23rd February 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Good news is that dependant on weather conditions next week we should see the delivery of a new batch of fish for both Grey Mist Mere and Sandiway Lakes. VS Fisheries is the supplier of these 35 home grown mirror carp ranging in size from 9lbs to over 14lbs.

There will be working parties this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) on both Grey Mist Mere and Rixton Claypits so if you want to put something back into your sport just turn up on the day. Pathways and pegs are the main thrust on both fisheries where the excellent efforts by volunteers to date are self evident.

Saturdays local winter league results saw Mike Savage fishing for Saracens Head need only 1-14-13 to top the individual results with Craig Richie runner-up with 5ozs. 2drams. On a day when there were lots of dry nets Cheshire Angling Gold team all caught fish making them the winning team on the day with 26 points followed by Saracens Head on 18. The overall league tables with only two matches remaining are now headed by Cheshire Angling Gold on 154 points giving them a 19 point lead over Warrington Gold.

The Disabled and over 60's event on Monday was moved at the last minute to the 'Dead Length' which was the only place which was ice free. Trevor Bainbridge who reportedly was fishing with bread punch for the first time proved that he was a quick learner as he took the top spot with a nice net of small roach for 3-2-0. Bill Stockton on 1-10-2 was second with a skimmer and roach net.

The Trent & Mersey event on Sunday on the Red Lion Stretch was won by Gary Mannion with 3-4-0 of bread punch caught small roach. The weights then plummeted and saw Craig Richie take the runner-up spot for the second time in the weekend with 12ozs.

The very successful Sainsbury's Active Kids Scheme in its 6th phenomenal year has now been opened up to Clubmark Clubs (up to now it has been restricted to schools, scout, and guide groups).

From now until the 8th June Sainsbury's shoppers can earn Active Kids vouchers for every £10 they spend in a main store  (or for every £5 spent in Sainsbury's Locals), at Sainsbury's petrol stations or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

As a Clubmark club new young anglers would really benefit if you donated these vouchers to Warrington Anglers Association to redeem on their behalf for tackle products.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk )

15th February 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The best match result this week by far was that of George Barber who had an easy win on our popular Disabled & Over 60's event with a net of plump roach for 6-10-0. He fished pole and bread punch to be kept busy for most of the match despite marauding pike occasionally scattering the tightly shoaled fish. Bud Leigh only needed just over 1lb to take second place. Ever optimistic match organizer John Dagnall has had a real grueller the past outings with an aggregate weight of just 3oz. But as he says, "It can only get better."

The Mersey fished atrociously on Sunday with Paul Harding taking the pools money with just one fish for 5ozs. Undeterred and with memories of better times the stalwart band of river regulars have asked that the weekly event continues, so if you are a member and fancy trying your luck turn up on Sunday (details below).

Following a bite-less session on iced over Forsters Pools Mike McCullen decided on Saturday to visit Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir. The change of venue brought him a result with a dozen roach to 6ozs taken on pole and alternating between red and white maggot. Strangely enough he did not get a bite until he reduced his depth to 2ft.

The Dee is producing some good catches of chub and dace from Farndon and there have been reports of pike to 23lbs. Ian Wellings had a good catch of small dace, chub, and three trout from the Alyn just downstream of Cooks Bridge. Using a small maggot feeder he moved swims a number times as sport slowed.

2nd February 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The January Catch of the Month competition was won by Chris Dyer with his new personal best pike a 16lb 2oz beauty from the river Mersey here at Warrington and winning him £100 worth of Bait Tech products and a Korda fish care kit.

It  proves that persistence pays because after a day of false starts and disasters involving spare clothes and waterlogged wellies he was rewarded with not just his winning entry but also a second double. Both pike were taken on whiting which Chris had saved from a previous sea fishing trip, despite some ribbing from his more experienced mates, decided the whiting were the way to go.

The river was running fast when the rod started knocking so thinking it was a bit of debris on the line he lifted it   up, gave a bit of line and felt the weight of a fish on the end, struck and after several close shaves with some snags in his peg got his first view of the lovely deep specimen. Shaking like a leaf he was able to net and weigh his new PB and first ever river pike.

There will be a rowing event on the Mersey at Warrington this Saturday 6th Feb it will not interfere with the fishing but  members should be aware there will some disturbance as it is a large organised competition.

The river Dee has been fishing very well recently according to Chester tackle shop owner Wendy Locker with plenty of roach to be caught and an exceptionally good run of sea trout with anglers reporting catching fifteen or more in a session.

Members fishing in the Daresbury area on the Bridgewater canal may see an unusual water discharge into the canal it is not expected to affect fishing and should not be anything other than clean uncontaminated water. It has been sanctioned via the MSC and EA however if there is any discolored water or other issues members come across please notify the EA and ourselves immediately.

We would like to get a clearer picture of what lies on the bottom of Grey Mist mere and have in the past had members and others offer their services to the club for just such an opportunity.

So if any suitably qualified and trained divers out there would be interested in carrying out this sort of investigation for the club please get in touch and maybe it can be to our mutually benefit.

The weather had not improved enough on Monday for the Disabled & Over 60's group to hold their weekly match on the Bridgewater canal. They were disappointed when match organiser John Dagnall unfortunately had to call it off due to there not being enough ice free pegs to accommodate them all.

Please keep sending in your catch reports as they help both fellow members and your management committee in their continuous fishery evaluation. Tel. 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, new members, etc. Also new memberships can be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets (see our website for your nearest).
