26th June 2012 WAA weekly press release

Phil Hancock started his weekend with a superb brace of tench from Grey Mist Mere weighing in at 7-14-0 and 7-12-0, almost like peas in a pod. Both fell to ledgered maggot. He followed this with a trip to Cicily Mill Pool where he fished a small waggler and corn for a good catch of crucians averaging 2lbs along roach and skimmers.
Bob Cole braved the high water conditions last week on the River Dee and managed to find a fishable back eddy where he was rewarded as he said "with the best three hours ever". Trotting maggot he had chub, dace, and roach, with his best chub weighing in at 5lbs.
High Legh Pools produced a mixed catch of mirror carp to 3lbs plus roach, and small tench for member Joe Barnes who fished double maggot on a small waggler. I had a walk around the fishery on Monday evening and was amazed at just how much the bushes had grown. It is definitely due for a good pruning along with the removal of bulrushes after the nesting season. We will be fitting a lock on the gate soon for the benefit of members' security and to keep out poachers.
Rixton Claypits are still producing decent catches of tench which are in fine fettle and giving members a run for their money along with either a decent stretch to their elastic or bend in their rod depending on their chosen method. No carp reports to date. A small amount of litter has been left, beware you will lose your membership, no second chances.
The popular Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series has been producing some outstanding results with Ady Maguire showing his mastery of the fishery with wins on consecutive weeks, his latest on Monday was 13-7-0 followed by George Winstanley on 11-14-0.
Similarly the Howleston Cup junior match fished last Saturday on Ackers Pits saw our youngsters show the potential of this small fishery. Adam Harman with was an easy winner with nine carp for 37-10-0 whilst second placed Callum Brown had an all silver fish net for 7-6-0. A special mention and a well done to Joe Walters who framed in his first ever match with 5-12-0. Strangely only a few crucians showed up in the match despite the fact that there were plenty caught during practice sessions earlier in the week.
The very best of luck to our two Junior and Intermediate teams who are competing in the Angling Trust National Championships at Lindholme Lake Fisheries, Doncaster on Saturday.

19th June 2012 WAA weekly press release

The river season got off to a variable start on Saturday and certainly nature could have been kinder on the day. So many anglers look forward to the 16th with eager anticipation after the long enforced three month close season. Members still braved the rivers despite flood conditions and high levels with varying success one member reports just one bream of 3lb on his favourite Mersey peg while another had a new personal best bream of over 8lb.

The first Sunday series match also suffered from the pacey conditions Helen Dagnall  managed a nice winning net of roach and skimmers while third place Martin Griffiths had an all eel catch which match organiser Bob Campbell described as looking like a Medusa's head in his net.

The Bridgewater is fishing well, Brian Carmen had a good catch of roach and skimmers at Grappenhall but his day was made by a 5lb 6 bream, all caught on red maggot.

The Mount is also fishing really well as member Neil Plunkett will verify after an aborted opening day trip to Almere Ferry where the river turned out to be a swirling chocolate coloured torrent. He dropped back to the Mount the nearest alternative venue, the result he had four carp an old original common with black back and golden belly just over 12lbs, a mirror just over 10, and two others about 5lb and a tench about 3-4 lbs so all in all the Mount rescued his day. Well worth a visit.
Father and son duo Nick and Sam Roberts are enjoying some great father and son time at Cecily Mill pool, Sam learning to catch small roach and return them gently got a real shock when a pike moved in and began striking at each fish he returned.
The scene was set next day they returned  a sprat tempted a nice 8.5lb pike, a very impressed Sam was not content now he wanted to catch one too. Dad promised him a go at the end of their session and a few more roach were caught. Moving a couple of pegs further along the left hand bank Nick cast in three or four times and then let Sam do the retrieve. Just four turns of the handle and the water erupted about ten yards out,  a pike took the plug and leapt out of the water, after about five minutes and some help from Dad Sam landed his prize, I have a photo here of one very very happy six year old with his 10lb pike!
The Wigan waters Woodshaw, Mowpin and D&C pools are all fishing very well members should note when there are cattle in the Windmill field they must park carefully on the lane and not attempt to park in the field under any circumstances.

12th June 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th June 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Due to internet problems I missed the deadline for my last week's column/blog for the first time in a good number of years, anyway this week its business as usual.

The Mount is proving to be 'something to all men' and currently producing exceptional silver fish catches. John Wilsons last few sessions saw him catching roach to 1.5lbs on the pellet waggler whilst Andy Paddock has been getting amongst the rudd using similar tactics with fish around the pound mark. Best carp reported this week was one of the original old warriors, a common of 20- 8-0 by Darren Bunce. Neil Plunkett fresh back from his hols headed straight for the Mount for some intensive angling therapy and caught his best mirror carp so far this year at 14lbs along with tench to 5lbs and several roach around a pound.

Mark Howard has been tench hunting again at Grey Mist Mere on Wednesday when he had five of the olive green beauties with the biggest going to just over 7lbs making it the second fish of this size in the past couple of weeks. There is not too much carp action at the moment but I had a report that an eel of 5lbs being caught early this week.

Mark Carter made the trip to High Legh Fisheries and hit it just right and enjoyed a red letter day with over 100lbs of carp, roach, and a few tench. On the downside he ended up shifting other so called angler's rubbish. Take it from me it is absolute zero tolerance of litter louts we just do not want you as members and neither does any other angling club.

Mike Simpson tried his luck on the small lake at Sandiway and ended up with his best tench of the year at just over 7lbs and lost a large carp at the net. The rumour mill is rife with tales of quite a number of really decent carp from the big lake but as usual by the time or if ever I get sight of any photos it will be yesterday's news.

On the match scene it is a case of mixed fortunes but the first match of our popular Woodshaw Reservoir Series gave the best result by far. These keen youngsters got their heads down and winner Mike Rudd put an impressive mixed net of 13-6-0 on the scales for a comfortable win over second placed James Brown on 8-12-0. The series is run on a points basis by our local bailiff team.

Well done to Warrington Anglers Ladies team who won the bronze medal in the Angling Trust National Ladies Championship last weekend. Local tackle shop owner Helen Dagnall won individual silver and her team Starlets won gold.
