from the adjacent Sankey St Helens Canal, by so called anglers. I hope that they are immensely proud of themselves and receive their just rewards.
On behalf of our members good luck to our Senior Match Squad on Saturday when they represent Warrington Anglers Association in the Angling Trust Division One National Championships on the Bristol Avon.
Many thanks to those members who take the trouble to send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
