5th October 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th October 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

To quote Simon Oldfield following his visit on Saturday to our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery, "What a day's fishing that was!" He enjoyed five hours on the pole and put together a proper mixed bag, with plenty of skimmers, roach, a few crucians and decent sized bream from this small but popular fishery. He had the best results on caster fished just over depth, but also caught on worm, plus some quality roach towards the end of his session on hemp. As he commented, "Lovely place to spend a rainy Saturday."

Friday saw Neil Plunkett at Grey Mist on a wet and windy day where he managed a tench on a method feeder and a few roach on the waggler, losing a decent tench in the weed. As he was packing-up the method feeder rod tip shot round and the fight was on thinking it was a bonus larger tench until eventually as it neared the landing net, he realised it was a very large eel. As he was unhooking the eel it wriggled free slithering back to its home environment. Neil had caught large eels from the Mist in the past but this was the largest, it was thick bodied and over 3ft long and would have certainly made any Anguilla Club member very happy. The fish took a robin red pellet with the method feeder packed with dampened micros.

Last Wednesday Mike Dabek thought that he would make the most of what might be the last decent weather of the year with a visit to High Legh Pool. In a couple of hours session, he ended up with a final score of four mirrors and two lost fish, all caught on ledgered 8mm banded pellet. A just reward for all the hard work Mike has put in on this fishery as a volunteer.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished on the Mersey Walk area of the river and saw winner Jimmy Byrne who earlier in the week on Thursday had enjoyed catching some decent bream from the stretch confronted with very different conditions due to the heavy rains. He drew peg 70 and fished a small groundbait feeder and single maggot for a net of twenty or so roach and perch for a weight of 4-15-0. Second placed angler Pete Jones included a bonus skimmer of 1.5lbs in his catch for a weight of 4-3-0. Fifteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match fished this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery saw Richard Baker a clear winner from peg 15 with a winning weight of 12-11-0 of mainly skimmers to 2lbs plus a crucian taken on pole and maggot. Alan Birchall who drew the adjacent peg 16 was the runner-up with a net of skimmers and roach for 8-6-0 caught on pole and caster. Twenty anglers fished.

Night fishing update: In an effort to be fair to all members one booking per week per person will continue. Two nights if required on Sandiway lakes, Worthington lakes, Moore Quarry, Rixton clay Pits, Phoenix Park Lake, Budworth Mere, and The Mount. Single nights on all other 'night venues'
The Committee continue to monitor the situation and further changes may be made if conditions dictate.

Please note: Working party on Appleton Reservoir on Monday 11th October 2021 10am start. Anyone prepared to help will be more than welcome.

28th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th September 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett was rewarded with a cracking roach session at Appleton Reservoir last Thursday when he decided to give the fishery a try as the weather turns cooler. He fished the tip with a small groundbait feeder and hemp with corn on the hook to catch thirty roach with some over a pound. The carp anglers there were also into fish with the nearest one to him landing five. A good all-round fishery.

Now this is where envy starts to creep in as Neil was out again the following day with a change of venue to Rixton Claypits. Fishing a method feeder with corn and meat his first fish was a lovely roach over a pound followed by five others until the bream moved in resulting in eighteen of the bronze beauties coming to the net.

Our picturesque stretch of the Weaver Navigation is still producing some good sport from the pegs maintained along with the never-ending grass strimming by our anonymous dedicated volunteer. Andy Corr reports a good Friday morning session of roach, skimmers, and gudgeon. Members thinking of fishing the venue on Saturday 2nd October would be advised to give it a miss between the times 8am to 4pm when Runcorn Rowing Club will be holding an event which could involve as many as forty boats (or more) on the water competing in what are in effect time trials.

Ian Roberts reports having a good dace catch from the River Dee at Worthenbury and he stopped counting at thirty! All fell to stick-float and bronze maggot. There was a similar report from further downstream on our Shocklach stretch by Tony Baron who had grayling, small chub and a few dace whereas his mate in a deeper swim had a better day with plenty of nice sized dace. Our rivers will no doubt benefit by the recent rain.

Our Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished on the Victoria Park stretch of the river and saw a reversal of last week's Boden/Billing result with Harry Billing reclaiming first place pushing Ray into the runner-up spot. Harry fished his usual pole with maggot and pinkie for a mixed net of roach and perch for a weight of 9-15-0. Ray wasn't that far behind when he put a similar catch on the scales which registered 9-9-0. Nineteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hill Top Road. It had been some time since a match was held on these pegs but Jeff Stoll certainly had no trouble finding the fish with a winning weight of roach plus a few rudd for 7-13-0. He fished pole and bread-punch changing to caster which brought some better stamp roach to 8oz. Second placed Ron Durr with 4-8-0 included a bonus bream of around 2.5lbs to his net of roach. Due to the early morning horrendous weather only eleven anglers fished so a change of scenery to Woodshaw Reservoir next week should boost attendance with reports of plenty of crucians, roach, and perch being caught.
