2nd April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sport on any of our fisheries at present is breaking no records and it was the same for Mike Pritchard who targeted Statham Pool over last weekend. He fished his usual waggler tactics alternating between maggot and caster for a grand total of fifteen roach despite the fact that he could see carp and bream cruising on the surface through his swim but they were clearly not in a feeding mood. Other members similarly struggled during the day on this prolific fishery.

Dave Freeman decided to try Hamptons Pool for the first time on Thursday which currently only has a few fishable swims and is long overdue for a major facelift. Not knowing what to expect he travelled light with a pole, landing net, a small folding seat, and maggots. It was an hour before his first roach which was followed by twenty or so others including a couple of rudd. I must admit It is some years since I last fished this small pool which then also held carp and a few tench.

Anglers are still catching a few fish on Worthington Reservoirs where currently Adlington is now closed until 16th June. Arley is the water of choice where last weekend I was chatting to one angler who reported two carp just over the 20lbs during his overnight session.

Anglers targeting carp or tench on weedy or snaggy waters should in the interests of fish welfare use a drop off lead set-up. When you compare the price of a few lost leads to the average price of a 20lbs plus carp at around £900 it is a no brainer as lead retention carries a greater risk of tethered fish. Fixed leads or 'death rigs' are against all the principles of fish conservation and most certainly our bailiffs will be to say the least taking a dim view and offenders may well end up before the committee.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane saw most anglers really struggling and you needed to draw a bridge hole for any chance of winning. Well, Ray Boden who runs our Mersey matches has had to look for other competition opportunities since the onset of the Coarse Fish Close Season on rivers and the Bridgewater fitted the bill. Ray on his first Stillwater match for some time even managed to draw bang on the money adjacent to George Gleaves Bridge where fishing pole with bread and pinkie he made it pay with a winning weight of roach for 3-9-5. Alan Brown took second place from the other side of the bridge with 2-9-10.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.
