25th August 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Anthony Rough fished our stretch of the River Wye on Sunday and Monday of this week. The first day he fished the upper field where sport was fairly slow with one barbel around 5lb, a couple of good chub and some chublets. On Monday he moved to the downstream pegs which fished better, producing two barbel to 5lb, eight chub between 2 and 3 lb, and plenty of small chub. All fish were caught on groundbait feeder, with meat or boilie hook bait. Anthony's trip to the Wye has now become an annual event, with him commenting, "It's a beautiful stretch of river, and a privilege to fish."

Michael White who is one of our bailiffs on the Bridgewater Canal shared on our Facebook page some of his stunning perch catches over his past two Sunday sessions on the venue. Inspired by this Ian Simcock was on the canal the very next day where initially not a lot was happening but a change to a classic shad lure brought a change of fortunes, although his first fish was a jack-pike. He ended his three-hour session with a brace of perch, the best he reckoned was well over 1.5lbs. There are plenty of small roach in the canal to help their growth.

Danny Carman emailed me on the 8th May that he had seen two carp on the Bridgewater Canal between Stockton Heath and Grappenhall which he reckoned were both clear of 20lbs. This is the first he had seen carp on this stretch since a fair number died some fifteen years ago. On Friday evening it finally happened which he reckoned was a capture of a lifetime for him personally, although he has caught many carp much bigger this one is really special. Having grew up fishing the Bridgewater from the age of six he will not be forgetting his first canal carp catch of a 14lb 8oz caught using maggot and caster on an 18's hook to 2.8lbs hook-length.

The Mersey Match Series was fished this week at Victoria Park where Alan Faulkner got amongst the bream with two in the 5 to 6lbs bracket which along with skimmers and a few small roach saw him the clear winner with a weight of 16-8-0. He fished the pole for a short spell but a change to feeder tactics did the trick. Neil Buist fished the feeder to also include a bonus bream in his catch to take second place with 11-8-0. Nineteen fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday held on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook was a close-run thing with George Hollis the winner with 4-11-12 of roach taken on pole and pinkie. George Barber was only a quarter of an ounce behind with a similar net of fish for 4-11-8 and second place.

Louis Robinson at the tender age of eleven years is already a mad keen angler and Saturday saw him catch a cracking PB carp weighing in at 19-4-0 from our popular Appleton Reservoir venue. A pupil of Bridgewater High School he is currently out fishing five days a week and his interest in the sport no doubt stems from his father Ashley who has fished for Warrington Anglers at national level.

Vince Edwards enjoyed a good catch of bream from Budworth Mere on Thursday where he fished a groundbait feeder and worm and caster for a net of thirteen bream (lucky for some) and a solitary roach which he reckoned was the specimen of the day as it weighed 2-4-0. The bream were all around the 3lbs pls mark like peas in a pod. Best 3-12-0. This water is definitely worth a visit if you fancy a feeder session.

It is some time since we had a catch report from our Association owned stretch of the River Derwent at Darley Abbey. But Dave Smith made the ninety-minute journey from Knutsford on Saturday for his first visit to this prolific river. He set-up a light tip rod and groundbait feeder with the addition of a sprinkling of micro-pellet and red maggots. After an hour without a bite he moved pegs and casting across to a willow struck into his first bite of the day which was a chub around 2lbs. Four more chub followed, then he thought he was snagged until the fish started to move, resulting in a bream of 4.5lbs. He finished off with a few roach and will be making another visit in the near future. Don't forget with a reciprocal agreement with the local club we can fish the end lake for a change of venue or the river is in flood.

Ian Smythe enjoyed an epic roach session on the Macclesfield Canal at Astbury where he fished pole and maggot for a few roach before changing to hemp when after twenty minutes if he had hit them all it would have been a fish every cast. He still ended up with a nice net of roach to 12oz which he reckoned was at least 25lbs.

Sunday saw the 2nd Association contest (rod only) fished on the river at Mersey Walk where a very much in form Jimmy Byrne repeated his success of the previous week with a mixed net of skimmers, roach, and perch taken on maggot feeder and bolognese for 10-2-0. Jeff Shaw took second place from the adjacent peg with 9-9-0 and a similar mix of fish. In fact, I think Alan Faulkner landed the only decent bream of the match. Twenty fished.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge which saw local angler Rod Fraser capitalise on an end peg draw where he fished caster at 11 metres next to the marina wides for an impressive net of 9-9-0 made up of skimmers, hybrids to 1lb, plus roach and perch. Bas Chambers was second with exactly a hundred fish taken on maggot and pinkie for 6-13-8 of roach, perch, and gudgeon. Sixteen fished and totalled 75lbs of fish which averaged over 4.5lbs per angler.
