21st August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Old rivals Derek Bibby and Jimmy Byrne took first and second places in this week's Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Moore. Derek had over a pound to spare with 5-10-14 against Jimmy's 4-4-14. Vice President Geoff Brooks was in the frame again in third place. It is not too often that tench are caught from the Bridgewater Canal despite the fact that we have stocked thousands in the past, however veteran Stan Charnock landed one of 2lbs but didn't quite have enough to go with it to get himself in the coin.

Still on matches our weekly Minnows (beginners) held every Monday at Euclid Avenue is more than a match it is also an important angling education instructional event attended by our coaches and volunteers. Currently all our coaches are fully CRB checked and every child who participates receives a prize. This past week due to light conditions they fished for only one and a half hours and produced a winning weight for Jake Braid of 3-14-0 followed in second place by David Smith with 1-11-12. It begs the question of just what weights they would have had in a four or five hour event.

Statham Pool is producing quite a few skimmers and roach and member Jim Bailey reports catching six carp to 10-4-0 on Chum Mixers. This water needs some TLC so are there any volunteers out there who could rum such a project. Please give me a ring or drop me an email.

We are also currently looking for a member who holds a PA6AW licence that permits him/her to spray herbicides in and around water. We need this to apply for EA permits on two of our fisheries to control excessive weed growth. Anyone interested please get in touch.

Good luck to members Helen Dagnall, Wendy Locker, and Dave Brooks (Ladies Team England Manager) who are part of the England Squad to represent their country in the 19th Ladies World Championship Coarse Angling Championship in Friesland, Netherland this weekend. There are thirteen teams taking part.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

14th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Craig Richie made his first trip to our Hay-on-Wye fishery last week and in an afternoon session had over sixty dace all around 6 to 8ozs, some quality grayling, trout, and chub with the best at 5lbs. He fished a centre pin loose-feeding maggots for a cracking afternoons sport. He returned early the following day with the morning mist swirling eerily on the water to target the River Wye barbel. Craig only fished for two hours until the sun came up but was rewarded with six barbel, best at 10.5lbs, plus a chub. He took a fish on his first cast on ledgered double hair-rigged halibut pellet.

At last a report on the Weaver; before fishing Karl Nicholls cleared four pegs on the unused and overgrown River Weaver and in an afternoon session had over 10lbs of mainly skimmer bream, perch, and a few roach. He returned the following evening after work and in a three hour session had loads of roach and skimmers, in fact a fish every put in. He hit into a really big fish that went off like an express train stretching his pole elastic to the full before parting company. Karl reckons on paying more visits to this venue so watch this space for more Weaver action. He also tried his luck at The Mount at Buckley and fishing the pole in deep water had over 80lbs of fish which included bream to 4lbs, carp 10lbs, a specimen perch of 3lbs, along with some clonking roach and crucians. He fed maggot, caster, and hemp, along with four bags of groundbait.

Thomas Bates, one of our younger members and part of the future for our sport reports catching a grass carp from Grey Mist weighing 17-6-0 taken on his home-made boilies. I don't know where the fish came from, certainly illegally stocked at some time, so to comply with the law WAA will now have to apply for an ILFA licence similar to that held for the grass carp in Moore Quarry.

Whilst on the subject of illegal stocking the old lock balancing pool at Spike Island saw an algal bloom wipe out countless fish last week which included carp, bream, roach, rudd, tench, and eels, the majority illegally introduced from the adjacent Sankey St Helens Canal, by so called anglers. I hope that they are immensely proud of themselves and receive their just rewards.

On behalf of our members good luck to our Senior Match Squad on Saturday when they represent Warrington Anglers Association in the Angling Trust Division One National Championships on the Bristol Avon.

Many thanks to those members who take the trouble to send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 7th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th August 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Woodshaw Reservoir is producing some phenomenal sport with crucians, tench, bream, and plenty of roach and rudd. The youngsters in the Woodshaw Series matches have produced some amazing weights throughout. This week the match was shortened to 90minutes and it still produced three weights over 5lbs! The series ended on Monday evening with a barbeque for the youngsters, parents, and helpers and saw Liam Gaskell win overall with 13 points. He was closely followed by Kieran Garside on 14 points. Every angler went away with a bag of goodies and a prize. Well deserved thanks to our local bailiff team, coaches, and all who made this popular event possible. If you have never as yet visited this gem of a fishery you are definitely missing out big time.

Neil Plunkett paid a successful visit to Grey Mist Mere this past week and in a short afternoon session started the ball rolling with one of the new mirrors at 10lbs. Neil confounded my recent Guardian report that the tench sport was slowing down as he promptly followed this with seven of the olive green tincas all between 4 and 6lbs. A few irresponsible anglers have been leaving our security barrier open on this fishery. Is it really worth losing your membership for the minute it takes to turn a key?

The River Mersey is producing more small fish this season and now the majority of  weights are taken on pole tactics whereas last year match records tumbled when members were tip fishing for large bream and skimmers. Whilst a few have been caught approaching 8lbs they are not present in any numbers, similarly the skimmers have done the same vanishing trick. The Mersey match was won this week by Bob Clough who after being outsmarted on his previous match by a 5lbs bream that escaped from the weigh basket he managed on this occasion to get all his fish to the scales for 5-4-4 taken alternating between pole and feeder.

Despite the fact that we heavily stocked The Mount Fishery at Buckley with carp it is the other species that are grabbing member's attention. This week Geoff Tyrell had a cracking rudd of 2.5lbs on float-fished sweetcorn, Andy Hughes 15 tench to 5lbs plus a 2.5lbs perch that took a liking to his corn steeped in his homemade liquid caster sugar bait dip. This 'pastie' water also produced a 19lbs PB common for Mark Doyle and a common of 16lbs upped Royce Keenan's PB.

On Monday we held the annual Halton Council/Warrington Anglers coaching day on our Phoenix Park fishery. Norton Priory organised some really interesting pond dipping, and we even had a team carrying out individual checks. In all we coached eighty youngsters plus a few parents who all caught fish. Each received a National Fishing Month Certificate of Merit. Thanks to all who helped to make the day a resounding success.
