28th August 2008 - Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A catch and a half was the outcome for eight year old Lewis Anderson on a night session last Monday on Grey Mist. Judging by the pictures Lewis probably weighed in nearly his own weight in quality carp! This keen young angler accompanied by his Dad Bernard had four carp three doubles and then to top things off a 21lb 6. They were all caught and landed by the eight year old himself with his Dad standing by just to net the fish and then to supervise the weighing and photography.

All were caught using Nash Scopex Squid Liver boilies and a size 8 Nash fang X hook tied to Nash 15lb Ultra silk hooklink. Lewis caught three other fish before he wound his rods in at midnight. The other fish were all mirrors between 11lb and 16lb all fish were caught from the 'double post' swim all were landed between 6pm and midnight. The pictures will be on the web site shortly.

Despite being down two feet on Saturday the Mersey fished well on Sundays match with good catches of roach, perch and skimmers thirteen anglers who weighed in had a combined weight of 83lb. Ray Boden was out in front with his net of 15lb 3oz of perch and quality roach all caught

at 10 meters on pole.

The Dane was in form over the weekend, carrying a bit of water and the fish were feeding Bailiff Ron Williams had a short `fishing' visit as opposed to his usual working visits, in two hours he had six chub best 4.5lb all on big lumps of luncheon meat.

A reel has been found at Statham pool recently so if the owner would like to get in touch we can reunite him with it.

Just a note of information particularly for our newer members' night fishing is only available on certain waters and members must be in possession of a current night permit. You must also book on to the water of your choice before fishing in order to take advantage of this facility.

Cecily mill pool, High Leigh fishery and Forster's pools are not venues where night fishing is allowed. Night permits are obtained from HQ or by post and the booking number is on the back.

Subscription reminders are being sent out at present to members who have not yet paid for 2008. Subs can still be paid at the shops advertised in the license, by post or on Friday nights at HQ.

Entries for the August Bait Tech catch of the month comp must be in by next Monday 1st September.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

21st August 2008 - Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Thanks to the efforts of a small but conscientious band of volunteers and bailiffs who spent days clearing up litter deposited by other so called anglers at Grey Mist Mere the fishery is now open. I have received supportive comments from lots of members who likewise are simply fed up with the mindless minority who are responsible. No excuses, in future if there is litter on your peg it is down to you irrespective if it was there when you arrived. The situation is needless to say being closely monitored.

Last month due to a computer glitch we missed a junior 'catch of the month' entry submitted by Liam Gaskell. The situation has now been rectified and Liam will receive £50 of Bait Tech bait, a Korda carp care kit, and a certificate for his 2-1-0 crucien carp from Woodshaw Reservoir. Keep those entries rolling in for the August competition.

Only half a dozen anglers were mad enough to turn out for Sundays Mersey match series which was abandoned due to the flood conditions. The hardy band decided to use their bait on a pleasure session at Appleton Reservoir with some astounding results. The majority of fish were caught on feeder tactics and consisted of mainly quality roach to 1lb and a few perch. Lee Clark stuck to the pole method and had well over double figures being ripped of a number of times. If you fish this water a platform would be an asset as the water levels are currently high.

Sandiway small lake has been popular whilst Grey Mist was closed and quite a few carp have been showing up. Clive Wilson fished the pole at 12 metres for a catch of thirteen bream averaging just over 5lbs and three tench, best 6-8-0. He fished a pre-baited swim with corn on the hook.

Good reports from the Trent & Mersey Canal where catches of up to eight hybrids ranging from 2 to 2.5lbs taken pole tactics and small pieces of meat. The sedges at Anderton are also producing good nets of quality roach and perch to caster.

14th August - Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The winner of the July Bait Tech Catch of the month competition is Paul Sheehy for his stunning leather carp from Rixton Clay pits which weighed in at 24lb-5oz the usual lively debate took place in the Monday committee meeting about the merits of the various entries and the leather took the prize by one vote so well done Paul.

The August prize is now up for grabs so get your entries in quickly and where are all the junior entries this month? You can't all be away on holidays and remember you have got to be in to win.

