29th July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

I enjoyed a trip out to Woodshaw Reservoir on Monday evening to have a chin-wag with the team and coaches who just happened to be running their annual youngsters BBQ prize giving match the sequel to the Woodshaw Junior Series won as reported last week by Lewis Turner. It was a cracking turnout of youngsters and supportive parents, everyone received a prize goody bag and the beef burgers etc. also went down very nicely. Many thanks to everyone who made this such a successful event.

Paul Wood enjoyed a six hour session on this same venue where fishing the pole at 10metres and alternating between pellet and corn he had roach to 8ozs and around fifty crucians to 2.5lbs. Ian Dempsey fished the water on Friday and got amongst the tench using pole and soft paste taking fish to over 3lbs. This venue is worth a visit and if you have not yet made the trip you are missing out.

Sandiway Lakes are notorious for their secrets being kept close to the chest by members who seem afraid that if catches are reported 'the place will be rammed'. Both lakes offer different challenges but generally are producing the goods depending on your quarry, be it carp, tench, or bream which seem to be the main target species. Chris Bates reports five tench, all females from Big Sandiway this past week, although targeting carp he was well pleased with fish between 8 and just over 10lbs. For the record he did lose a carp but that's fishing.

With low flow and possibly oxygen levels down the Mersey didn't fish too well on this week's Saturday match but Jeff Shaw showed his mastery of slider fishing with an all roach catch for 6-9-0 followed in second place by skimmer magnet Jim Gannon with 2-15-0 taken on the tip. The Sunday series more or less mirrored the previous day with newcomer Rod Frazer who cut his teeth on the Weaver taking the money with 4-7-13 taken on the waggler and alternating between maggot and caster. Ray Bowden fishing the pole wasn't too far behind in runner-up spot with 4-2-6.

Our Disabled & Over 670's match was fished at Preston Brook this week and saw Jeff Clare double the weight of his nearest rival with 7-14-1 boosted by a couple of decent bream plus small silvers. Alan Brown was in second place with 3-14-2 and there was only ounces separating a good number of weights. Match organiser John Dagnall was first out of the coin.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

22nd July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Although most rivers are suffering from lower flows anglers are still heading to these venues due to both their primeval urge and the excitement of fishing running water. Ian Ostern had a quick trip to the Wye and ended up with four barbel for his trouble including a PB at 13-0-4. All fell to the usual feeder tactics involving halibut pellets. Roger Dunning fished stick float alternating between maggot and caster at the bottom end of our Worthenbury stretch to have a cracking day in the deeper water with dace, chub, and after moving further down the swim where it shallows to a run he started picking up grayling with fish to 1.5lbs.

Keen young angler Lewis Hermes loves the Mount where on Friday our bailiff took some pics of a stunning linear mirror of 15-8-0 that he had caught. Lewis was back there on Monday for a short session ending up with a 7lbs mirror topped by a 22lbs common from this prolific and popular fishery. Our Bailiff Brian Jones report some nice roach catches on the feeder but the icing on the cake and fish of a lifetime was a specimen that sent the scales just nudging over 3lbs. All fell to 10mm boilies with a secret twist, but the trick is to try to avoid the carp, then the roach move in. If you are contemplating doing a night be prepared to miss out on sleep completely, that is unless you reel in! Sport is that good.

The Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series winner on Monday was Lewis Turner with a mixed net for 5-0-0. Runner-up was Dane Rawlinson with 4-5-0. Lewis's final match win cinched the series Individual Championship for him with 91.5 points and total weight of 63-1-0, leaving James Brown a worthy runner-up in this closely contested series with 86 points.

The Mersey really fished well this week and saw match organiser Ray Bowden win with a mixed net of roach, chub, dace, and a .75lbs perch for 7-11-0. Runner-up was Jim Gannon with 7-3-0 who for the record has made the frame at every Saturday series match. Pike were active throughout the match (they don't count), pity because Derek Bibby landed a 10 pounder.

The Mersey was also kind to our Briars Cup Open winner Neil Buist who fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot from peg 72 clocked up his second win of the season. He had a decent bream and a good back up of skimmers for 12-8-0 and well clear of runner-up was Jeff Shaw on 9-8-0.
