Phil Brown fished another session at Appleton Reservoir last Thursday and lost a carp on his first cast, and then nothing until mid-morning. He landed four carp in total all taken on 16mm krill boilies feeding using a small mesh bag of free baits cast about 30 yards out.

I don't get many reports from the Macclesfield Canal so thanks to Gary Chadwick who fished at Astbury for his dad's three-year anniversary to be rewarded with a lovely catch of big perch and roach all taken on worm down the track (middle). I definitely agree with his comments that this is an underrated canal.

Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt aka The Dynamic Duo made a return visit to High Legh Fisheries this past week with Dave being determined to catch whatever snapped him seven times on their last visit. Starting off with a float rod and maggot brought a roach thirty seconds later and then alternating between the float and method feeder resulted in a further nine perch. Ken on a method feeder using his own particle bait and sticky toffee syrup with chilli pawn. Between them they caught mirrors 7lbs plus, 12.5lb, 5-3-0, plus more roach. Other members fishing also had a carp apiece. Another enjoyable session.

The Disabled & Over 60's were out on their Monday match at Daresbury Labs this week which saw weights down but the winner George Barber aka The Breadman put together a net of roach and a few perch on bread with a few on pinkie for a weight of 2-15-11. George Barber was close behind with a similar catch for 2-7-12 to take second place. It was a small turn-out with only eleven making it to the draw.

Thanks to the small but dedicated band of volunteers that turned out at Moore Quarry this past weekend. The re-surfaced path, pegs, and clearance was a cracking job and a credit to those who gave their time to help improve the fishery for fellow members to enjoy. More working parties at this venue will be announced…. simply turn up and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.

Peel Ports had divers inspect the weir gates at Howley weir this past week and are now looking at a solution to fix the damage caused by the large tree that collided with the structure. Both Warrington Rowing Club and ourselves have made representations regarding the devastating effect on both our sports.

Just a reminder that members have not yet paid their 2022 subscription and intending to retain their membership should not leave it too late. Don't forget you can renew at any of our tackle shop outlets or online from our website homepage.

And another reminder that anyone wishing to join our Facebook Group must be a current paid-up member. On application they should agree to the terms/rules of the site, give their membership number and name as shown on their licence address label as no pseudonyms are allowed.

A new face targeting the tench at Grey Mist last Thursday was Artur Cieslak who after starting off on the float decided it was too windy and settled for a method feeder and sweetcorn. The end result was eight quality tench, no weights, but clearly cracking specimens and a very happy Artur judging by the pics he shared with fellow members. The previous day David Tomkinson (aka The Tench Whisperer) enjoyed yet another productive session landing fourteen fish, best 7-9-0.

Certainly, the Mist must feature as one of the most productive tench fisheries in the region. It also conjures up fond memories taking me back almost seventy years when I would cycle there on the black sit-up bike my dad had made me from old ones dumped and rescued by a home-made grappling iron from the Mersey opposite where we lived at Paddington Bank. The tench were not as big then but there were plenty of 'bars of soap' to help cement my lifelong interest in our sport. All our yesterdays….

Well, after a series of ten blanks Josh Bamber finally ended his streak of bad luck on Wednesday by catching a great looking twenty pound plus mirror from Appleton Reservoir. His 16mm krill boilies were the bait that brought the more than welcome result. Tight lines Josh, hope this is just the start of more catches to come.

Derek Watts enjoyed his day session at Budworth Mere last week, finishing up with five jack-pike caught using floating wobblers. He lost a couple of fish and on one occasion the jack-pike following his rig was itself being followed by a much bigger specimen which clearly had a different target in mind altogether! He also reports good shoals of rudd and roach topping and another angler catching a couple of carp on a feeder.

Last Thursday regular column contributors Dave Gardner and Ken Hewitt aka The Dynamic Duo set out, as described by the latter on 'maggot drowning' on a pleasant sunny day at High Legh Fisheries. The conditions looked ideal and Dave caught what turned out to be the biggest fish of the session, a 7lbs carp on his first cast using feeder and maggot. He also added another dozen roach and perch, using both float-fished and feeder-fished pellet and maggot. He lost seven fish, probably carp. Ken had a mixed bag of roach and perch alternating between 7metre whip with maggot, and a few on method feeder and pellet, a total of fourteen fish. As he stated, an enjoyable relaxing session.

Crabs and crayfish, well this past week anglers reported a Chinese Mitten Crab from the River Alyn and a Signal Crayfish from the River Derwent. These are both invasive species and if anglers are absolutely certain of their identity and can responsibly remove and humanely kill them that is preferable. But if you cannot bring yourself to do this they should be released immediately back where you caught it. It is a good idea to inform the Environment Agency as soon as possible on 0800 80 70 60.

The two working parties this weekend at Moore Quarry will centre around the path area and swim maintenance; any help would be greatly appreciated. Saturday 24^th September kicks off at 1pm and on Sunday at 9-30am.

I am still awaiting information from Peel Ports regarding sorting out the ongoing problem at Howley Weir.
