Darren Grant decided this year to target our river stretches and the first on the list was the Dee at Worthenbury. The bumpy journey along the rough track was soon forgotten when he reached the river as from the very first peg it looks so fishy. He returned home happy as he was rewarded with a chub well over 5lbs and a few grayling, however his car needed a polish after its adventure.

Appleton Reservoir is producing plenty of carp action but the only downside is that our volunteers whilst strimming the access points and banksides found empty bacon packets stuffed into the undergrowth. Those who leave their rubbish are not true anglers and we certainly do not want them in our club, anyone caught will lose their membership.

The levels on the River Mersey were well down last week almost to a trickle, however by Sunday they were suddenly back up and the river was fishable. Pegged at Kingsway Allotments our Saturday Series match saw Ray Boden and Arthur Plumb tie for joint first with 8-5-0. Arthur caught roach and perch to 8oz whilst Ray only had one roach but backed it up with perch to 4oz. Both fished pole and maggot.

The Sunday Series match held on the Mersey at Victoria Park was won by Barry Chambers who fished the pole alternating between maggot and caster for a weight of 9-15-0 made up of quality roach and perch to 8oz. Hot on his heels was match organiser Ray Boden who if he had put one more fish in his net the results would have been reversed. Ray fished the same method for 9-13-0 and included chub in his catch of roach and perch. If there had been a prize for 'fish of the day' then third placed Martin Kettle would have won easily after he landed a bream touching 6lbs after a tussle on light tackle. Many thanks to our small but hardy volunteers (you know who you are) for making the pegs fishable.

This week our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick Bridge on what was officially the hottest day of the year so far. Match veteran Jimmy Byrne took the honours with a net of small roach, perch, and gudgeon for 3-6-2 taken on pole and pinkie. George Barber had a few fish on both pinkie and bread punch for 2-13-6 and it could have been so different as he lost a big bream at the net, but that fishing.

Snippets: Quality bream to 8.5lbs being caught at Worthington Reservoirs. Small Sandiway is 'fishing its head off' also thanks to the working party volunteers for rebuilding pegs on both lakes.

Committee member Ade Green and myself had a trip to the River Severn at Loton Park on Tuesday mainly to assess the vehicle access situation. I must admit although some work has been carried out by the agents it only gives vehicle access to one field and there is 4 miles of fishing! We really need members who visit to give their views and catch reports. Please email me direct. From there we travelled to our Warrington Anglers owned stretch of the river at Bicton where access was very good and some kind person had even strimmed the carpark. After a walk to the river we checked another member who was fishing and set about beating down the vegetation to our chosen swims. I have to say that Ade had twenty dace and small chub on stick-float and maggot over hemp whilst I only managed four fish. The other member fishing was Colin Stott who first tried the feeder but soon changed to stick-float and ended his session with thirty chub and dace taken on maggot and caster.

Working party volunteer Rod Walker fished Offa's Dyke Fisheries last week and reports a good catch of roach, hybrids, perch, and rudd taken on maggot. This fishery is ideal for introducing a youngster to the sport of angling, and a reminder that an adult member can take a non-member youngster aged twelve years and under on a one to one basis to this fishery for free.

Mike Pritchard fished the River Mersey on opening day at Victoria Park where he fished a waggler and maggot although he tried caster but only had one bite.  Mike ended his four hour session with a tally of ten roach, a hybrid, perch, and eight small chub ranging in size from 6oz to a pound. The chub are definitely a very welcome sign that they are breeding successfully.

The first Mersey Match of this current river season was drawn at Mersey Walk on Sunday where winner John Green targeted the skimmer bream which made up the bulk of his weight of 8lbs taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Not far behind match organiser Ray Boden was the runner-up fishing his favourite pole and maggot tactics for a mixed net of skimmers, roach, and perch for 7-13-0.

This week our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge where George Hollis fishing bread punch and pinkie put together a net of small roach for a winning weight of 3-10-4. Lennie Dutton was in second place with a similar net for 3-8-4.