More good news for members, our very busy team at Wigan led by Trevor Grey and Barry Shepherd has found another pool in the Aspull area to add to our portfolio. It is called Johnson's Farm Pool and has not been in use as a fishery for quite some time. The sadly neglected pegs were unsafe and some very overgrown. They have now been removed by local volunteers and twelve new comfortable ones will be constructed shortly. It is another little gem which has good stocks of tench, roach, cruciens etc.

Forster's pools are fishing very well with lots of decent sized cruciens and tench showing to pellet or paste. Work is still ongoing there but all pools are fishable. Please park sensibly away from nearby resident's properties.

Trevor and Barry had a day off from their bailiffing and water improvement works and enjoyed some excellent sport at our Worthington Lakes complex. Fishing the middle lake on the pole at 11.5metres they had roach to around the 1lb mark and good bream to 7-8-0lb they are a bit perplexed as to why more members are not giving it a try when the fishing is so good?

The River Dane has suffered from low water conditions but the rain over the past weekend improved sport dramatically with reports of good numbers of grayling to 1-5-0 being caught. David Kan took a day off from Nandos Restaurant at Stockton Heath to net six grayling and a chub of 4-8-0. Don't forget just show your membership card at the restaurant for a 20% discount on meals.

The committee is disturbed by reports of members wading at Moore Quarry. This is not only a dangerous practice on this venue but also marginal plants which have taken years to establish are being damaged. There is now a limit on numbers of night fishing places available on the Quarry which the committee has set at a maximum of ten per night.

7th August - Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I am pleased to be able to announce that the newly refurbished Forsters pools at Wigan are now open to members. Our signs are on the pools and although the car park at Mowpin pool is not stoned members can park on the obviously designated area as it is hard and dry.

These pools are situated not far from Woodshaw and all accessed from Whelley Road. Turn left into Higher Lane if you approach from New Springs and turn right into New Road if you approach from the Standish direction. A map will be on the web site shortly and copies available from HQ for anyone without access to the internet.

A few local members and bailiffs have been fishing them during the last couple of weeks and assessing stocks. Mowpin has been doing well with plenty of fish coming out. The small Carp pool in the adjacent field is also performing well and has produced tench to 7lb both have good stocks of tench, small carp, cruciens, roach and perch.

The two pools known as D&C in the `Windmill' field are much deeper, stone sided and were constructed sometime early in the 19th century. They have all the usual stock you would expect as well as some very pretty common carp nothing huge but enough to add a bit of extra excitement if you hook into one. On a sunny day the bigger fish are plainly visible cruising on the surface. Red maggot is the best bait at the moment. Please make sure you take every scrap of litter home with you these pools are all in fields used for cattle.

On the subject of litter it has become necessary to close Grey Mist due to the unacceptable mess which has been left on some pegs. We keep being told that it is because the schools have broken up and it is the junior members who are to blame….. Sorry I don't buy that within our membership just like within society as a whole. It is left by a dirty irresponsible minority across all the age groups.

Sadly the majority who never leave anything behind will suffer too. The `Mist' will close for any fishing from midnight on Friday and will not open until it is in a clean and tidy state and like other waters we control a credit to the Association and not an embarrassment. To this end there will be a work party on Saturday from 10.00am members willing to lend a hand will be very welcome.

Another problem which has also cropped up recently is of members bringing non members onto our private waters this is against our rules.

Parents of junior members should be aware that juniors, despite what they may tell you are forbidden from night fishing unless accompanied by a parent or designated guardian who is also a WAA member who you their parent has consented to allow them to go with.

If you drop your children off to night fish without these arrangements in place our bailiffs have no alternative but to instruct them to call you up to collect them immediately. Should they refuse bailiffs can only resort to requesting police assistance as it is a child protection issue.

Re scheduled 2nd Association Contest will be held on River Mersey on Sunday see below for details.

The winner of the July Bait Tech Catch of the month competition will be announced next week. The August prize is now up for grabs.
