The Disabled & Over 60's match at Thelwall Station was a disappointing affair possibly due to the fact that all the wild life habitat and fish holding areas have been almost completely wiped out. Alan Brown who was second in last week's match upped his game to take the top spot. He put 3-5-0 of skimmers and roach on the scales taken on the pole using bread and caster. Less than an ounce separated the next three weights.

 

Gary Doherty and his two mates had a good days fishing at Rixton Claypits this week when on Tuesday they set their stall out using waggler tactics and loose-fed maggots. Sport was so good they saw no reason to change. A beautiful sunny day, swims near the car park, and an endless supply of skimmers and roach queuing to take their bait, that's fishing at its best. Add a 5lbs tench and a roach that they weighed at 1.5lbs for good measure and they were more than happy.

 

Neil Plunkett has made the most of a few days rest from slaving away on WAA working parties. His first venue was Ackers Pit where he had twenty four nice roach up to half a pound plus (he stopped counting at two dozen!) Waggler and maggot was the successful method coupled with regular loose-fed micro pellets.

 

He followed this with a pleasant days sport at our Mount Fishery at Buckley where after taking some advice from Brian Jones our resident bailiff he proceeded to christen his new rod and also to try out optonic bite alarms for the first time. His catch of fifteen carp from 2.5 to 6lbs ensured that he was more than happy with his session. Despite getting some grief when we recently heavily stocked this underused fishery the steady stream of new members from the area and members testimonials have confirmed it was the right course of action for the greater good.

 

If any member has any recent catch reports from the River Wyre prior to the end of this coarse fish close season I would appreciate it if you could drop me an email with full details. There has been several seals (now back at sea) that have caused untold damage to fish stocks and in partnership with St Michaels AC we are collating fishery catch details.

 

Several member have been caught on one of our fisheries with alcohol, it is clear enough in our rules that it is banned. I know it is a shame that decent anglers cannot enjoy a couple of beers, but some anglers sadly don't know the difference between a couple and a full case.

Coarse anglers who targeted our rivers in the few remaining days before the close season descended upon us on the 15^th March were well rewarded for their efforts. Alan Bourne had a personal best barbel from the river Wye that weighed 9-3-0. It was a long fish but stunning nevertheless and would have undoubtedly carried a lot more weight in the summer. Local angler Jin Swale also found the barbel, catching in his case a 'lucky' thirteen fish with the best at 8-12-0. All were taken on what now seems the standard tactics of feeder fished halibut pellet.

 

Glyn Roberts had his last river fling closer to home on the River Dee at Shocklach where he had cracking sport with grayling that were almost crawling up his rod tip in their eagerness to devour his single bronze maggot offerings. He fished my favourite stick float method and included three chub around 2lbs in his thirty eight fish catch but strangely not a single dace. Several of the grayling went up to around the 2lbs mark and were beautiful fish.

 

I have heard a juicy little tit-bit of information about the slender win that nearly wasn't in the Angling Times Supercup Knockout Competition of our Warrington Blue team against Cinderland AC last week. Our team captain Jeff Stoll has admitted to the nightmare happening dreaded by all match anglers, yes as he was drawing in his net for the weigh-in he lost his grip, presumably on the net, and generously tipped back ten of his hard caught twelve fish.

 

On our WAA winter league on the Macclesfield Canal Craig Richie fishing for Cheshire Gold 'ounced out' second placed Neil Buist who had 7-4-0 against his 7-3-0. They fished different tactics and baits; Craig choosing the bread punch approach catching roach and skimmers whereas Neil stuck with worm and caster for quality perch caught down the track and a decent sized bream.

 

The Disabled & Over 60's match saw Dave Blears have a runaway win with over 3lbs to spare over second placed Alan Brown on 5-13-3. Dave took his skimmer and roach net on caster and bread and put 8-13-12 on the scales. Ron Durr had a bonus 4lbs bream that put him in the money.

 

Some ugly news coming from Rixton Claypits this week is that a group of Eastern Europeans have been observed by members stealing fish and taking them away in a bag. To make matters worse they also left a disgusting array of litter and beer cans. There is no place for these people in our sport and they are an utter embarrassment to the many decent Eastern European members of our club. These thieves are fully aware of our Countries laws but choose to blatantly flout them. I have passed a report on the incident to the Environment Agency.
