Tim Poulter enjoyed his first pike outing of the season on Friday morning at Rixton Claypits when within five minutes of his bait hitting the water, he was landing his first fish. This was followed by several others all caught on float-fished smelt. To quote him, "Nothing really big a great morning out."
Still on the predator trail but this time a day later on the Bridgewater Canal at Dunham where Ian Graham was drop-shotting for perch in the afternoon and was unprepared for a sudden vicious take, obviously not a perch. After a hectic battle a fighting fit pike lay in his landing net, unfortunately he had left his scales in his car boot but Ian reckoned it was well over 10lbs. He ended his session with two small perch caught on the same lure.

Our Sunday Mersey match series held this week at Mersey Walk was won by no other that Ant Higham aka 'The king of the River' on a very out of sorts flooded river when bites were very much a rarity. Ant fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to catch three bootlace eels, a skimmer, and a roach for 1-0-0. Second placed angler and Mersey regular Norman Gannon always comes good when the going gets hard and fished the same method for a skimmer and a roach for 0-11-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook on Monday and surprisingly the results were very much in line with the previous days Mersey match. The canal was chocolate coloured and it was a miracle that fish even found anglers bait, one good thing though was that the marauding cormorants couldn't find the fish! Ray Boden fished pole and pinkie from an end peg for two chunky roach which sent the scale round to exactly a pound. Bas Chambers took second place with 0-10-0.

Just an update on the boat vandalism I reported in last week's column that occurred on Friday 11^th October at Hough's Bridge. The angler concerned rang me and it certainly wasn't him who was responsible as he left shortly after the arrival of the boats confirmed by another angler.

It is getting to that time of the year again on our canal fisheries as temperatures fall and inevitably with less boat traffic the clarity of the water improves, yes, its predator time again. Paul Knowles baited with sardine on Tuesday to land a new PB of 13-7-0 from the Bridgewater and Jess Steele also caught a double on the same day.

Grey Mist is still producing a few carp, on Friday Trevor Royle landed an eighteen pounder and on Tuesday of this week Phil Brown caught a 22-2-0 mirror. Both were daytime catches. Definitely worth a visit.

Alistair Hemphill a Countryside Ranger with Flintshire Council is trying to organise some angling teach-ins on one of their pools near to The Mount on the 26^th July and 6^th September with two 15peg sessions each day, 1100-1300 and 1300-1500. He is looking for angler volunteers to provide guidance. Anyone interest please drop me an email.

This isn't a fishery report as such but it has the potential to be harmful and cast a shadow on our sport. On Friday evening October 11th October seven boats from a cruising club moored up at Houghs Bridge, Walton, to attend a 40 years inaugural celebration at Warrington Sports Club. At the outset a fisherman on the canal bank grumbled about being disturbed by boats arriving. The next morning the first boat that had moored discovered that his cover had been slashed several times and most panels on the towpath side had been scored such that the panels will need re-painting. No other boats were touched. It is imperative for all concerned that the person responsible is caught. Any information to me in confidence please.

Our Sunday Mersey match series held this week at Victoria Park was won by Jimmy Gannon who as many will know does a lot to ensure pegs are up to standard and tidy on the water. He fished a ground bait feeder and maggot to catch of skimmers and roach for a weight of 6-7-0 just beating Mike Dench into second place by a couple of ounces. Mike caught skimmers on the feeder but changed to bolognaise and loose-fed maggot to add a few roach for a total of 6-5-0. It was nice to see 'The king of the River' making an appearance.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge and saw Derek Bibby take the winners envelope. Derek fished the pole on maggot and caster for 6-2-2 of roach and perch. George Hollis was the runner-up with 4-4-0.

Regarding the 'no legering rule' on Ackers Pit for clarity this does include the use of leads such as olivettes, and any type of bulk lead fixed or otherwise used for legering.
