25th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Bill Last and Bruce Ruscoe fished Grey Mist on Saturday no doubt encouraged by a recent session where Bill caught ten tench the best weighing in at 9-10-0. Bill reckons that he put Bruce 'on the flier' which saw him land specimens of 7-6-0, 4-0-0, 8-6-0, 7-10-0, 7-0-0, 9-3-0, 8-3-0, and 6-8-0. Bill was still more than happy with his catch of 8-0-0, 7-10-0, and 8-1-0.

Ian Johnson enjoyed his red-letter day on the Mount at Buckley when fishing pole and maggot he soon had the roach feeding well and after a hectic hour and a half he decided that it was time to change to caster as he had been including them in his loose fed red maggots. Although it did slow his catch rate there was a much better stamp of the red finned beauties. Ian lost count of the numbers of fish but said that his catch did include some cracking fish that were easily around 1.5lbs.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway allotments saw Dave Brooks the winner with 16-1-0 made up of one bonus bream of 4lbs backed up by 12lbs of roach caught on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot and included two bonus bream of 5lbs apiece, a skimmer, and the rest roach for a weight of 14-5-0. The spread of marginal weed is a good for the river which gives essential cover for fish, but obviously it is also encroaching on some pegs so match organiser Ray Boden advises the members should include a weed rake in their kit.

The best weight since the opening of the new season came from our Sunday Mersey Series fished at Victoria Park. Kevin Hall made the most of his peg which produced four quality bream to 6lbs, a few smaller ones plus roach for 36-8-0. His catch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot saw him with over 20lbs to spare from second placed Neil Buist's 14-2-0 made up of six skimmers plus roach taken on pole and maggot.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished at Pickerings Bridge and produced lower weights than should be expected. Despite this there was some positive news in that the match length was absolutely alive with fry and small fish which hopefully bodes well for the future. The match was won by Rod Frazer with a couple of perch plus roach for 3-2-8.  Jimmy Byrne drew an end peg and his catch of small roach was 'ounced' by the winner when the scale needle stuck at 3-1-0 which put him in runner-up spot.

18th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th June 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

With many of our rivers on the Severn catchment flooded and unfishable for the 16th June opening of the coarse fish river close season at least locally the Dane at Holmes Chapel produced some sport for Martin James with three chub on legered crust. The Mersey match on Sunday at Latchford was won by Derek Bibby with a weight of 29-8-0 made up of bream to 5lbs, skimmers, and roach caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Jimmy Byrne took second place with 23-3-0 of bream on the same method.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match the following day on the river at Kingsway was won by Jimmy Byrne using groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight od 7-8-0 which included a bonus 3lbs bream plus roach and skimmers. Mike Worley was the runner-up with a catch of three bream and a roach on the same method for 6-10-0.

Its always great to hear new members catching quality fish soon after joining our club, this Sunday was a good day all round which saw Declan Evens catch his first twenty pounder a chunky mirror from Appleton reservoir and Karl Kenny had a PB with a mirror 22lbs on the same venue.

Lucas ProceK who voluntarily carries out a lot of work on Phoenix park Lake had a productive morning session on Sunday. He had already raked a few pegs clear of weed on Friday and set-up on one of them giving it a further raking before he introduced any bait which must have attracted a lot of tench as he had three in first 30 minutes, all around 3lbs mark, followed by cracking 10 pounder. Lucas cast his second rod to the far bank and landed 16lbs carp. His tench rod also produced a 22lbs mirror. Lucas loose-fed hemp and some sweetcorn and used a combination of 6 and 8mm expander pellets, boilies, meat, and maggots on the hook.  Biggest carp was on expander and maggot combo and the tench definitely liked expander on its own.

Our bailiff reports that the access track to our stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury is very rough with a number of deep potholes at the moment and you shouldn't attempt it unless you have a 4x4. It has probably not been helped by all the heavy rain and floods of late. Any member brave enough to venture down there please let me know how you fare.

A new Severn byelaw came into force on the 15th June 2019 that it is catch and release only for salmon on the River Severn and its tributaries.
