27^th April 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Jeff Mowbray has caught the 'Cicily Common' once again after first banking this famous fish almost a month ago to the day. I have not yet spoken to him so do not know the exact weight, however reports are that he also had two other carp of 17 and 20lbs in the same session. Skimmers and tench are still providing the main sport at this popular venue but with the warmer weather more crucians are now showing up in catches.

Rixton Claypits are producing tench to 7lbs and bailiffs are reporting an unusual amount of bream to 4lbs being caught, many with spawning nodules showing and taking most bait. Phil Turner had a good evening session with a dozen bream and four tench, biggest 6lbs. Pole fished double caster was his successful method.

Roach, skimmers and bream to 4.5lbs featured in our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday with winner Trevor Bainbridge over doubling the nearest weight with 14-12-4. Alf Seddon was second with just over 6lbs. Quite a number of fish were lost at the net leaving match regular Stan Charnock bemoaning the loss of two big fish which would have put him firmly in the frame. Bread and double caster accounted for the larger fish.

Local rod Alan Webber fished Woodshaw Reservoir on Monday using his favourite pellet method to deadly effect. He was on a fish every cast and included crucians, tench, roach, and rudd in his catch. Quality roach have also been coming out to caster.

Our local bailiff reports that Mowpin on our Foster's Pools mini-complex is worth a visit with good catches small carp, crucians, roach, and rudd being taken on maggot.

Tench are still feeding well at Grey Mist Mere but although there is a lot of carp movement only a few fish have been reported. A worrying feature is that two anglers were spotted taking two pike from the fishery and also setting baited lines on bank sticks in the margins. I would ask members to report such activity immediately to both the Environment Agency 0800 807060 and myself on the number below. Don't put yourself at risk but if you can get car numbers it certainly helps.

Colin Wood revisited Rixton Claypits last Thursday afternoon after a spell away from this popular venue and was soon reminded how much he had been missing. He caught over forty roach averaging 4-6oz, a few skimmers and a bream around 2lb.  At one stage it was a bite-a-chuck as the fish homed in on his double maggot presented on a loaded waggler slightly over depth. Besides having a great session Colin also gave the thumbs up to the improvements our band of volunteers have carried out to the platforms, paths and car park.

Tench are still providing sport at Cicily Mill Pool with member Ian Baker reporting a good session on mini-boilies. He landed thirteen fish to 5lbs and lost a decent carp at the net. Roach and skimmers are also featuring in catches taken mainly on maggot.

Grey Mist Mere has been improving week on week in line with rising temperatures but it has been tench that have been more in evidence with fish to 6lbs. Best carp catch I know of was three fish.

According to local bailiff Brian Jones it seems that an illegal stocking has taken place at our Buckley fishery as quite a number of small carp between 2 and 6lbs are being caught. I cannot understand the selfish mentality of so called anglers who would put at risk the welfare of resident fish by such an irresponsible action. Tench and roach sport on the bottom pool is improving with several good catches on pole and maggot. If you fancy something different it's well worth a visit to this picturesque fishery.  

Vice President Geoff Brooks fished his first match after just returning from a lengthy holiday in New Zealand and more than doubled the weight of the next angler. His bream and silver fish catch of 4-7-2 gave him an easy win over runner-up Dennis Bate with a net of small roach and gudgeon for 2-2-10.

In a joint exercise with the Environment Agency Fishery team we removed lots of algal growth from Ackers Pit during the week and barley straw nets are now in place. The good news was that we caught lots of roach fry in the hand nets plus some perch which had already spawned. Marginal weed growth is starting to show despite the hoards of ducks which seem to eat anything green.

I still receive calls from members asking if our canals are open for angling. The first general rule in our membership card clearly states ALL still waters and canal with the exception of Adlington Reservoir are open throughout.  River fisheries are governed by the Environment Agency close season and byelaws.
